Alicia Silverstone Returns as Cher in Clueless Sequel Series at Paramount+

Well, somebody cue up "Rollin' with the Homies" because Cher Horowitz is officially making her way back to Beverly Hills.

Paramount+ has handed out a greenlight to a Clueless sequel event series, with Alicia Silverstone reprising her iconic role as everyone's favorite fashion-forward matchmaker, Cher Horowitz. And before anyone starts panicking about another unnecessary reboot, take a breath. This one has a few things going for it that actually have us cautiously optimistic.

For starters, Silverstone isn't just returning in front of the camera. She's also executive producing alongside Clueless writer and director Amy Heckerling, while The O.C. and Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are writing and executive producing with Jordan Weiss (Dollface, Freakier Friday). That's a lineup that knows a thing or two about wealthy teenagers making questionable life choices.

The new series picks up 30 years after the original film and finds Cher in a completely different stage of life. She's built a successful career, figured out adulthood, and mastered motherhood...or so she thought. Now she's raising a teenage daughter, and suddenly all that confidence goes right out the designer closet. Parenting a high schooler has left Cher feeling "clueless" all over again.

Honestly? That's a premise with way more potential than trying to recreate the original movie beat for beat.

One of the biggest mistakes legacy sequels make is pretending their characters haven't grown. This series appears to be doing the opposite. Cher isn't the popular teenager navigating Beverly Hills anymore. She's the mom trying to understand a new generation that's probably explaining TikTok trends to her while borrowing clothes she swore she'd never let anyone touch. We can already picture the eye rolls.

Production is slated to begin in Los Angeles in 2027, which feels like exactly where this series belongs. Beverly Hills has always been as much a character as Cher herself, so filming in L.A. helps preserve some of the original film's DNA instead of trying to fake it somewhere else.

Timing also works in the show's favor. Clueless recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, reunited much of its original cast at the Academy Museum, and earned a place in the National Film Registry through the Library of Congress. That's not just nostalgia talking, that's recognition that the film remains one of the defining teen comedies of the '90s.

Of course, longtime fans have every reason to be skeptical. Legacy revivals are always a gamble. For every revival that finds a fresh angle, there's another that reminds us maybe some things should've stayed in the past. Whew.

Still, Paramount+ seems to understand that the secret ingredient isn't simply bringing Cher back. It's giving her a new chapter that makes sense. Watching the ultimate Beverly Hills trendsetter navigate modern parenting sounds a lot more interesting than pretending she's still roaming the halls of Bronson Alcott High with Dionne and Tai.

No premiere date has been announced yet, so yes, we're going to be waiting awhile. But with Alicia Silverstone back as Cher, Amy Heckerling involved behind the scenes, and a creative team that knows how to write addictive teen drama, this is one Paramount+ project that's already landed on our watchlist.
