Days of Our Lives Brings Brandon Butler Back to Salem But Not as Zack Brady

Well, this is one way to return from the dead without actually returning from the dead.

Brandon Butler is headed back to Days of Our Lives, but viewers shouldn't expect to see him playing Zack Brady again. The actor has been cast as a brand-new character named Mason Whitfield, with his first episode set to stream Tuesday, September 1 on Peacock.

It's an interesting bit of soap casting considering Butler appeared on Days just last year as the adult version of Bo and Hope Brady's late son. Now the same familiar face is coming back to Salem with a new name, a new character and, presumably, a much better chance of sticking around among the living.

From Zack Brady to Mason Whitfield

Butler made his Days of Our Lives debut in the June 2, 2025 episode during Bo Brady's health crisis. With Bo in a coma, he encountered his deceased son Zack, now appearing as an adult, who encouraged his father to wake up and return to his family.

The emotional appearance was connected to one of the Brady family's most painful stories. Zack, the son of Bo and Hope, died as a child following a hit-and-run accident in 2006. Butler took over the adult version of the role from Scott Shilstone, who previously appeared as Zack in Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem.

Butler's upcoming return has nothing to do with Zack, however. He's stepping into the role of Mason Whitfield, and Days is keeping details about exactly who Mason is and what brings him to Salem under wraps for now. That leaves plenty of room for speculation. This is Salem, after all. A new character rarely shows up just because the rent is reasonable.

Brandon Butler Has a Personal Connection to ‘Days’

The show introduced Butler's new character through a social media video in which the actor shared several facts about himself ahead of his September debut. The final one carried considerably more meaning than your average cast introduction.

Butler revealed that Days of Our Lives was his late mother's favorite television show and dedicated this new opportunity to her. That makes his return to the series particularly special, especially now that he's coming aboard as an entirely new character rather than appearing for a one-off dream sequence.

Outside of Salem, viewers may recognize Butler from Netflix's 13 Reasons Why and Trinkets, Peacock's Hysteria! and CBS's SEAL Team. He also has another soap connection: Butler made a brief appearance on General Hospital in 2016, years before his first trip to Salem.

Salem Is Getting Some New Faces

Butler's casting comes during an interesting stretch of additions to the Days of Our Lives canvas.

Sydney Malakeh is also preparing to make her debut in a mystery role on September 9. Meanwhile, former General Hospital and The Young and the Restless star Brytni Sarpy has joined the cast in another undisclosed role, although viewers won't see her onscreen until 2027 because of Days' unusually far-ahead production schedule.

For now, Mason Whitfield remains the mystery closest to being solved. Butler arrives next week, so it shouldn't take long before viewers discover where Salem's newest resident fits into the picture and whether he's about to become somebody's friend, enemy, love interest or long-lost relative nobody remembered to mention. Because again, this is Salem.
