Neon red rings frame the title OTHER WORLDS, with A STRANGER THINGS ADVENTURE on a starry black background.

Thought we were finished with the Upside Down? Netflix has other plans. The streamer celebrated Stranger Things Day on Friday, November 6, by officially announcing Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, a new live-action prequel series set to premiere in 2028.

And we're not heading back to Hawkins this time. The upcoming series will take fans to Marion, Nevada, in the 1950s, decades before Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and the rest of the gang discovered the supernatural nightmares lurking beneath their hometown.

A New Mystery Before Hawkins

Other Worlds takes place in 1955, even before the events of the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which explores Henry Creel's troubled past in Hawkins in 1959. Instead of revisiting the original gang's adventures, the new series will introduce an entirely different setting, new heroes, and new villains.

Netflix also released a creepy announcement teaser featuring an abandoned bicycle, an old-fashioned radio, and an ominous sky. The footage reveals the date April 19, 1955, in Marion, Nevada, suggesting that whatever happened there could have some serious connections to the supernatural mysteries fans already know.

The Duffer Brothers aren't giving away much about the story just yet, but they've made it clear this won't simply be another trip down memory lane. The goal is to expand the mythology of Stranger Things while introducing a fresh adventure that can stand on its own.

The Duffer Brothers Are Back

Matt and Ross Duffer are developing the series alongside longtime Stranger Things writer Kate Trefry, who will serve as showrunner, co-creator, and executive producer. Trefry also wrote Stranger Things: The First Shadow, making her no stranger to digging into the franchise's complicated history.

Joe Wright, whose credits include Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, and Darkest Hour, will direct the first three episodes. Production is set to take place in New Mexico, although casting announcements haven't been made yet.

The original Stranger Things wrapped up its five-season run in 2025, but Netflix clearly isn't ready to close the door on the franchise. Between the animated spinoff Stranger Things: Tales From '85, the stage production, and now Other Worlds, there's still plenty of supernatural trouble to explore.

Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2028, with an exact release date still to be announced. And while we're getting an entirely new group of characters, something tells us the residents of Marion are about to have a very bad time.
