There are TV comebacks, and then there are the kind that make longtime fans immediately start counting down the days until premiere night. CBS has officially confirmed that Michael Weatherly is returning to NCIS this fall, reprising his beloved role as Tony DiNozzo in a season-long arc that reunites him with the team that helped make him one of television's most memorable special agents.
After years of speculation and countless fan requests, DiNozzo is finally heading back to the flagship series. It's about time. The announcement marks one of the biggest casting surprises for NCIS heading into the 2026-2027 television season. While Weatherly recently stepped back into Tony's shoes for NCIS: Tony & Ziva on Paramount+, this return brings him back to the original series where audiences first fell in love with the quick-witted investigator.
For longtime viewers, it's hard to overstate what Tony DiNozzo means to the franchise. Weatherly spent 13 seasons as one of the core members of the Major Case Response Team, appearing in more than 300 episodes before departing in 2016. His mix of humor, pop culture references, heartfelt loyalty and undeniable chemistry with the rest of the team helped define an entire era of NCIS.
Now, he'll reunite with familiar faces including Sean Murray's McGee, Wilmer Valderrama's Torres, Brian Dietzen's Palmer, Diona Reasonover's Kasie, Katrina Law's Knight and Gary Cole's Parker as part of a season-long storyline.
The fact that CBS is committing to more than a simple guest appearance is what makes this announcement especially exciting. A season-long arc gives the writers room to do more than deliver nostalgic callbacks. Instead, it creates an opportunity to explore how Tony has changed after years away from the team and what his return means for the current dynamics inside NCIS.
That's a much smarter approach than a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo. Timing also plays a major role in why this feels like such a significant moment for the franchise. NCIS recently celebrated its milestone 500th episode and continues to hold the title as CBS' longest-running primetime drama while remaining the world's number one television franchise. Bringing back one of its most recognizable characters feels like a celebration of the show's history while also giving longtime viewers another reason to tune in each week.
Of course, fans are already asking the big questions. What brings Tony back? How will he reconnect with McGee after all these years? Will his trademark humor still be intact? And perhaps the biggest question of all: how much has life changed since viewers last saw him?
CBS isn't giving away those answers just yet, but the mystery only adds to the anticipation. Behind the scenes, Season 24 continues under executive producers Steven D. Binder, Chas. Floyd Johnson, Mark Harmon, Scott Williams, Christopher J. Waild, Mark R. Schilz, José Clemente Hernandez, Avery C. Drewe, Marco Schnabel and Donald P. Bellisario, with the series produced by CBS Studios.
For a franchise that has spent more than two decades evolving while introducing new agents and fresh storylines, bringing back Tony DiNozzo feels like the perfect way to honor its legacy without living entirely in the past. Familiar faces work best when they have a purpose, and a season-long arc suggests this return will have meaningful consequences rather than simply serving as fan service.
If you've been waiting for the day Tony DiNozzo walked back through those NCIS doors, your patience has officially paid off. Fall can't get here soon enough.
NCIS Season 24 premieres this fall and airs Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, with episodes also streaming on Paramount+.
