The Outer Banks may be saying goodbye to John B and the Pogues, but Netflix apparently isn't ready to leave Kildare behind. A potential Outer Banks prequel is in development, giving the hit Netflix franchise a chance to explore the history of the island long before treasure hunts, family feuds and questionable teenage decisions became the norm.
The project, reportedly titled Kildare, would take viewers roughly 20 years before the events of the original series. Rather than continuing the story after the upcoming fifth and final season, the prequel would explore how the world fans already know came to be, including the origins of the divide between Kildare's wealthy Kooks and working class Pogues.
And honestly, that might be exactly the story the franchise needs.
Netflix Wants More Outer Banks, Just Not More of the Same
The biggest question surrounding Kildare is what an Outer Banks story looks like without John B and his friends at the center of it. The answer appears to be a deeper look at the island itself.
The original series has always treated Kildare almost like another character. The beaches, marshes, mansions and working class neighborhoods aren't simply scenery. They are part of the show's identity, and the enormous gap between the people who have money and those who don't has fueled plenty of the series' conflicts.
Going back approximately two decades could allow the creators to show how that divide developed in the first place.
Creators Josh Pate and Shannon Burke have been developing the prequel with Netflix, with the story expected to introduce a new generation while connecting back to the mythology established by Outer Banks. The project is still in development, however, so fans should resist the urge to start making a Netflix countdown just yet.
What Would the Outer Banks Prequel Be About?
Details remain limited, but the central idea is particularly intriguing. Kildare would explore the history behind the island's Kook and Pogue class divide and what created the social lines that eventually shaped the lives of John B, Sarah Cameron, Kiara, Pope, JJ and their friends.
That means the prequel has an opportunity to answer questions the original series has largely left in the background.
Who established the island's most powerful families? How did the wealthy residents gain such control over Kildare? When did being a Pogue become more than simply living on the wrong side of town? And, perhaps most importantly, how many family secrets have been sitting there all along?
Those questions could give Kildare a more grounded story while still leaving room for the mystery and adventure that made Outer Banks such a hit.
Could Familiar Outer Banks Characters Appear?
Don't expect the original cast to simply show up as their current characters. A story taking place roughly 20 years earlier means the focus would naturally shift to an older generation. That doesn't mean fans should expect zero familiar connections.
The prequel could explore parents, relatives and other figures whose actions eventually shaped the world inhabited by the original characters. That gives the series plenty of opportunities for connections without turning it into a simple reboot.
For longtime viewers, that may actually be more rewarding than trying to recreate the original Pogues with a new group of teenagers.
Is Kildare Officially Ordered by Netflix?
Here's where fans need to pump the brakes.
Kildare is in development, but Netflix has not officially announced a series order at this time. The creative team is working on the project with Netflix, but there is no confirmed premiere date or production schedule for the potential prequel.
That distinction is important, especially with Outer Banks Season 5 serving as the show's final season. The existence of a prequel project does not mean Netflix has already guaranteed another series.
Still, the fact that the creators are developing the idea suggests the Outer Banks universe could have life beyond the original five season story.
The Timing Couldn't Be More Interesting
Netflix is preparing to release the final season of Outer Banks, so the possibility of a prequel arriving in development at the same time feels very intentional.
Fans may be getting ready to close the book on John B and the Pogues, but Kildare could turn the page rather than simply ending the story altogether.
There is also something appealing about going backward. The original series spent years introducing viewers to the rival worlds of the Kooks and Pogues. Now, instead of asking what happens next, the prequel can ask a much more interesting question: how did all of this begin?
For now, Kildare remains a project to watch rather than a confirmed Netflix premiere. But if the prequel moves forward, the Outer Banks universe could get the chance to prove that its biggest story was never only about finding treasure. It was about the families, history and social divisions buried underneath Kildare all along.
And yes, girl, we have questions.
