Is Vivica A. Fox Leaving ‘The Young and the Restless’ Again? Her Latest Goodbye Has Fans Talking

Woman in a green blazer talks to a bald man in a doorway, with framed art and warm indoor decor behind them.

We have been down this road with Vivica A. Fox before, so nobody start packing Stephanie Simmons’ bags just yet. Still, the actress’ latest posts from The Young and the Restless set certainly look like a goodbye — at least for now.

Fox shared a pair of Instagram Stories that immediately caught our attention. In one, the actress is sitting in the makeup room holding a beautiful bouquet of flowers while thanking members of the Y&R glam team. She wrote, “Much luv to da fabulous @youngandrestlesscbs glamsquad guys,” before thanking the team for her flowers and adding the hashtag #SoapLife.

It was her next Story, however, that really raised some eyebrows. Alongside a photo with Y&R stars Bryton James, Kate Linder and Sean Dominic, Fox thanked her castmates for their support before telling her Young and the Restless family, “Until next time.”

Now, that certainly sounds like Fox has wrapped her latest stretch of filming as Dr. Stephanie Simmons. But those final three words are doing a lot of work here. “Until next time” is very different from “goodbye forever,” and Fox has not announced that she is permanently leaving the CBS soap.

We’ve Already Had One Vivica A. Fox Exit Fake-Out

There is good reason to be careful about declaring Stephanie gone. Fox returned to The Young and the Restless in April, more than 30 years after she originally portrayed Stephanie in 1994 and 1995. Her comeback quickly became much more than a nostalgic guest appearance, with Stephanie revealed to be Holden Novak’s mother and Malcolm Winters’ former lover.

When Stephanie subsequently left Genoa City to help Malcolm through his medical treatment, it initially looked as though Fox's return had already reached its conclusion. Fox soon cleared things up, however, saying Stephanie had a “bright future” on The Young and the Restless and explaining that producers and writers wanted to do more with the character.

And more they did. Stephanie returned and continued appearing throughout the spring and summer, with her story eventually bringing her into Nate Hastings’ orbit. Recent episodes have even hinted at chemistry between Stephanie and Nate as she encourages him toward a possible return to medicine.

So, Is Stephanie Simmons Really Leaving Y&R?

For now, the safest answer is it looks like Fox has finished filming her current run, but we wouldn't call this a permanent exit. Fox didn't say Stephanie's story was over, and “until next time” almost sounds like she's deliberately leaving the door open.

There is also the soap opera production schedule to consider. What Fox is doing at the studio now and what viewers are currently seeing on television aren't happening simultaneously, meaning Stephanie could remain on-screen in already-filmed episodes even if Fox has wrapped production for the moment.

And frankly, after Y&R brought Fox back after more than three decades and then expanded Stephanie's role beyond the initial return story, permanently closing the door now would feel premature. Stephanie suddenly has family connections, history and even the possibility of romance to keep her tied to Genoa City.

So yes, those flowers and that “until next time” message certainly feel like a wrap celebration. But until Fox or The Young and the Restless confirms something more definitive, we're treating this as goodbye for now, not goodbye forever.
