The viewers know that he is right but he appears to be obsessed, unraveling even. One has to wonder if he will meet the same fate as his late ex-wife. Meanwhile, Dexter has that familiar itch. “Tonight is the night,” he tells himself, determined to satisfy his Dark Passenger. Harry, ever the ghostly conscience, warns him that he has lost his "friends". Dexter concedes, admitting Harry was right. In an attempt to lure him into a trap, Dexter reaches out to Al for drinks. Al declines, he has plans to see Hamilton and a trip back to Wisconsin. He has to get to the missus. They compromise on coffee instead, but it’s soon clear that Al has slipped out of Dexter’s grasp. At the upcoming Gala, Prater surveys the setup with pride until noticing there’s no accessible path to the stage. Later Charlie warns him not to trust Red, urging him to take her instincts seriously. Prater brushes it off, he trusts Red and reminds Charlie to do her job, which is protect him. Elsewhere, Harrison tries to find balance in his own life. He takes Dante to the park, but trouble waits at home for Dante and Else. The landlord has cut off their heat. Harrison feels guilty, maybe it was his confrontation with Vinny that caused him to take drastic measures but Else assures him that it isn't on him. Back in his ritual, Dexter preps a kill room meant for Al. But Batista’s is nearby, he notices Dexter lingering too long in one place. Across town, Detective Wallace studies the Bay Harbor Butcher case. Her partner wants to attend Prater’s Gala, but she’s too engrossed in the investigation to join him. Hungry for release, Dexter takes solace in acupuncture, to ensure that his shoulder is ready to bear the weight of his plans. Later, a call from Harrison pulls him back into his double life. At dinner, they swap confessions: Harrison opens up about Dante, and Dexter admits he mishandled things with Blessing’s daughter. When Dexter offers to “talk” to Harrison’s landlord, Harrison mistakes it for a death threat, yet Dexter insists a talk is just a talk. Dexter’s plans unravel when Al sidesteps him and is on the road to Wisconsin. With Al out of reach, Dexter considers a substitute. Enter Vinny, Dexter pays him a visit to have that talk and Vinny is just as insufferable as he was the last time we saw him. It nearly pushes Dexter to the edge. Harrison, meanwhile, explores new beginnings by asking his campus friend out. They go dancing and I like this budding relationship. I enjoy that Harrison seems to still want a normal life. He is winning and his dark passenger doesn't seem to be rearing its ugly head. Dexter finally breaks his own rules. He lures Vinny to the kill room set up for Al. His intention wasn't to kill him, still, he hears a noise and cuts him loose. Dexter disappears, Vinny runs past a stunned Batista who later finds the kill room. Batista calls Wallace who arrives with her partner. The more and more he explains the empty room that has no blood, no sign of a struggle, the more unhinged he looks. The episode ends on a taut climax. The tension mounted throughout and now, a new threat looms because Dexter’s weakness has been exposed.  Jazz's Rating A solid 10/10. The pacing was done well, there was just enough Harrison to balance out the episode and while Batista seems to be unraveling, Wallace is gathering information. The question looms, is Harrison in danger?

I might be in the minority of critics out here, but honestly? I’m really enjoying The Rainmaker  on USA Network. Not every TV show has to be some groundbreaking masterpiece or mind-bending thriller. Sometimes, you just want solid entertainment and when done right, that’s more than enough. I said it after the pilot and I’ll say it again here: The Rainmaker  is basically what Suits: LA  thought it was but failed to deliver. Suits: LA  was all glitz and glamour with zero substance. The Rainmaker ? It’s got grit, it’s got heart, and dare I say it’s actually believable. Sure, the cast is easy on the eyes, but unlike other shows that rely purely on looks, this one brings the acting chops. There’s a genuine roughness and tension here that makes it feel like more than just pretty faces in fancy suits. Drawing from John Grisham’s novel and the 1997 movie, the series manages to carve out its own identity. It doesn’t lean on the original material too heavily but respects it enough to keep us hooked. Now, episode 2 got into some serious business, especially with the character Melvin Pritcher, played by Dan Fogler. At first, I thought Melvin was just a misunderstood weirdo, but nope, he’s a full-on murderer. Talk about a twist! I’m completely invested in his villain arc, mostly because Dan Fogler’s recent turn as a lovable good guy on The Walking Dead  made this dark side all the more shocking. I need to know what broke this guy and turned him into such a