MasterChef Season 16 Episode 16 Recap: Two Cooks Eliminated as the Final 3 Are Revealed

The MasterChef: Global Gauntlet finale is officially set, but getting there required the remaining home cooks to survive one of the toughest nights of the season. Wednesday's semifinal began with Heidi Muston, Jake Kelley, Peter Egede, Basia Newman and Julia Cili still fighting for the title, and by the end of the episode, two cooks had turned in their aprons while the final three secured their places in the Season 16 finale.

The semifinal also brought a twist to one of MasterChef's familiar challenges. Instead of simply attempting to keep pace with Gordon Ramsay, the cooks first had to survive "Keeping Up With Tiffany," featuring Tiffany Derry. And because apparently keeping up with one acclaimed chef wasn't stressful enough, Gordon was waiting for the contestants who survived.

Jake Gets a Major Semifinal Advantage

Jake entered the semifinal in a very different position from everyone else. Thanks to his performance in the previous challenge, he earned an advantage that allowed him to skip Tiffany's round entirely and move directly into the second stage of the semifinal.

That left Heidi, Peter, Basia and Julia attempting to recreate Tiffany's pan-roasted halibut while simultaneously following her instructions and matching her pace in the kitchen. It's the kind of challenge that looks difficult enough when you're watching from the couch, let alone when a spot in the MasterChef finale is hanging in the balance.

Heidi quickly established herself as one of the strongest cooks of the round, delivering the recreation that came closest to Tiffany's original dish. Basia had a much more difficult time, with undercooked halibut and problems with her fonio ultimately putting her in danger. At this stage of the competition, there was almost no room left for mistakes, and Basia became the first contestant eliminated from the semifinal.

With Basia gone, Heidi, Peter and Julia moved forward and Jake returned to the kitchen. Four cooks remained, but only three spots were waiting for them in the finale.

Gordon Ramsay Turns Up the Pressure

For the second round, the remaining contestants faced the version of the challenge MasterChef viewers know very well: keeping up with Gordon Ramsay. Gordon demonstrated an herb-crusted rack of lamb accompanied by roasted eggplant purée, pea fricassée, pickled turnips and mint sauce, with the cooks expected to recreate the dish while staying on pace with him.

There wasn't one completely flawless plate that made the final decision obvious. Heidi, Jake, Peter and Julia each had strengths and weaknesses in their dishes, meaning the judges had plenty to consider before deciding which three cooks deserved to compete for the title.

Heidi was announced as the first finalist, capping an impressive semifinal performance after she had already produced the strongest recreation during Tiffany's challenge. Jake was named the second finalist, officially proving that the advantage he earned earlier in the night wasn't the only thing keeping him in the competition.

That left Peter and Julia waiting for the final decision. Only one of them could claim the third spot, and ultimately, the judges chose Peter to advance. Julia's run came to an end just one challenge short of the finale, while Peter joined Heidi and Jake in the final three.

The MasterChef Final 3 Are Set

After weeks of challenges, eliminations and more Gordon Ramsay pressure than most of us would voluntarily sign up for, MasterChef: Global Gauntlet is down to Heidi Muston, Jake Kelley and Peter Egede. All three have taken different paths through the competition, making the final showdown particularly interesting.

Heidi leaves the semifinal with plenty of momentum after excelling in Tiffany's challenge and then surviving Gordon's round. Jake took full advantage of the opportunity he earned by skipping the first challenge, but still had to prove himself when he returned to the kitchen. Peter, meanwhile, survived the most nerve-racking position of the night by securing the very last spot in the finale over Julia.

The season's international format also remains represented in the final three. Heidi represents South Africa and Team Africa, Peter represents Nigeria and Team Africa, while Jake represents Mexico and Team Americas. After a season built around cooks bringing different culinary backgrounds into the MasterChef kitchen, those influences will now meet one final time with the title on the line.

Basia and Julia may have fallen just short of the finale, but reaching the Top 5 in this competition is nothing to shrug at. Both survived long enough to make it to semifinal night, only to encounter two demanding challenges at the worst possible time.

Now the field has officially been narrowed from five to three, and there's only one question left: Which finalist will impress Gordon Ramsay and the judges enough to become the next MasterChef winner?

Heidi, Jake and Peter will compete for the MasterChef trophy and the $250,000 grand prize when MasterChef: Global Gauntlet returns for its Season 16 finale on FOX.
