Hulu’s ‘Clown Panic’ Trailer Takes Us Back to the Bizarre 2016 Clown Scare

Remember when people were spotting creepy clowns in the woods, schools were going into lockdown and social media was convinced something sinister was happening across America? Somehow, that was already 10 years ago, and Hulu is revisiting the bizarre 2016 phenomenon in its new documentary Clown Panic.

The streamer has released the official trailer for the upcoming film, which examines how reports of mysterious clowns quickly escalated into a nationwide frenzy. What began with children in a South Carolina community saying they had seen clowns hiding in the woods soon spread across the country, leading to police investigations, school lockdowns and nonstop media coverage.

And whew, 2016 really was a time. The trailer mixes chilling archival footage and viral internet clips with new interviews from witnesses, law enforcement officials, professional clowns and cultural commentators. Rather than simply replaying the weirdest moments, Clown Panic looks at how fear, social media and a tense national mood helped turn scattered reports into something much bigger.

That also means the documentary is not presenting every creepy-clown story as fact. Instead, the film appears interested in how an urban legend, real-world incidents and copycat behavior blurred together until people were genuinely unsure what was happening, which is probably why the whole thing became so difficult to ignore.

There is also an unexpectedly funny side to the story, particularly for the actual professional clowns who suddenly found themselves associated with the panic. Hulu describes the film as darkly funny, unsettling and emotional, and the trailer definitely plays with that strange mix of absurdity and genuine fear.

Clown Panic is directed by Ed Perkins, whose previous documentary work includes Tell Me Who I Am and The Princess. Jonathan Chinn and Simon Chinn of Lightbox produce the film, with Suzanne Lavery serving as executive producer.

The timing also could not be more fitting. Hulu is releasing the documentary as part of its annual Huluween programming, exactly a decade after the clown sightings became one of the strangest viral stories of 2016.
