NBC Renews Law & Order: SVU for Season 28 in Record-Breaking Run

If there are two things certain in this life, it’s that death is coming for us all and Captain Olivia Benson will eventually find a reason to whisper-yell in an interrogation room. In news that surprises absolutely no one who enjoys watching bad guys get their comeuppance on a Tuesday night, NBC has officially greenlit Law & Order: SVU Season 28.

While other shows struggle to make it past the pilot phase, SVU is out here collecting decades like they’re Pokémon cards. This latest renewal ensures that the 2026-27 television season will be well-stocked with heinous crimes, questionable fashion choices from the 1-6 squad room, and enough legal drama to make you feel like you passed the Bar exam from your couch.

The Benson Era Continues (And We Aren't Mad About It)

Let’s be real: Mariska Hargitay isn’t just the star of the show; she is the show. As Law & Order: SVU enters its twenty-eighth year, Hargitay continues to break records as the longest-running live-action character in TV history. At this point, we’re fairly certain Olivia Benson has more frequent flyer miles at the NYPD than most actual police officers.

What makes the SVU Season 28 renewal actually interesting, besides the job security for the craft services team, is the creative direction under showrunner Michele Fazekas. The series has managed to pivot from the "ripped from the headlines" tropes of the early 2000s into something that feels slightly more grounded in modern social politics, even if the dialogue occasionally feels like it was written by someone who just discovered what a "meme" is.

Who’s Returning to the Squad?

While NBC is keeping the official cast list under wraps for another few weeks, the core team is expected to remain intact. We’re looking at more grumbling from Ice-T’s Fin Tutuola (who somehow looks younger every year), more legal gymnastics from Peter Scanavino’s Carisi, and the continued presence of Kelli Giddish’s Rollins, who seems to be the only person in the Law & Order universe allowed to leave and come back whenever she pleases.

The real question for Season 28 isn't if the show will be good, it’s a well-oiled machine at this point but rather how it will handle the absence of its sister show, Organized Crime. With Stabler’s spin-off officially heading to the great TV graveyard in the sky, SVU has the heavy lifting of keeping the franchise's emotional core alive.

Why SVU Stays on Top

You might wonder why a show that’s old enough to rent a car and have its own mid-life crisis is still getting renewed. The answer is simple: comfort food. Even when the subject matter is grim, there’s something deeply satisfying about watching a 42nd-minute confession followed by a "Guilty" verdict. In a landscape of streaming shows that get canceled after eight episodes, SVU is the reliable ex who always picks up the phone.

As we look toward the Law & Order: SVU Season 28 premiere, expect the usual mix of high-stakes courtroom battles and Benson giving a supportive nod to a victim while wearing an incredible coat.

No word yet on the flagship Law and Order and we now know that Organized Crime won't be returning. We are still waiting on word about Stumble, Hunting Party and Brilliant Minds.
