Bianca is one of the most relatable characters I’ve encountered. I too am 40, work in corporate (and hate it) and just want to enjoy some baked goods in Italy. Her friendship with her bestie reminds me of the chaos in my own bestie friendship. I loved everything about this book except that it ended. Fronting a live band for a 45-minute set, Reid gave 2,900 lucky, "rock star chic" dressed fans a taste of the music that will define the upcoming season. Whew, the FOMO was incredibly real for the rest of us. Fortunately, the upcoming streaming release captures every single ounce of that sweat-soaked, gothic energy. Visually, the concert is a triumph of high-camp theatricality. Reid commands the stage with a terrifyingly charismatic swagger, fully embodying Anne Rice’s infamous Brat Prince. Last week on Beyond The Gates, the Kill Bill story STILL dragged on, someone may have a stalker, and the clinic got a new employee. Monday Andre was obsessed with the bottle of champagne he and Dani received as a wedding gift. Every time we, the audience, got a glimpse through his memories of who may have sent it, Dani interrupted. Hmm, so it seems Andre left someone behind who might be a little like Alison or Leslie, or worse. Andre also orbited Ashley as a friend. I would protest, but the writers love going against the viewers’ wishes. See Bill and Dani’s elevator-floor rut. That is what I don’t get. Dandre took off like the writers couldn’t believe it, but they still went forward with plans to destroy them for Bill. I digress. Pamela met Kial and tried to recruit him because Pamela tries to recruit everyone. You know, it would be nice to see the agency actually have models. She invited Dani, who told her she had plans with Andre. Pam told her to bring him along since the meeting involved him too. Pam informed the couple that Tia Allen’s people wanted to interview Dani and her family. Andre looked absolutely gutted. He was scared because he could not wiggle his way out of this one. He and Dani talked it through, but there was nowhere for him to escape. As they talked, someone watched them from outside the club. Dani cannot be too outraged by whatever Andre is hiding, considering she was doing the horizontal boogie with Bill. Vanessa met Heather, who spoke about Joey and acted more like an ex-lover than a sister. It was gross in a Claudia Zacharra kind of way. Martin nearly lost it. It has been a year since everything came out and, to be honest, this arc was boring. Smitty sprained his ankle. Nicole and Ted tested each other’s temperature when Nicole stopped by his office to let him know that she knew he was in love with Shanice. Whew, that was a mouthful. It is clear these two still love each other but do not know how to find their way back to one another. When Ted mentioned Nicole falling in love again, she said she was not ready. I cannot help but think that is because Ted is the only man she will ever love. Tuesday Eva interviewed Kyle’s youngest son, which was odd because he is supposed to be paired with Deanna but looks much older than her. Eva had valid concerns about his lack of experience and his desire to be a musician. Of course, Leslie stepped in and decided to give him a chance. Insert heavy eyeroll. Dani and Andre basked in the afterglow, and she reassured him about the interview. Nicole called and asked to meet up, so Dani got ready to leave. She later found Andre studying the card that came with the champagne and reassured him that models receive gifts all the time. This could actually be a good story if done right, but I have no faith in it being done right. Kill Bill has been going on for a year. The audience has all but begged for it to end, and yet here we are. After doing her good deed for the day, Leslie interrupted Nicole and Dani during their lunch at the country club. Leslie once again tried to come for Nicole, and Dani threatened her with a knife. Nicole delighted in telling Leslie that Ted was in love with Shanice, which sent Leslie running off to confront him. Deanna and Kat met at Orphey’s, and this is a friendship I can support. Deanna asked for advice about Joey, and Kat gave it. Izaiah came in, and Deanna talked about what a great counselor he was. He checked in on her mental health, and for a moment, it seemed like she might be crushing on him. Later, Noah came in and paid Deanna back. They talked about going out together to get to know one another. Wednesday After radiation, Anita was feeling good and wanted to paint the town red. She called on her family to meet her at The Uptown. Izaiah wanted to take Eva out for a night on the town. You see where this is going? Eva was in some pain, and I think she may be rejecting her sister’s liver or experiencing some other medical issue. Jacob and Smitty caught up on this boring blood story. Leslie went to Ted to tell him that being with Shanice was a mistake. She