The DC Universe is expanding, and a live-action Mr. Terrific TV series is officially in active development at DC Studios. First reported by The Hollywood Reporter, this new solo project will stream on Max. The television series serves as a direct spin-off from James Gunn's Superman film, where the character originally made his big-screen debut.
It looks like James Gunn is actually serious about handing the keys of his shiny new universe to the ultimate nerd icon. Fans are already looking at this project as a massive win for comic book purists who have been waiting for Michael Holt to finally get his due.
Edi Gathegi Returns to Play the Super-Genius
Actor Edi Gathegi will return to star as Michael Holt, the multi-talented superhero known as Mr. Terrific. Following his breakout reception from audiences, Gathegi signed a multi-project deal ensuring his long-term presence across the franchise.
Gathegi brought the exact blend of arrogance, warmth, and heavy-intellect charm that the character desperately needed. The actor is also locked in to appear in upcoming theatrical projects, including the highly anticipated sequel Superman: Man of Tomorrow.
The Creative Mind Behind the Pilot
The studio has tapped a heavy hitter to shape the tone of the upcoming show. Allan Heinberg is writing the pilot script. Heinberg has a stellar track record in the superhero genre, having famously co-written the 2017 Wonder Woman feature film and served as showrunner for Netflix's critically acclaimed adaptation of The Sandman.
For those unfamiliar with the source material, Michael Holt is historically recognized as the third-smartest man in the DC Comics universe. He does not possess biological superpowers. Instead, he navigates danger using Olympic-level athletic skill, a genius-level intellect, and his signature T-Spheres, floating, multi-functional robotic orbs capable of hacking, sensory cloaking and offensive combat.
The character is also famous for his strict personal code, symbolized by the phrase "Fair Play" stamped onto his jacket. Critically, leaning into a tech-based, hyper-intelligent lead offers a refreshing break from standard punch-heavy superhero fare.
A successful solo run could pave the way for a live-action adaptation of The Terrifics. This is Holt's eccentric, dimension-hopping comic book team that essentially acts as DC’s answer to the Fantastic Four, potentially pulling in popular characters like Metamorpho and Plastic Man down the line.
The Verdict on This DCU Spin-off
While the project is currently in the early script-writing phase without a firm release date, its existence proves that the studio wants a deeply interconnected universe built on character-first television spin-offs. It is an ambitious swing, but given the talent attached, it is easily one of the most promising titles on the upcoming slate.
