HBO has officially renewed House of the Dragon for a fourth season, extending its flagship Game of Thrones prequel series through 2028. The announcement was made by Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max, during the network’s presentation in New York City. Season three is set to debut this summer, while season four is scheduled for release in 2028.

The renewal arrives as work continues behind the scenes. Showrunner Ryan Condal is currently writing season four. Condal has previously stated that he envisioned the series concluding after four seasons, but the network did not confirm an end point. According to sources, the final decision will be made after season four is completed, leaving the ultimate length of the series open for now.

House of the Dragon is based on George R. R. Martin’s book Fire and Blood and is set two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones. The story centers on House Targaryen during one of the most turbulent and consequential periods in its history. The eight episode second season, which wrapped in August 2024, picked up immediately after the death of Lucerys Velaryon, the son of Rhaenyra Targaryen. The season followed the rapid escalation of the Targaryen conflict, moving the story from uneasy tension into the beginning of the Dance of the Dragons civil war.

Season three continues that trajectory with a large returning cast that includes Matt Smith, Emma D Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, Matthew Needham, James Norton, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin and Abubakar Salim.

House of the Dragon is co created and executive produced by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal, who serves as showrunner. Sara Hess, Melissa Bernstein, Kevin de la Noy, Vince Gerardis, David Hancock and Philippa Goslett also executive produce.

With the fourth season now officially moving forward, HBO continues to expand its presence in the world of Westeros as the Targaryen saga enters its next chapter.