bad seed. The relationship drama between Rudy and Sarah also took center stage, and honey, it’s complicated. The chemistry is definitely there, but after Sarah threw Rudy under the bus by giving his opponent, Leo Drummond, dirt on Rudy’s dead brother, yeah, that’s a dealbreaker. Girl, do you care more about your career than your man? Because if so, I’m officially off Team Rudy & Sarah. It’s clear the show is building toward their breakup, and honestly, I’m kind of here for it. Rudy’s neighbor Kelly, who’s dealing with an abusive husband, seems to be pulling at his heartstrings. Rudy’s got a soft spot for damsels in distress, and that’s setting up some juicy new drama for the upcoming episodes. And can we talk about Lana Parrilla as Bruiser? Ma’am, I bow down. She’s absolutely owning her role as the badass boss with a spicy edge. That love scene? Girl had me fanning myself like crazy. I want more of her commanding presence and that sizzling energy on screen. Meanwhile, P.J. Byrne as Deck is providing some much-needed comedic relief, which balances out the heavier moments nicely. But I’m hoping we get more depth from his character soon, a backstory wouldn’t hurt! Milo Ventimiglia as Rudy is holding it down solidly. One of the emotional backbones of the series is the sweet bonding relationship he’s building with Dot. Their interactions add heart and depth, grounding the show amid all the legal chaos and personal drama. That said, I do wish there were more courtroom scenes. This is a legal drama after all and I’m craving some of those tense, edge-of-your-seat courtroom battles like in Law & Order  or Matlock . The show is building a strong foundation, but a few more legal showdowns would really elevate the series. So if you’re missing classic courtroom dramas and want something fresh yet familiar, lock into The Rainmaker  on USA. It’s gritty, it’s entertaining, and it’s got just the right amount of drama to keep you binge-watching. And for anyone wondering whether this legal drama is worth your time: it’s a yes from me.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds Recap “What Is Star Fleet?”, Season 3, Episode 7, Thurs 21 Aug 2025 This Documentary includes Security Footage from Umberto Ortegas. It’s been declassified by Starfleet Command in the Spirit of Transparency   This episode is a documentary on what Star Fleet Really Is, created by Umberto/Beto Ortegas. Is Star Fleet a peace loving explorer of strange new worlds or a colonizer? The starships are stocked with weapons ready to use when threatened.  Beto interviews CPT Pike, Commander Spock, his sister, Lieutenant Ortegas, First Officer Number One, Ensign Uhura and Commander La’an. Spock and La’an give the most revealing responses describing who they are and what Star Fleet means to them. His sister is just annoyed with Beto, and gives him non-answers. La’an tells Beto the weapons the Enterprise carries are defensive, but they do fight back when necessary. Dr. M’Benga is an enigma, a member of Star Fleet’s Special Forces. Ensign Uhura is very communicative. Beto doesn’t interview Nurse Chapel. He films the command crew in the Ready Room discussing their next mission to assist two warring planets, and transport a Jikaru, an alien species, from one planet to the next. It looks like a phosphorescent giant butterfly that lives in the ocean. The creature emits a loud shriek, then a quick surge of radiation. It was genetically engineered to be a weapon unknown to the Enterprise until they saw it in action. Captain Pike issues orders to rescue survivors from the ship that was attacked and he tells Beto to turn off the camera. Beto later reconnects his camera, and films a conversation between Uhura and Spock. Spock connected with the Jikaru and felt its aggressive nature. The Enterprise is pursued and attacked by the Jikaru, and severely damaged. Uhura’s last interview with Beto opens her eyes to what Beto’s really doing with his documentary.Spock and Uhura along with Nurse Chapel take a shuttle to communicate with the Jikaru. Spock is incapacitated. Uhura volunteers to connect with it, and feels that the Jikaru doesn’t want to be a weapon. It asks them to kill her. Captain Pike promises the Jikaru to protect her children on her home planet. The crew witnesses the intentional death of the Jikaru as it flings itself into their sun. Uhura gets Beto to see a different perspective and release his anger against Star Fleet. He understands now that the other side of Star Fleet is the people. Star Fleet is not the colonizer he once thought they were. This documentary version was the most revealing. You get to see the sides of the characters that make them who they are, and also the family of Star Fleet they create. This was an introspective look at the Enterprise crew and what they are called to do. Truly an interesting episode.

