"That's the Dutton Way": Kayce Packs a Punch The teaser opens in the most dramatic way possible, finding Kayce held at gunpoint inside a remote cabin by a suit-wearing intruder. When the mysterious gunman remarks that he has "heard stories about the Duttons," Kayce delivers a line so beautifully cold it deserves its own belt buckle: "The fact that you’re doing this tells me you haven’t heard them all." After intercepting a shipment, they dumped the illegal cargo right back on Beulah's doorstep with a very clear message: leave us out of your dirty laundry. Naturally, cartel boss Mariano Reyes didn't take too kindly to his multi-million dollar product being tampered with. Believing the Duttons stole his merchandise, Mariano sent a heavily armed hit squad to wipe Beth and Rip off the map entirely. Blood, Bullets, and the Ultimate Ranch Defense What followed was an absolute war zone right on the Dutton property. With their backs against the wall, Rip recruited ranch hands Zachariah and Azul, alongside the weathered old veteran Everett, to form a makeshift militia. The good news? The home team won. The Dutton squad successfully repelled the invaders, sending most of the cartel hitmen to their final resting place. Azul took a bullet during the crossfire, but luckily, the wound wasn't fatal. The bad news? The peace didn't last for more than five minutes. The Execution of Rob-Will Jackson: Did Joaquin Do It? If you had Rob-Will Jackson on your finale death prediction bingo card, congratulations, you win. Driven by pure greed and a desperate need for power, Rob-Will made the ultimate mistake: he betrayed his own flesh and blood. He ran straight to Mariano, snitching that Beth and Rip knew every detail of the drug operation. Mariano, completely done with the incompetence of his business partners, decided it was time for a corporate restructuring. In “The Mint,” a tightly woven, 23-minute episode of The Bear, the storm outside the restaurant of the same name feels like more than just a moment of bad weather. It is at once a warning and a mounting of considerable pressure — a shifting of the atmosphere, if you will, and the echo of everything threatening to collapse inside. Episode 3 of the critically acclaimed FX series’ final season opens quietly, almost tenderly, with Chefs Sydney and Carmy, played by Emmy-winners Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen White, respectively, doing what they do best in the stillness of their work. However, beneath the calm, Carmy carries a decision that will change everything. White’s Carmy, quiet and resolved, tells Sydney he will be ready to share his decision to step away from the restaurant—and the industry—when she is ready. For Carmy, leaving may feel like the promise of needed peace. For Syd, it feels like being handed the keys to a sinking ship and told to steer with confidence. Milling around the two, an oblivious staff are left scrambling to clean up flooding and water damage. Outside, Mother Nature has not let up. Inside, neither do the problems. Everyone stays busy because stopping to take it all in would be akin to accepting defeat. As the episode unfolds, it becomes clear we are being asked to settle into the melancholy that will blanket this farewell season. The darkness of which feels less like a passing mood and more like a foregone conclusion for the remaining episodes. While Carmy keeps telling Syd she is in charge, and he genuinely seems sincere, the perfection-obsessed chef cannot seem to fully let go. He defers to his partner in principle, then steps in at the first sign of hesitation. Every small correction, every instinctive override, chips away at the confidence Syd is trying to build for herself. That tension becomes the heartbeat of the episode. It is obvious Carmy wants to respect Syd’s authority, but his reflexes keep moving faster than his intentions. As the two chefs move around each other, stepping over each other’s workspace and decisions in a kitchen that once comfortably held the duality of their brilliance, Sydney finally asks for more physical space — a practical request that lands with emotional weight. For the first time in the series, Syd and Carmy feel profoundly out of sync. Carmy is calm because he has finally made a decision that is best for him. Syd is anxious because she wants the opportunity to lead, but leadership now means acting more on impulse than before she feels ready. To fuel the fire, the chaos expands with each turn of the script. Across town, Carmy’s mother loses power while babysitting Natalie’s baby. Neil, played by Matty Matheson, becomes increasingly worried about demons, reading the biblical-level disorder overtaking the restaurant as something more ominous than inconvenient. Serving supplies go missing. And yet, Sydney calmly reminds everyone they have five hours until service, as if this is just another day in paradise. It is one of the episode’s sharpest contrasts – speaking control into a room where control has already started to slip. The plot thickens when the restaurant’s reservation system, knocked out by the storm in the season opener, comes back online only to reveal yet another problem -- more guests than planned. Syd and Natalie (Abby Elliott) immediately see the food supply shortage ahead. Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) sees the business they desperately need. Both sentiments are right, which only makes the night feel more impossible. Everyone looks to Carmy for answers; Carmy looks to Syd to lead. Syd hesitates, caught somewhere between strategy and panic, leaving Carmy to jump in to take control of rallying the troops. In the midst of the flooding, menu pressures, micromanaging, and the white noise building in her head, Syd blurts out what has been languishing between them and the staff: Carmy is leaving. Only, this time through cinematic choice, we the viewers do not actually get to hear her say the words. Cut to stunned faces. The room freezes. Carmy is forced to say the rest out loud. He no longer wants to be head chef. It does not make him happy. He does not know if it ever did. The silence that follows is heavy and punishing, as the team stares back at him wide-eyed, mouths agape, trying to absorb the meaning of what their fearless leader has just said. White plays the moment with the familiar contradiction that has made Carmy so compelling -- calm and chaos living behind the same piercing blue eyes. The pain of saying the words to his friends and family is etched across his pale face. Even as he repeats that he loves them and is sorry, the group remains almost paralyzed by disbelief. Needless to say, the news is not received well. Some, including Neil and Uncle Jimmy, played by Oliver Platt, are more vocal in their reaction. Others process it by doing the only thing they can do by staying focused on the work immediately in front of them. Richie tries desperately to reassure the room while Syd attempts to support him with practical reminders about the hours ticking down until doors open. But the episode understands that once a truth like this enters the room, no amount of prep work can fully push it back out. When Syd and Carmy are alone again, she apologizes for the outburst, admitting both her annoyance and frustration with the ensuing problems and his presence. Carmy’s response is loving but also telling. He reminds her to stay on top of things in the kitchen, with no hesitation when she is in charge. Though sound advice, it is also exactly the kind of pressure that makes her hesitate in the first place. Trying to balance it all, Syd retreats to the cooler to collect herself and stave off a panic attack. It is a small, human moment, and per usual Edebiri plays it with quiet precision. When Chef Syd emerges, she has found the beginnings of her own voice. She offers her own rallying cry for the beleaguered troops. Though, the moment is cut decidedly short when the bottom falls out on the sky once again. Are we still sure this is a comedy? After the emotional fallout of the last couple of episodes, Episode 7 shifts the focus from action to consequences. It's an episode built around lies, guilt, and people trying to keep a secret that's becoming harder to contain. While I enjoyed the main story, I have to admit the editing felt a little off this week. The episode jumps from storyline to storyline so often that it never really settles into itself. It was really disjointed but even with that, the central plot is still strong enough to keep me invested. Tiffany is clearly unraveling after killing Nuk. The opening scene, where she's haunted by memories of what happened, does a good job showing that she's carrying the weight of her decision. It's one thing to convince everyone else you're okay, but it's another thing to convince yourself. Victor continues to be the voice of reason... at least for a little while. When Tiffany suggests framing Bakari for Nuk's murder because everyone already sees him as a killer anyway, Victor asks the question we've all been thinking: "Are you trying to become the new Alicia?" That line says everything about where Tiffany's head is right now. She's making decisions out of fear instead of thinking about the damage she's causing. Meanwhile, Smitty is officially stepping into the leadership role left behind by Nuk, and I actually liked seeing him take charge. He's laying down the rules, putting everyone in their place, and trying to keep the streets from turning into complete chaos. It also looks like Big Mike has become his right-hand man, which should make for an interesting dynamic moving forward. One character who continues to shake things up this season is Reg. Early in the episode, Smitty confronts him about Nuk's disappearance, and Reg doesn't flinch for a second. He makes it clear that if he had killed Nuk, he'd own it, and he warns Smitty to stay off his blocks if he wants to avoid problems. That scene reminded me why Reg is still one of the most intimidating characters on this show. He doesn't need to raise his voice or threaten anyone. His confidence does all the talking. Reg isn't finished there either. Later in the episode, he shows up at Tiffany's house looking to do business, and you can immediately see the tension on Victor's face. Victor knows exactly what kind of problems Reg brings, but Tiffany is desperate enough to consider working with him, especially since the mob wants nothing to do with her anymore. Reg offers her a trial period, and honestly, I don't think that's going to end well for anybody. Tiffany is already trying to cover up one huge secret. The last thing she needs is to get deeper into business with Reg. Bakari continues to be one of the most tragic characters on this show. Tiffany and Victor pressure him into taking the blame for Nuk's murder, and his confession about killing Ronnie years ago is one of the episode's strongest moments. He admits that revenge didn't bring him peace, and Tiffany quietly realizes she isn't feeling any different after killing Nuk. It's a subtle scene, but it's one of the best conversations in the episode because it reminds us that violence doesn't erase pain. The wedding storyline between Emmett and Keisha continues to add some lighter moments, but even that is overshadowed by everything happening with Nuk. You can tell Emmett is becoming more uncomfortable with Tiffany being so involved in their lives, and honestly, I don't blame him. Even the wedding planner looks like she's wondering how this group functions after hearing everything they're trying to plan around. Then comes one of the biggest moments of the episode. Keisha confronts Bakari about Nuk's disappearance after being led in that direction by Tiffany and instead of dancing around the question, he tells her he killed him. Whether she fully believes him or not is another story, but watching Keisha break down was heartbreaking. Birgundi Baker continues to bring so much emotion to this role, and you can feel how deeply this affects her. That confession creates another huge moment when Emmett confronts Victor. Instead of sticking with the lie, Victor tells Emmett the truth. His reaction says it all. He's shocked, conflicted, and immediately wants to tell Keisha. Victor reminds him that revealing the