‘Point Break’ Sequel Series Is Coming to AMC — Here’s What We Know

Two serious men stand back to back against a clear blue sky, one blond in a white tank, the other in a purple-and-black top.

More than three decades after Point Break sent Keanu Reeves undercover with Patrick Swayze and a crew of surfing bank robbers, AMC is preparing to head back into the water. AMC Studios and Alcon Entertainment are developing a television continuation of the 1991 action classic, and this isn't another attempt to simply remake the movie for a new generation.

The new Point Break series will instead expand the world established by director Kathryn Bigelow's original film. According to AMC, the story picks up 25 years after the movie's ending and centers on a dangerous new heist crew with connections to the infamous Ex-Presidents gang.

Fans of the original will remember the Ex-Presidents as the bank-robbing crew led by Swayze's Bodhi. Wearing masks of former U.S. presidents while carrying out their robberies, the group became the target of rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah, played by Reeves, who went undercover in Southern California's surfing community and quickly found himself drawn into Bodhi's adrenaline-fueled world.

Dave Kalstein, whose credits include Treadstone, Quantico and NCIS: Los Angeles, is writing and executive producing the television project. AMC Studios is developing the series alongside Alcon Entertainment, which was also behind the original Point Break.

And this one appears to be moving relatively quickly. AMC revealed that scripts for a potential first season are currently in development and said it expects production to begin in Australia later in 2026, with the series targeting a 2027 premiere. Still, it is worth noting that AMC continues to describe the project as being in development rather than announcing a formal series order.

There is also one interesting discrepancy surrounding exactly how much time has passed. When the project was initially reported, it was described as taking place 35 years after the original film. AMC's more recent official update now says the story begins 25 years after the movie's ending, so we'll stick with the network's latest description until we hear otherwise.

As for whether Reeves could return as Johnny Utah, don't get ahead of yourselves just yet. AMC has not announced Reeves or any other cast members for the project, and there has been no confirmation that Johnny Utah will be part of the new story.

That might ultimately be the biggest question hanging over the series. Connecting a new crew to the Ex-Presidents gives AMC a way to continue Point Break without simply recreating Bodhi and Utah's story, but when you're returning to a movie this closely associated with Reeves and Swayze, comparisons are inevitable.

For now, though, Point Break is officially back on AMC's radar, and if everything goes according to the network's current plans, we'll be riding this particular wave sometime in 2027.
