Jay-Z Is Taking Over the 2027 Super Bowl Halftime Show

Well, look who finally decided to take the stage himself!
After years of helping decide which artists get the coveted Super Bowl halftime spotlight, Jay-Z is stepping out from behind the scenes and into the main event. The hip-hop legend has officially been announced as the headliner for the 2027 Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show, taking place February 14 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
And considering the musical empire he's built, the only real question is why it took this long.
From Calling the Shots to Taking the Stage
Since 2019, Jay-Z's entertainment company, Roc Nation, has worked alongside the NFL to shape its live music entertainment, including the Super Bowl halftime show. The partnership has helped bring some of music's biggest stars to football's biggest stage.
Now, after years of having a hand in the selections, the 25-time Grammy winner is getting his own moment in the spotlight. It's certainly an interesting full-circle development, especially considering the conversation surrounding who would headline this year's event. Reports began circulating earlier this month that Jay-Z had selected himself for the performance, with names including Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus reportedly under consideration. Naturally, that sparked plenty of reactions online because being involved in choosing the headliner and ultimately becoming the headliner yourself is quite the plot twist. But let's not pretend we're talking about someone who doesn't have the catalog to back it up.
The Hits Are There, but Who's Coming Along?
With a career spanning three decades, Jay-Z has more than enough material to fill a halftime setlist. From "99 Problems" and "Hard Knock Life" to "Empire State of Mind," the rapper has a collection of hits that could turn the stadium into one massive sing-along.
Of course, the bigger question might be who joins him onstage. His wife, Beyoncé, is an obvious name fans will be throwing around, especially considering their collaborations on songs like "Crazy in Love" and "Drunk in Love." Alicia Keys would also make sense for "Empire State of Mind," while collaborations throughout his career leave plenty of opportunities for surprise appearances. For now, however, no special guests have been confirmed, so the dream setlists will have to remain exactly that.
A Super Bowl Moment Years in the Making
Jay-Z's upcoming performance also arrives during a celebration of his musical legacy, including the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint. Both albums helped establish his place in hip-hop history, making this another major milestone in an already impressive career.
The performance follows Bad Bunny's 2026 Super Bowl halftime show, continuing the NFL's run of major artists commanding one of television's biggest stages. There is also something fitting about Jay-Z finally getting his chance after helping shape the event for so many other performers. Whether he delivers a career-spanning celebration, brings out a parade of famous collaborators, or surprises everyone with something unexpected, expectations will undoubtedly be high.
Super Bowl LXI takes place Sunday, February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium and will air on ABC and ESPN.
Now, the important question: Is Beyoncé making an appearance, or are we all getting our hopes up for nothing?
