HBO has officially renewed Task for a second season and the internet can finally unclench. The crime drama that sneaked onto the fall schedule and then sunk its claws into viewers is coming back with more emotional turmoil more tense interrogations and more Mark Ruffalo doing his best tortured federal agent face. The news arrives after the show became one of the strongest performing freshmen dramas in the network lineup a surprise to absolutely no one who watched the finale and said out loud "Well they better not stop there."
Task follows Ruffalo as FBI agent Tom Brandis whose investigations in the working class corners of Philadelphia turned the first season into a gripping mix of family trauma community tension and violent crime. It was a rough ride but the good kind the kind that rewards you for paying attention and lets you feel clever for catching a clue right before the show slaps you with five more. Viewers responded and HBO of course noticed.
Season two is shaping up to be a fascinating creative puzzle since several major season one characters met very final endings. Fans expecting the same ensemble may want to brace themselves. Still creator Brad Ingelsby has made it clear that he sees Task as an ongoing story with returning characters recurring emotional arcs and a continued focus on the raw personal stakes that made season one so compelling. Expect more Philly grit more real world texture and plenty of scenes where Ruffalo stares out a car window while contemplating justice and life choices.
This renewal feels like the most sensible decision HBO has made in ages. Task is prestige storytelling without the stuffy tone that usually weighs these dramas down. It is grounded but pulpy serious but never dreary and smart without acting like it deserves a medal. Season two has the chance to expand the world raise the stakes and push deeper into the messy lives that made the show resonate so strongly.
Task is back and that sound you hear is The TV Cave sharpening its recap pencils. Bring on the next investigation HBO. We are ready.
