‘Darkwing Duck’ Returns With New Disney+ Series Led by Mark Hamill

Disney+ is officially bringing Darkwing Duck back to television, and the new animated series has assembled quite the voice cast. Mark Hamill will lead the revival as Drake Mallard, aka Darkwing Duck, with Seth Rogen stepping into the role of Launchpad McQuack.

The new series comes more than three decades after the original Darkwing Duck debuted in 1991. Disney has positioned the project as a continuation that finds Drake stuck in an alternate world where nobody remembers his years as a superhero, which may be the worst possible situation for a guy with an ego like Darkwing's.

That changes when a rebellious teenager named Duckie shows up with full knowledge of his heroic past and pushes him back into action. Lilimar will voice Duckie, while Lizzy Caplan joins the cast as Gosalyn Mallard, Dan Stevens plays Glade McTowers, Tiffany Shepis voices Rosa and Kathryn Newton takes on the role of Firecracker.

The new adventure will also bring back some familiar threats from Darkwing's past. Negaduck and Megavolt are among the enemies set to return, while Drake will reunite with allies including Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana as the group attempts to save the universe.

Hamill is no stranger to animation, of course, with decades of voice work that includes his iconic run as the Joker across multiple DC animated projects. Rogen is also serving as an executive producer through Point Grey Pictures alongside Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee and Gabby Grantham.

Sean Tretta and Borja Peña Gorostegui are executive producing the new Darkwing Duck, while original series creator Tad Stones consulted on the development of the revival. That connection to the original series should give longtime fans at least one reason to be curious about how Disney plans to update the character for a new generation.

The original Darkwing Duck followed Drake Mallard as he balanced suburban life with his crime-fighting alter ego. The series ran for three seasons and 91 episodes, becoming one of Disney's most recognizable animated shows of the early 1990s.

Disney+ has not announced a premiere date for the new series yet. With Hamill in the cape, Rogen behind Launchpad and several classic characters returning, however, Darkwing is officially ready to get dangerous again.