With Emmy nominations and a growing roster of original series, Apple wants to remind you they’re not just the iPhone company anymore. They’re the we-make-prestige-TV company too. There’s also the small matter of them reportedly losing around one billion dollars  a year running this service. So yes, they’re asking you to chip in a little more to keep the content machine rolling. Is It Still Worth Paying for Apple TV Plus? That depends. If you’re addicted to The Morning Show or can’t wait for the next season of Severance, you might find the new price tolerable. But if you’re barely opening the app and still wondering why you’re paying for it, the answer might be obvious. Here’s what to consider: The annual subscription  is still $99 per year . That breaks down to about $8.25 a month , which is way easier to swallow. The Apple One bundle  might be your golden ticket. For $19.95 a month , you get Apple TV Plus, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, and iCloud storage. If you’re already using two or more of those, it’s a no-brainer. How Does This Compare to Other Streaming Services? In the never-ending streaming wars, Apple TV Plus is still cheaper than Netflix’s standard plan and HBO Max’s premium tier. But unlike those giants, Apple’s catalog is smaller. They’re focused on quality over quantity, which sounds great until you run out of things to watch. So if you’re a binge-watcher who needs constant content to survive, you might be better off elsewhere. But if you love a tightly curated lineup with beautiful cinematography and slow-burn storytelling, Apple TV Plus is still punching above its weight. You Didn’t Ask For But Are Getting Anyway Apple TV Plus increasing its price to $12.99 a month is hardly shocking, but it’s definitely irritating. Ari Aster has built his reputation as one of the most talked-about horror filmmakers of this century, thanks to Hereditary, Midsommar, and Beau Is Afraid. Now, he steps away from horror for the first time with his neo-western Eddington. While I personally find Aster’s filmography hit-or-miss and even a bit overrated, I was curious to see how he’d handle a story outside of the horror realm. After finally watching it, here are my thoughts. From a technical standpoint, Aster certainly delivers. Darius Khondji’s cinematography is gorgeous—each frame feels like a homage to classic westerns, with sweeping landscapes and painterly compositions. Regardless of how I feel about his storytelling, Aster has always excelled visually, and that remains true here. One of the more surprising aspects is how well the film incorporates social media elements. The editing blends these digital snippets into the narrative without feeling gimmicky, adding to the lived-in world of the story. It gives the film a modern texture while keeping the pacing smooth—though not always engaging. The concept itself is intriguing: two political opponents vying for the position of mayor during the COVID pandemic. But because Aster revealed that he’s been working on this script since before Hereditary, the film feels like it’s been rewritten to death. The result is a narrative that drags and often comes across as unfocused. The COVID backdrop feels shoehorned in, when the same political themes—division, control, tension between left and right—could have been set in any era, including today’s climate. Where the film really stumbles is in its characters. The protagonist, a corrupt sheriff battling the current mayor, is written as such a relentless scumbag that he’s impossible to root for—even as an anti-hero. Most of the supporting characters aren’t fleshed out either, leaving the actors to do the heavy lifting. Joaquin Phoenix, however, is the clear standout. He sheds his Joker baggage and fully embodies the sheriff’s ruthlessness, delivering one of his strongest performances in recent years. He should absolutely be in the awards conversation. Unfortunately, the rest of the cast is wasted. Despite a stacked lineup—Austin Butler, Emma Stone, and the ever-present Pedro Pascal—none of them get material that lets them shine. Butler and Stone are relegated to near-cameos, while Pascal coasts on his usual movie-star presence. Ironically, the most memorable performances outside of Phoenix come from Deirdre O’Connell as the mother-in-law and Michael Ward as the deputy sheriff. When smaller supporting players outshine big-name talent like Butler and Stone, it’s clear the writing has let them down. One element I truly admired, though, was the score. Composers Bobby Krlic (Aster’s regular collaborator) and Daniel Pemberton deliver an atmospheric, intense soundtrack that adds dramatic weight and even a faint touch of eeriness. Honestly, it made me wonder what Eddington might have been like if Aster had leaned into horror-western territory—a blend that has worked beautifully in the past. In the end, Eddington proves that Aster has the range to step outside of horror, but the film is far from flawless. Its striking visuals, immersive editing, strong score, and Phoenix’s powerhouse performance make it worth watching, but the sluggish pacing, underwritten characters, and unnecessary COVID setting drag it down. I hope Aster continues to experiment with new genres, but ideally with stories that feel more alive and less tedious than this one. Rating: 3.5/5 stars (7/10) Thanks for reading!

Together, these two comedy powerhouses are cooking up something fresh and unexpected for network TV — and yes, it’s set in Altadena , a scenic California suburb known for its laid-back vibes and, recently, its brush with devastating wildfires. What’s This Show About Anyway? While details are still under wraps (because Hollywood loves a good mystery), here’s what we do know: the series will follow two brothers navigating life, family, and rebuilding  in the aftermath of a wildfire that upended their community. It’s part family comedy , part social commentary , and all parts potentially hilarious. Why Altadena and Why Now? Let’s face it: most sitcoms play it safe with settings. New York apartments. LA studios. Suburban everytowns with identical strip malls. But this show dares to go somewhere specific — Altadena  — and even more, it situates itself in a moment of rebuilding after real-life wildfires have rocked California communities. With climate change no longer a plot device but a real backdrop for daily life, the show taps into modern anxieties . CBS Goes Bold With Its Comedy Slate CBS may be best known for crime shows and multi-cam sitcoms where everyone’s clapping for the laugh track, but this project suggests a strategic shift . By bringing on Kenya Barris and Mike Epps, CBS is banking on cultural relevance  and unfiltered comedy  to keep audiences engaged. If this series takes off, it could mark a turning point in how the network approaches original content.
