Nicholas Alexander Chavez Joins Will Smith in Amazon MGM Action Thriller ‘Supermax’

Nicholas Alexander Chavez's post-General Hospital career continues to move full speed ahead.

The former Spencer Cassadine has joined Will Smith in Supermax, a new action thriller from Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax. Chavez joins the project alongside newly announced cast members Anford and Erika Ringor, with production now underway in New South Wales, Australia.

Details about Chavez's character are being kept under wraps, so there's no telling yet which side of the prison walls he'll find himself on. What we do know is that Supermax puts him in another high-profile project as he continues building a career well beyond Port Charles.

What Is ‘Supermax’ About?

Directed by David Gordon Green, Supermax follows two FBI agents investigating a seemingly impossible murder inside a maximum-security prison.

Smith and AnnaSophia Robb play the agents at the center of the story, while the growing ensemble also includes Jason Clarke and Jaafar Jackson, who recently starred as his uncle Michael Jackson in the blockbuster biopic Michael. David Weil and David J. Rosen wrote the screenplay, with Smith also producing through Westbrook Studios alongside Adam Fishbach. The Picture Company's Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman are also producing. Amazon MGM will eventually release the film on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories, although a premiere date has not yet been announced.

Nicholas Alexander Chavez Keeps Building His Post-‘General Hospital’ Career

Soap fans obviously know Chavez best as Spencer Cassadine, the role he originated on General Hospital in 2021. His performance quickly made Spencer one of the show's most prominent younger characters and earned Chavez the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Performer in a Drama Series in 2022.

But his career took a significant turn after leaving Port Charles. Chavez landed the role of Lyle Menendez in Ryan Murphy's Netflix anthology Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, putting him in front of an entirely new audience. He followed that by reuniting with Murphy for FX's Grotesquerie, where he played Father Charlie Mayhew.

His upcoming slate continues to expand. Chavez recently wrapped the psychological thriller The Technique, where he stars alongside Emma Roberts, Ben Platt and Noomi Rapace. Now Supermax puts him into a major studio action thriller opposite one of Hollywood's most recognizable stars.

From Port Charles to Hollywood

For longtime General Hospital viewers, watching Chavez's career after Spencer has been particularly interesting because he didn't simply move from one television series to another. In a relatively short period, he's jumped from daytime television to a Netflix true-crime phenomenon, an FX horror series and now feature films.

Of course, Spencer Cassadine remains very much alive in the minds of GH fans. The character was presumed dead after falling overboard during a confrontation with Esme Prince in January 2024, leaving the door cracked open for the kind of miraculous return daytime television has perfected.

Whether Chavez ever walks back through that door is another question entirely, and Supermax certainly isn't evidence one way or another. For now, his next stop is Australia, where production on the action thriller is officially underway.

And considering how quickly Chavez's résumé has expanded since leaving Port Charles, Supermax probably won't be the last major project soap fans see his name attached to.
