What to Watch Saturday, September 12: Ohio State-Texas, Creative Arts Emmys & Angel in the Rubble

Saturday is asking you to choose between one of the biggest college-football games of the young season and television celebrating itself, which feels almost unfair. No. 1 Ohio State visits No. 4 Texas in a top-five primetime showdown, while FXX airs the edited Creative Arts Emmy Awards ahead of Monday's main ceremony. Earlier in the day, Oklahoma-Michigan, Oregon-Oklahoma State and Alabama-Kentucky give football fans plenty of reasons to surrender the remote before dinner.

For everyone who does not plan to spend 12 hours discussing rankings and third-down conversions, Saturday has alternatives. Lifetime premieres Robin Roberts Presents Angel in the Rubble: The Genelle Guzman Story, starring Sherri Shepherd in the true story of the last survivor pulled alive from the World Trade Center rubble. Hallmark has the fall romance Falling Into Place, and Have I Got News for You returns for Season 5.

TV Cave Top Pick: Ohio State vs. Texas

Saturday's Top Pick belongs to college football again, and this one wasn't particularly difficult.

No. 1 Ohio State visits No. 4 Texas at 7:30 PM ET on ABC, putting two legitimate national-title contenders against each other in Austin during Week 2. The Buckeyes opened their season by crushing Ball State 56-3, while Texas rolled past Texas State 59-7, so neither team has exactly been asked to show all its cards yet. That changes tonight.

This is the kind of September matchup that immediately changes the national conversation. The winner gets an early résumé victory that could matter considerably once the College Football Playoff rankings arrive, while the loser spends the next several weeks listening to people explain why its season is definitely over even though it is September 12. College football is nothing if not wonderfully dramatic.

The Creative Arts Emmys Get Their TV Night

The Primetime Emmys aren't until Monday, but television gets an awards-show warmup tonight when The 78th Emmy Awards: Creative Arts airs at 8 PM ET/PT on FXX. The broadcast combines highlights from the two Creative Arts ceremonies held September 5 and 6 into one edited presentation, with streaming beginning Sunday on Hulu.

And plenty already happened. Widow's Bay led the weekend with eight wins, Bad Bunny's Super Bowl LX Halftime Show collected seven, The Traitors earned six and the recently canceled Spider-Noir walked away with five trophies. Yes, Spider-Noir won five Emmys almost immediately after being canceled. Television can be a deeply unserious business sometimes.

There are also some history-making moments worth seeing, including Julie Andrews winning for her voice work as Lady Whistledown on Bridgerton. Tonight's broadcast sets the stage for the main ceremony Monday at 8 PM ET on NBC and Peacock, hosted by Mariska Hargitay.

Sherri Shepherd Tells Genelle Guzman's Survival Story

Lifetime continues the weekend's 25th-anniversary remembrance of September 11 with Robin Roberts Presents Angel in the Rubble: The Genelle Guzman Story at 8 PM ET.

Sherri Shepherd portrays Genelle Guzman, who survived for approximately 27 hours beneath the rubble of the World Trade Center's North Tower before rescuers found her. Guzman was the last person pulled alive from the wreckage. The movie is based on her memoir and co-stars Dondré T. Whitfield.

One part of Guzman's account has remained especially powerful over the years. While trapped, she recalls a man named Paul holding her hand and reassuring her that help was coming. Guzman later learned that nobody involved in the rescue could identify him, and she came to believe the encounter was spiritual.

Shepherd met Guzman while preparing for the role and has spoken about feeling a responsibility to portray her experience carefully. Given that this premiere comes one day after the 25th anniversary of the attacks, the movie arrives as part of a much larger weekend of remembrance rather than simply another Lifetime Saturday-night drama.

Oklahoma-Michigan Gives Noon a Main Event

You don't have to wait until primetime for an important football game.

No. 11 Oklahoma visits Michigan at noon on FOX, with the Wolverines trying to look considerably more convincing than they did in their opener. Michigan escaped Western Michigan 13-12 last Saturday after a controversial replay review restored one second to the clock, allowing Bryce Underwood to throw the game-winning touchdown.

Oklahoma had a much easier opening weekend, beating UTEP 51-0. That creates a pretty straightforward question for Michigan today: was Week 1 simply an ugly opener, or did it expose problems Oklahoma is considerably better equipped to exploit?

The noon window is crowded, too. Oregon visits Oklahoma State on ESPN, Arizona State faces Texas A&M on ABC and Penn State meets Temple on ESPN2. Basically, college football has removed the concept of easing into your Saturday.

Alabama Gets the First SEC Test

At 3:30 PM ET on ABC, No. 12 Alabama visits Kentucky in the first SEC conference game of the 2026 season.

Both teams opened with comfortable victories. Alabama beat East Carolina 48-10 behind quarterback Keelon Russell, while Kentucky began the Will Stein era with a 45-13 win over Youngstown State. Now Kentucky gets a much more useful measurement of where its rebuild stands.

The afternoon window also has Notre Dame's home opener against Rice on NBC, Arizona-BYU on FOX and Mississippi State-Minnesota on CBS. If you're attempting to watch all of this simultaneously, congratulations on your new career operating a sports bar.

Hallmark Is Ready for Fall

If football isn't happening in your house, Hallmark Channel premieres Falling Into Place at 8 PM ET, officially continuing its Fall Into Love movie lineup. Alvina August and Nathan Witte star as Kaia and James, childhood best friends who reconnect when Kaia returns home for a fall festival and their high-school reunion. The pair decide to finish the autumn bucket list they never completed when they were younger, which naturally gives them plenty of opportunities to discover that perhaps their friendship wasn't quite as uncomplicated as they remembered. There will be festivals. There will be leaves. There will almost certainly be knitwear. Hallmark knows what season it is.

Have I Got News for You Returns to CNN

After everything happening in the news right now, Roy Wood Jr., Amber Ruffin and Michael Ian Black should have absolutely no shortage of material.

Have I Got News for You begins Season 5 tonight at 9 PM ET/PT on CNN, with Wood returning as host and Ruffin and Black back as team captains. CNN's American adaptation of the long-running British panel show uses the week's headlines as the foundation for comedy, trivia and whatever ridiculous explanation the panelists can come up with for why any of this happened.

Episodes will also be available the following day through CNN's streaming platforms.

So Saturday gives us a top-five college-football showdown, Emmy winners, two original movies, a returning comedy series and enough football to keep the remote occupied until almost 2 AM.

The television season is waking up.
