HBO is clearly feeling confident about its newest comedy duo. The network has officially granted Season two renewals to The Chair Company and I Love LA, two shows that arrived this fall and immediately started stirring up chatter. It is not often that two freshman comedies strike the right note at the same time, but HBO seems convinced these quirky newcomers have the kind of staying power that keeps viewers glued to the screen.
HBO comedy chief Amy Gravitt credited the strong audience response, saying the network is thrilled to keep working with the creative teams behind both series. Translation HBO sees potential and is ready for more offbeat chaos from these rising hits.
The Chair Company follows Tim Robinson as Ron, a well meaning dad who becomes convinced that his embarrassing workplace tumble is evidence of something far more sinister. Before long he is spiraling through conspiracies and crossing paths with some spectacularly odd characters. Robinson who cocreated the series with longtime collaborator Zach Kanin brings his signature brand of awkward comedy meltdown energy, and viewers have clearly been rewarding the show for leaning all the way into its weirdness.
On the other end of the comedy spectrum but just as chaotic is I Love LA which comes from creator and star Rachel Sennott. She plays Maia a struggling PR rep who gets the career glow up of her dreams when her influencer best friend Tallulah played by Odessa Azion hires her as manager. Their dynamic is messy aspirational and extremely LA in all the best and worst ways. With Josh Hutcherson Jordan Firstman and True Whitaker rounding out the cast the show blends industry satire with classic friendship drama which explains why it has already found a devoted fan base.
The renewals signal that HBO is committed to embracing bold creator driven comedy and giving these two series room to grow. Fans of Robinsons frantic unraveling and Sennotts sun soaked PR circus can now breathe easy knowing more episodes are on the way. Expect more absurdity more ambition and plenty of reasons to keep these shows at the top of your watchlist as they head into Season two.
