What to Watch Saturday, September 5: Clemson vs. LSU, Haunted Harmony Mysteries & Crossroad Springs

Saturday television has officially entered its football has taken over the building era.

The first full Saturday of the 2026 college football season stretches from noon until well after midnight, with defending national champion Indiana, Alabama, Oregon, Texas, Michigan and LSU all getting major television windows. The biggest matchup waits until primetime, when Clemson visits No. 11 LSU for Lane Kiffin's first game as LSU's head coach.

But friend, I know everybody coming to The TV Cave is not trying to spend 12 consecutive hours watching college football. Hallmark has a new Haunted Harmony Mysteries movie, Lifetime premieres the Roxane Gay biopic Surviving the Silence, and Crossroad Springs begins its second season on Great American Family. So yes, there are escape routes.

TV Cave Top Pick: Clemson vs. LSU

There are plenty of games today, but Clemson at LSU is the one getting the Top Pick.

The Tigers meet at 7:30 PM ET on ABC from Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, with Clemson opening its season against No. 11 LSU. The matchup is the return game of the home-and-home series after LSU defeated Clemson 17-10 last season. More importantly, tonight marks Lane Kiffin's first game as LSU's head coach.

ESPN is treating the matchup accordingly. College GameDay begins its 40th season from Baton Rouge this morning, and today's broadcast is also the show's 500th on-location edition. That's quite a way to start a season.

There has already been off-field drama surrounding LSU's roster, too. The school left former professional players Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris off today's opening-game roster despite a Louisiana judge granting a preliminary injunction that could have allowed them to play amid an ongoing eligibility dispute involving the SEC and NCAA.

We haven't even reached kickoff and this game already has storylines.

Oregon Gets a Big CBS Showcase

One of the day's more interesting afternoon games has Boise State visiting No. 2 Oregon at 3:30 PM ET on CBS and Paramount+.

Oregon enters the season with the highest preseason ranking in program history, while quarterback Dante Moore returns after choosing another college season over entering the NFL Draft. Boise State, meanwhile, begins its first season as a Pac-12 member by immediately walking into Autzen Stadium to face the No. 2 team in the country. Welcome to the conference, I guess.

CBS has made Boise State-Oregon the first game of its 2026 college football package, giving the matchup one of Saturday's biggest national windows. Between this, Alabama at noon and Clemson-LSU at night, you can basically turn on broadcast television this morning and remain planted on the couch until bedtime.

Michigan Begins a New Era in Primetime

NBC launches another season of Big Ten Saturday Night with Western Michigan visiting No. 16 Michigan at 7:30 PM ET, and there is a pretty significant reason this opener deserves attention.

Kyle Whittingham makes his Michigan coaching debut after leaving Utah, while highly touted quarterback Bryce Underwood returns to lead the Wolverines offense. Western Michigan isn't exactly arriving simply to admire the Big House, either; the Broncos are the defending MAC champions and return 2025 MAC Offensive Player of the Year Broc Lowry at quarterback.

NBC's coverage begins at 7 PM with Big Ten College Countdown before kickoff at 7:30, putting Michigan directly opposite Clemson-LSU on ABC. College football really looked at primetime tonight and said, “Choose.”

Hallmark Has a Murder at a Wedding

For everyone who just read three consecutive football sections and thought, friend, absolutely not, Hallmark Channel understands you.

Haunted Harmony Mysteries: Prelude to a Wedding premieres at 8 PM ET, bringing Tamera Mowry-Housley back as Gethsemane Brown alongside Risteard Cooper's Eamon McCarthy. This time, Gethsemane is invited to perform at a wedding, only for the celebration to turn into another investigation after someone in the bridal party dies.

Listen, at this point, if Gethsemane Brown is invited to your event, maybe just reschedule. The movie also stars Marco Grazzini and will begin streaming Sunday on Hallmark+.

Lifetime Tells Roxane Gay's Story

Lifetime goes considerably heavier at 8 PM ET with Surviving the Silence: The Roxane Gay Story.

The film dramatizes the childhood of writer Roxane Gay and the sexual violence she experienced at age 12, an event she has written about publicly and explored in her memoir Hunger. Lifetime lists the film as TV-14 and has Gay narrating the story herself.

Given the subject matter, this is obviously a very different kind of Saturday-night movie from Hallmark's mystery. Viewers should know going in that the film deals directly with childhood sexual assault and its aftermath.

Crossroad Springs Returns to Great American Family

Crossroad Springs begins its Season 2 television run tonight at 8 PM ET on Great American Family and GFAM+, following the season's streaming launch Thursday on Great American Pure Flix.

The Hamilton family enters the new season with plenty changing around Red Oak Ranch. James continues building his Cowboy Church, Maggie begins working toward a community food pantry, Janet gets an unexpected visit from Eric and the longstanding tension between the Hamilton and Newman families isn't exactly disappearing. The return of Jackson Newman — with a wife and daughter his family wasn't expecting — adds another complication almost immediately.

Great American Media will air the first five episodes this fall before pausing the season for its Christmas programming, with the remaining five episodes scheduled for January 2027.

So if football isn't happening in your house, 8 PM actually has three very different alternatives: a supernatural-tinged Hallmark mystery, a serious Lifetime biopic or a family ranch drama.

Saturday Is Basically College Football From Breakfast Until Bed

FOX starts the national action at noon with North Texas visiting defending national champion No. 6 Indiana, while ABC has East Carolina at Alabama and ESPN carries Oregon State-Houston.

The afternoon brings Boise State-Oregon, Baylor-Auburn and Texas State-Texas before Clemson-LSU and Western Michigan-Michigan take over primetime. Then, because apparently 10 hours of football isn't sufficient, The CW has UNLV-Hawaii at 10 PM and ESPN closes the night with UCLA-Cal at 10:30 PM.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Open continues its third round with coverage beginning at 11 AM on ESPN2, followed by the primetime session at 7 PM.

In other words, Saturday has officially changed seasons. Summer TV had its moment.

College football has the remote now.
