Apple TV Unveils ‘The Last First: Winter K2’ Trailer Ahead of October Premiere

One of the world’s most dangerous mountains takes center stage in Apple Original Films’ latest documentary. Apple has released the trailer for The Last First: Winter K2, a new film from director Amir Bar-Lev that heads to K2 for a story about ambition, survival and a mountaineering culture undergoing some major changes.

Premiering globally October 2 on Apple TV, the documentary focuses on a 2021 expedition involving Icelandic mountaineer John Snorri Sigurjónsson and Pakistani father-son team Ali and Sajid Sadpara. Their goal was enormous: become the first climbers to summit K2 during winter, when already dangerous conditions on the mountain become even more unforgiving.

More Than a Story About Reaching the Summit

What begins as a pursuit of mountaineering history becomes something considerably more complicated. As the climbers make their ascent, they find themselves sharing K2 with influencer climbers and accompanying film crews, paying commercial expedition clients and a Nepalese team determined to change a long-standing dynamic within the sport.

For years, Nepalese climbers have played crucial roles in helping Western mountaineers reach some of the world's most difficult summits, often without receiving the same recognition. The Last First: Winter K2 examines a moment when that relationship is beginning to shift, adding questions of class, caste, money and power to an expedition where every decision can already carry life-or-death consequences.

Bar-Lev takes viewers into K2's brutal conditions while looking beyond the familiar imagery of climbers battling ice, altitude and unpredictable weather. The documentary also examines the increasingly commercialized world surrounding extreme mountaineering and what happens when personal ambition, national pride, social media and business all arrive on the same mountain.

The Last First: Winter K2 is directed by Amir Bar-Lev, whose previous documentary work includes The Tillman Story and Long Strange Trip. Sean Richard, Sarah Tomson, John Battsek, Howard T. Owens and Ben Silverman serve as producers.

James Packer, Will Kane, Drew Buckley, Taylor Levin, Isabel San Vargas, Bar-Lev, Kerstin Emhoff and Ali Brown serve as executive producers. Propagate Content, Object Studios and Ventureland are among the production companies behind the film.

With its combination of an extraordinary expedition and a larger examination of who gets to pursue and receive credit for mountaineering history, The Last First: Winter K2 looks to have considerably more on its mind than simply reaching the top.
