Just when Sons of Anarchy fans thought they had made peace with the fact that SAMCRO was never riding back onto their screens, FX has another trick up its sleeve. The cast of the beloved biker drama is reuniting for a new limited series called Legends, and whew, the concept is far more unexpected than a traditional sequel.
FX has ordered Legends, which brings together a major portion of the original Sons of Anarchy cast more than a decade after the series came to an end. Charlie Hunnam is leading the project, which he developed with Jonathan Groff, and the series is designed to play with the line between the television world fans remember and reality itself.
The Sons of Anarchy Cast Is Back Together
The reunion alone is enough to get longtime fans reaching for their leather vests. Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi are all set to return for Legends. That means a whole lot of familiar faces from the original FX hit will once again share the screen. Of course, there is one enormous catch: fans should not expect everyone to simply slip back into their old Sons of Anarchy roles.
Legends takes a meta approach, with the actors playing fictionalized versions of themselves rather than simply resurrecting Jax Teller, Clay Morrow, Gemma Teller Morrow, Tara Knowles, Bobby Munson, Chibs Telford, Tig Trager and Juice Ortiz. The premise reportedly centers on the Sons of Anarchy cast coming together for a fan convention years after the original show ended, only for the reunion to take a much darker turn. The story begins blurring the boundary between the world of the actors and the fictional world they once inhabited. And honestly, that is a pretty clever way to revisit Sons of Anarchy without undoing its ending.
Why the Legends Concept Could Actually Work
There is always a little danger when a beloved television series gets revisited years after its finale. Fans remember the original characters, relationships and shocking twists very clearly, so simply throwing the old cast back together and pretending nothing happened would probably feel forced.
Legends appears to be taking a different route. Rather than trying to recreate SAMCRO, the limited series can acknowledge the enormous cultural footprint of Sons of Anarchy while giving its actors something completely different to play.
That distinction matters. Sons of Anarchy ran for seven seasons from 2008 through 2014 and became one of FX's signature dramas, following Jax Teller and the members of the outlaw motorcycle club SAMCRO. The ensemble was a major part of the show's appeal, with Hunnam, Sagal, Perlman, Siff, Flanagan, Coates, Rossi and Boone Junior among the performers who helped make the series such a memorable television experience.
Bringing those performers together again gives Legends an immediate emotional connection with the original series without requiring the story to rewrite its history.
Charlie Hunnam Is Behind the Reunion
Hunnam isn't simply returning as the familiar face fans associate with Jax Teller. He helped develop Legends alongside Jonathan Groff and will executive produce the project. The creative setup suggests this reunion is coming from someone who understands why the original cast and characters still mean so much to viewers.
That could be the secret ingredient here. The premise has room to poke fun at celebrity, fandom and the expectations surrounding a beloved television franchise while still delivering the darker storytelling audiences associate with Sons of Anarchy. And yes, the idea of the Sons of Anarchy cast attending a fan convention together already sounds like the kind of situation that could go spectacularly sideways.
When Will Legends Premiere?
There is currently no premiere date for Legends. FX has announced the limited series order and its principal cast, but additional details about production and the release schedule are still to come.
For now, fans have a pretty significant reason to start talking about Sons of Anarchy again. The original series may have ended in 2014, but its cast is getting another opportunity to ride together.
Whether Legends becomes a clever continuation of the show's legacy or simply a very entertaining trip down memory lane remains to be seen. But with Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, Theo Rossi and Mark Boone Junior back in the same orbit, there is already plenty here to make Sons of Anarchy fans pay attention.
One thing is certain: SAMCRO may be history, but apparently these legends aren't finished with us yet.
