The live-action series, which starred Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, initially looked like the rare Disney+ superhero venture with actual staying power. Now, the project joins a growing list of casualties as Marvel Studios tightens its belt and re-evaluates its streaming strategy.
For a minute there, it felt like Simon Williams had pulled off the ultimate Hollywood magic trick. The eight-episode debut season dropped in January to genuinely strong reviews. The series was praised for its Hollywood-satire angle, Abdul-Mateen’s charismatic performance and the welcome return of Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery. The show even secured an Emmy nomination. Naturally, when Disney renewed the series for Season 2, it felt like a massive victory.
Then the reality of the streaming landscape set in. Reports indicate that a writers' room for the second season was never formally opened and all attached writers have now been released. According to showrunner Andrew Guest, the series barely survived its initial development phase after testing poorly in early screenings. While behind-the-scenes adjustments saved the first season, that internal hesitation clearly lingered.
This cancellation also highlights Marvel's strict unwritten rule: live-action shows are almost always a one-and-done deal. Aside from Loki, the studio routinely treats its Disney+ lineup from WandaVision to Moon Knight as limited series. Wonder Man was the anomaly and Disney’s sudden about-face proves the studio is retreating to its comfort zone.
So, what does this mean for the future of Simon Williams? While the standalone show is dead, Marvel rarely lets a powered character vanish entirely. We will likely see Abdul-Mateen pop up in future crossover films or secondary television projects. For now, though, the dream of a Hollywood-centric Marvel comedy is officially over.