truth would destroy multiple lives, especially now that Keisha is planning a future with Emmett. It's an impossible situation, and there really isn't a good answer. Elsewhere, Shaad keeps digging into Nora's murder despite everyone warning him to let it go. His scenes with Patience continue to show how grief can cloud someone's judgment, and I have a feeling this storyline is building toward something much bigger. After telling Victor that Reg was responsible for Nora's death, Shaad asks him to make peace with him like he promised. Victor immediately shuts that idea down, saying Reg brings nothing but problems wherever he goes. I actually agreed with Victor here. Reg may be charismatic, but every storyline he touches seems to leave destruction behind. The episode also throws in a few surprising reveals, including Shawnita and Angie being sisters, while Jake's "no phones" party provides a brief break from all the heavy drama. Even Papa and Kenya finally get a little screen time, although they're still mostly on the outside looking in. One thing I couldn't ignore, though, was how scattered the episode felt. Just when one storyline started building momentum, we'd jump somewhere else. It wasn't enough to ruin the episode, but it definitely affected the pacing. The scene that hit me the hardest wasn't about the murder mystery at all. It was Keisha putting Ronnie to bed when he innocently asked about his father. That conversation landed differently for me. After recently losing a parent myself and having difficult conversations with my own children, that scene felt incredibly real. Moments like that are why I continue to watch The Chi. Even with all the crime and drama, the show never loses sight of the human side of these characters. By the end of the episode, Detective Toussaint shows up looking for Nuk, and the look on Bakari's face says everything. The walls are closing in, the lies are piling up, and it feels like it's only a matter of time before everything comes crashing down. Overall, Episode 7 isn't as tightly paced as some of the previous episodes, but it continues to build the tension surrounding Nuk's disappearance while delivering several emotional character moments. Between Tiffany's guilt, Reg making moves behind the scenes, Bakari carrying a burden that isn't even his, and Detective Toussaint getting closer to the truth, the second half of Season 8 is shaping up to be one wild ride.

Grab your tissues, One Chicago fans, because Intelligence is losing another legendary piece of its soul. In a twist that exactly zero of us wanted to see on our 2026 bingo cards, LaRoyce Hawkins is officially leaving Chicago P.D. as a series regular. After 13 seasons of watching Officer Kevin Atwater carry the moral compass of the entire 21st District on his very broad shoulders, Hawkins is packing his bags during the upcoming 14th season. For a show that has already bled major talent over the last few years, looking at you, Jesse Lee Soffer and Tracy Spiridakos, this one cuts deep. Atwater wasn’t just a character; he was the reliable anchor in a sea of questionable police tactics. Thankfully, the showrunners aren’t completely pulling the rug out from under us on day one. Hawkins is scheduled to return for the first two or three episodes of Season 14 to properly wrap up Kevin Atwater's storyline. With the new season slated to premiere on October 7, 2026, you can expect his official curtain call to air sometime around mid-to-late October. While a short farewell arc is better than a sudden, off-screen disappearance, it means his final days in the uniform are already numbered. Enjoy those crisp, perfectly delivered Atwater standard operating procedures while you can. If there is any silver lining to this heartbreak, it is that the writers actually set up a functional, happy exit for the man. For years, Chicago P.D. fans complained that Atwater was constantly shortchanged in the romance department. The writers finally heard the cries in Season 13 when they reconnected him with his former academy colleague, Officer Tasha Fox, played by Karen Obilom. The Season 13 finale dropped a massive bombshell when Tasha revealed she is pregnant with Atwater’s baby. Given how fiercely protective Kevin is over his family, remember how hard he fought for his younger siblings, Jordan and Vinessa, it makes perfect narrative sense that he would choose to step away from the line of fire. Leaving the grim, stressful streets of Chicago to raise a family with Tasha gives Atwater the peaceful, well-deserved exit that almost nobody else in this universe ever gets. Frankly, after over a decade of taking literal and metaphorical bullets for Hank Voight, the man has earned a break. With Hawkins stepping down from his full-time status, the list of remaining original cast members from the 2014 pilot is looking incredibly thin. Once Season 14 gets into full swing, the only original series regulars left standing will be Hank Voight, Adam Ruzek, Kim Burgess, and Trudy Platt. Losing Atwater fundamentally shifts the dynamic of the bullpen. He was the perfect foil to Ruzek’s hot-headed impulses and Burgess’s emotional conflicts. Without him, the balance of power changes completely. The show must go on, and NBC wasted no time looking for a replacement. Casting is already underway for a new Black police officer to join the series regular lineup. The character breakdown hints at someone who is a total wild card, a stark contrast to Atwater’s strictly-by-the-book philosophy. Watching the tight-knit Intelligence unit adjust to an unpredictable newcomer while simultaneously grieving the loss of their most trusted brother is going to make for a very tense workplace environment. It is impossible to overstate how much LaRoyce Hawkins brought to this franchise. He turned what could have been a background character into the emotional core of the series, anchoring some of the show's most poignant episodes regarding race, justice, and community policing. While it is sad to see him go, 13 seasons is an incredible run in modern television. The TV Cave will be tracking this transition every step of the way.
