Well, R.J. Decker certainly knows how to leave us hanging! ABC's crime drama wrapped its second season Tuesday night with a murder mystery that turned into something far more personal, delivering a shocking betrayal and a cliffhanger that puts Mel's entire family in danger. After spending much of the season balancing unusual cases with the complicated relationships surrounding R.J., the series saved one of its darkest twists for last.

The Season 2 finale, “Before You Accuse Me,” shifts much of the emotional weight onto Detective Mel Abreu (Bevin Bru), whose past comes back to haunt her when R.J. (Scott Speedman) begins questioning a murder conviction she has believed in for a decade. What follows forces Mel to confront a terrible mistake, reconsider someone she trusted, and face a threat that no amount of police experience could have prepared her for.

One Case Changes Everything for Mel

Ten years ago, Mel's friend and fellow police officer Bobby Werner was murdered. Gabriel Romero confessed to the crime and was convicted, giving Mel every reason to believe the case had been solved. She has carried the loss ever since, maintaining a close relationship with Bobby's widow, Jessica, and their daughter, Danielle.

That certainty starts falling apart when Emi (Jaina Lee Ortiz) hires R.J. to reinvestigate the killing. Gabriel has recanted his confession, and Emi believes an innocent man has spent the last decade behind bars. Mel isn't interested in reopening old wounds, especially when doing so means questioning an investigation she helped build. Her frustration with R.J. creates tension between two people who have developed a strong working relationship, but R.J. refuses to ignore evidence simply because the truth might be uncomfortable.

The investigation raises troubling questions about the handling of evidence, including a weapon connected to Bobby's former partner, Flynn, and a hoodie used to implicate Gabriel. R.J. even begins wondering whether Mel crossed a line during the original investigation.

Mel admits she used questionable tactics while pursuing Gabriel, including posing as a gang member to question a potential witness, but she maintains that she never planted evidence. As the investigation continues, new fingerprints help establish that Gabriel was not Bobby's killer. And just like that, ten years of certainty come crashing down.

The Real Killer Was Hiding in Plain Sight

The biggest betrayal doesn't come from Gabriel or even someone in law enforcement. It comes from Jessica, the grieving widow Mel has supported for years. As R.J. and Mel piece together the evidence, they discover that Jessica has a troubling history involving marriages, suspicious deaths, and financial gain. The investigation points to her as the person responsible for Bobby's murder, with life insurance providing a possible motive.

It's an ugly revelation, particularly for Mel. She's spent a decade trying to honor Bobby's memory while remaining close to the family he left behind, never imagining that the woman she was helping could be responsible for his death.

The discovery also forces Mel to reckon with Gabriel's wrongful conviction. An innocent man lost ten years of his life, while the person responsible remained free and benefited from the sympathy surrounding Bobby's murder. Although the evidence points toward Jessica, authorities don't yet have enough to immediately charge her. Gabriel, meanwhile, finally has a path toward clearing his name.

For a moment, it seems like the case might end with some measure of justice. R.J. and Mel have uncovered the truth, their partnership has survived another difficult investigation, and Gabriel has a chance to reclaim the life he lost. Unfortunately, Jessica has other plans.

That Cliffhanger Was Personal

Once allegations about Jessica surface, child protective services becomes involved, and Danielle is placed in the emergency custody of her grandparents. Jessica is furious, and instead of taking responsibility for what she's done, she decides Mel should experience the same fear and heartbreak. The final moments take a terrifying turn when Jessica calls Mel and makes it clear that losing Danielle has pushed her toward revenge.

Jessica is watching Mel's wife, Catherine (Adelaide Clemens), and their daughter, Sofia (Mélodie Rose Romano), outside their home. With R.J. and Mel too far away to intervene immediately, the threat becomes painfully real. Then the episode ends. No rescue. No confirmation that Catherine and Sofia are safe. Just the possibility that Jessica is about to destroy another family, all because Mel helped expose the truth. It's a brutal ending for a series that has generally found room for humor even during its most unusual murder investigations. This time, there isn't much to laugh about.

Where Does R.J. Go From Here?

The finale creates an especially complicated situation because Catherine isn't only Mel's wife. She's also R.J.'s ex-wife, and Sofia is someone he considers family. Whatever Jessica intends to do, the consequences will reach far beyond Mel. It's also a significant turning point for Mel herself. She's usually one of the more grounded people in R.J.'s chaotic world, but this case has stripped away much of the confidence she had in her own judgment. Discovering that she helped send the wrong man to prison was devastating enough. Learning that Jessica could now hurt her family takes that devastation to another level.

There's also unfinished business elsewhere in R.J.'s life. His relationship with Emi has become increasingly complicated, while his growing connection with Trudy (Shantel VanSanten) presents another possibility for his romantic future. The finale leaves plenty of personal threads unresolved alongside its much more urgent family crisis. But romance can wait. Right now, somebody needs to get to Catherine and Sofia!

Will R.J. Decker Return for Season 3?

As of October 28, 2026, ABC has not announced whether R.J. Decker will return for a third season. That uncertainty makes the cliffhanger even more frustrating because the finale leaves one of the show's most important families facing immediate danger. There is an encouraging sign in the show's audience performance. According to ABC, the Season 2 premiere attracted 9.61 million cross-platform viewers over seven days, including streaming and linear encore viewing. That's a substantial audience for a series still building its place on the network's schedule.

Showrunner Rob Doherty has also discussed possible directions for a third season, although those creative plans are not confirmation of a renewal. The seven-episode second season may have been brief, but it delivered a finale with genuine consequences. More importantly, it reminded us that beneath R.J.'s unconventional investigative methods and the show's lighter moments are characters with relationships worth investing in.

Now we're left with a murder solved, a decade of lies exposed, and two people potentially paying the price for someone else's crimes. R.J. Decker has one more mystery to solve, and it's a big one: Will Mel and R.J. get the chance to save their family?

R.J. Decker Seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on Hulu.
