The Tribeca Festival isn’t easing into its 25th anniversary, it’s kicking the doors open with music, legacy, and a live performance that feels tailor-made for New York. Organizers have officially announced that the 2026 festival will open June 3 with the world premiere of a new documentary directed by Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson, followed by a can’t-miss concert event.

The film, Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial VS That’s the Weight of the World), centers on the legendary Earth, Wind & Fire, diving into their cultural impact, creative legacy, and the vision of founder Maurice White. And because this is Tribeca, the experience doesn’t stop at the credits. The premiere will be followed by a live performance from Earth, Wind & Fire alongside

The Roots at the iconic Beacon Theatre.

That pairing alone would be enough to generate buzz, but the milestone anniversary adds extra weight. “Opening Night is always a magical moment! This year, as we celebrate 25 years of the Festival, it is especially meaningful,” said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of Tribeca. She reflected on the festival’s origins after 9/11, noting its mission to bring people together through storytelling and shared experiences, something this music-driven kickoff seems designed to deliver in full.

Tribeca has long blurred the line between film and live performance, and according to festival director Cara Cusumano, this year’s opener hits that sweet spot perfectly. “We are thrilled to welcome Questlove… showcasing the joy and community that great art manifests,” she said, adding that the combined screening and concert will be “a once-in-a-lifetime New York event.”

Questlove, whose previous documentary work has earned both critical acclaim and major awards, described the project as deeply personal. “The past two years of deep research and creative magic surrounding Earth, Wind & Fire have been nothing short of transformative,” he said. “They remain one of the most culturally significant bands in history, and this project finally illustrates exactly why their legacy is so vital.”

The choice feels especially fitting given Tribeca’s history with music icons, from David Bowie to Taylor Swift and its reputation for turning premieres into full-scale cultural moments. Earth, Wind & Fire themselves previously helped open the festival in 2017, making this return less of a booking and more of a homecoming.

Following the premiere and performance, the celebration continues with an after-party at Tavern on the Green, because if you’re marking 25 years of Tribeca, you don’t exactly call it an early night.

With tickets going on sale April 28 and anticipation already building, Tribeca’s Opening Night sets the tone for what promises to be a festival leaning heavily into its roots: bold storytelling, major talent, and unforgettable live experiences. If the goal is to remind audiences why Tribeca still matters after a quarter-century, this is a strong way to start.
