‘Game of Thrones’ Star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau to Lead MGM+ Horror Series ‘The Black Tapes’

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is trading Westeros for something considerably more supernatural. The Game of Thrones star is set to headline The Black Tapes, a new eight-episode horror investigation series coming to MGM+.
Based on the popular podcast of the same name, the series will follow a psychiatrist determined to explain away paranormal phenomena. Unfortunately for him, the mysteries he's investigating might be a little more real than he'd like to believe.
What Is The Black Tapes About?
Coster-Waldau will portray Dr. Richard Strand, a brilliant but complicated psychiatrist with a mysterious past. Strand teams up with scientist Alex Regan to investigate strange cases involving hauntings, possessions, disappearances, and unsettling legends.
Their goal is to expose supposedly supernatural events as something that can be explained through science and logic. But as they dig deeper into their collection of mysterious cases, their investigation takes them into a hidden occult world.
And things only get darker from there. The pair eventually uncover a centuries-old conspiracy with potentially apocalyptic consequences, turning what begins as a search for rational explanations into something far more dangerous.
From Hit Podcast to Television
The Black Tapes originated as a fictional investigative podcast created by Terry Miles and Paul Bae. Debuting in 2015, the series built a dedicated following through its documentary-style storytelling, unsettling mysteries, and gradually expanding mythology.
The television adaptation will bring that premise to a larger visual stage, with both podcast creators involved as writers and executive producers. John Rogers and Kearie Peak are among the creative forces behind the project, which is expected to begin filming in Vancouver in January 2027.
For Coster-Waldau, the series marks another intriguing genre role following his portrayal of Jaime Lannister on HBO's Game of Thrones. This time, however, the actor will face mysteries that require considerably more than a sword to solve.
MGM+ has not announced a premiere date, and additional cast members have yet to be revealed.
With its combination of psychological mystery, supernatural horror, and a conspiracy that reaches far beyond a few haunted houses, The Black Tapes could be an intriguing addition to the streamer's growing genre lineup.
The Black Tapes is in development for MGM+, with production scheduled to begin in January 2027.