cried and pleaded, then finally, and hopefully for the last time, gave up. The Duprees gathered at The Uptown and formed a Soul Train line. It was a fun scene.Noah met Anita and overly fanboyed. Vanessa gave Leslie advice that she surely will not take. Thursday Hayley ignored Bill’s health issues, but his daughters did not. When they came over to encourage him to seek medical attention and follow-up care, Hayley threw them out, and Bill stood beside her. Want to know what I hate? Clear plot-device writing. Bill is a top attorney. You do not reach that level by being stupid, yet everything he does when it comes to Hayley requires him to be exactly that. She is a walking red flag, and somehow he cannot see red. It is beyond ridiculous, and it feels like the writers are hedging so they can keep Hayley around longer. Maybe they need a jail set. I will settle for Jacob’s warehouse with bars. Kat and Martin caught up. Shanice acted more and more like a simple-minded woman when she loudly blurted out a question about Nicole and Kial being in love. It was an obvious display of insecurity because that is what Shanice has become with Ted: an insecure birdbrain. Friday The Dupree cousins caught Dani up on everything that had been happening with Bill and Hayley. We all knew Dani was going to traipse over there to confront Bill. Meanwhile, Hayley and Randy acquired more poison. Here is my thing: We know they are not getting rid of Timon. He is one of the best male actors on the show, selected from a very limited pool. Why would we believe Bill would survive after all these rounds of poisoning? Please end this ridiculous story. Bill developed tremors, and Dani went over to talk to him. The two of them did their usual dance. Dani left her glasses behind, which Hayley later found. Hayley then texted Dani and told her to stay out of her house. Kat is on the case. The Dupree cousins discussed Hayley, and Kat even brought up wives who try to murder their husbands. I would not be mad at this trio figuring everything out. Let’s keep Dani out of it, though. Please, for the love of everything, give that woman a real story. Final Thoughts on the Week This week was just okay and pretty slow. The same issues, followed by endless repetitions of those same issues, make me want to walk away from the show for a while. But I will be here recapping.

With Season 2 premiering in late August, Hulu dropped a surprise prequel episode to hold us over in the meantime. Telling the story of how the gang first met Paul Baker, the episode now serves as the show's official pilot, and it couldn't fit into the series more seamlessly. While hanging out in the living room watching coverage of the New York City Marathon, the gang discovers that Anton lied to his coworkers and told them he was running the race. The episode follows their elaborate scheme to fake Anton's marathon experience and highlights just how far this group is willing to go for one another. While Anton isn't the only one caught in a web of lies, there's certainly no shortage of friends covering for each other. Enter the long-awaited arrival of Paul Baker. After swearing off helping men while talking to Samir, Issa's resolution lasts only moments before Paul Baker collapses right in front of her. How could she not jump into action to save the attractive marathon runner? Watching Paul Baker slip into the group as though he'd always been there was one of my favorite parts of the episode. While we already knew Issa was the one who introduced him to everyone, I loved that he also got a memorable meet-cute with Anton. After the way Season 1 ended, it's clear that Anton and Paul Baker had chemistry from the very beginning of their relationship. Adults is one of those shows that never fails to make me laugh. It does an excellent job of embracing the messiness of your early twenties without sugarcoating it. It even reminds us to laugh through the awkward moments in life. At its core, the series reminds us that if you have the right people around you, you can get through just about anything, even faking a marathon. Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw truly struck gold with this cast because they feel like a real group of friends. You completely believe they've known each other forever. What I appreciate most about the writing- and this episode in particular- is how naturally the conversations flow from one character to the next. While they constantly get on each other's nerves, there's an undeniable amount of love underneath all the teasing and sarcastic digs. If this is what we're getting from a prequel episode, I have no doubt Season 2 is going to be even better than the first. With the episode titles and plot teases already released, it looks like we're in for plenty of laughs, memorable guest stars, and the kind of chaotic antics that always seem to land this group in trouble.
