After more than two decades of playing one of television's most famous doctors, Ellen Pompeo is staying in the medical field — but she's changing jobs and adding a murder mystery.
The Grey's Anatomy star is attached to headline and executive produce Not a Sound, a new drama currently in development at Hulu. Based on Heather Gudenkauf's 2017 novel of the same name, the project will put Pompeo at the center of a mystery that sounds very different from anything Meredith Grey has encountered at Grey Sloan Memorial.
And considering Pompeo's increasingly busy relationship with Hulu, Meredith may have to start wondering whether she's being cheated on.
What Is ‘Not a Sound’ About?
Pompeo will star as Amelia Winn, a disgraced emergency room nurse whose life is changed after a devastating hit-and-run causes her to lose her hearing. While attempting to rebuild her life, Amelia and her service dog discover the murdered body of one of her former colleagues.
The discovery pulls her into a dangerous mystery that could ultimately be connected to her own past. As Amelia searches for answers about the murder, she may also finally uncover the truth about the accident that caused her hearing loss and turned her life upside down.
So yes, Pompeo is returning to the medical world, but don't expect Grey's Anatomy 2.0. A murder, a mysterious hit-and-run and a protagonist trying to uncover what really happened to her sounds much closer to a psychological mystery than another hospital drama.
Not a Sound is based on Gudenkauf's novel, which was published in 2017. The television adaptation is being written by Matthew Tinker and Annakate Chappell, who previously worked together on ABC's Big Sky.
Ellen Pompeo Is Finally Teaming Up With David E. Kelley
There's also a fun piece of television history behind the project. Not a Sound comes from David E. Kelley Productions, marking a long-awaited professional crossover between Kelley and Pompeo. Back in March 2005, Kelley's Boston Legal finished its first season in ABC's Sunday 10 p.m. time slot. One week later, a little medical drama called Grey's Anatomy premiered in that same slot with Pompeo leading the cast as Meredith Grey.
More than 21 years later, they're finally working on the same project. Kelley will executive produce Not a Sound alongside Tinker, Chappell, Pompeo and Laura Holstein. Azazel Jacobs, whose credits include the 2024 Netflix film His Three Daughters, is attached to direct and executive produce. 20th Television is the studio.
Hulu and Ellen Pompeo Are Getting Pretty Serious
Not a Sound is also the latest sign that Pompeo's post-Grey's career isn't really "post-Grey's" at all. Instead, she seems perfectly happy keeping Meredith Grey around while simultaneously building a second television home at Hulu.
Pompeo recently starred in the first installment of Hulu's Good American Family, portraying Kristine Barnett opposite Mark Duplass and Imogen Faith Reid. The series has since been renewed for a second season and converted into an anthology, with Pompeo remaining aboard as an executive producer rather than returning as Kristine.
She is also set to star opposite Jodie Whittaker in the Hulu dramedy pilot Chicks. That project follows estranged half-sisters Chickie and Doreen, who inherit their late father's legacy of small-time crime and begin pulling off increasingly ambitious cons together. Pompeo will executive produce that project as well.
Add Not a Sound to the list, and Hulu apparently looked at Ellen Pompeo's reduced Grey's Anatomy schedule and said, "We can fix that."
But Meredith Grey Isn't Going Anywhere Just Yet
Despite all those new projects, Pompeo hasn't completely left the role that made her a television fixture. Grey's Anatomy is heading into Season 23, with Pompeo continuing to appear as Meredith while also serving as an executive producer.
Her onscreen presence has been reduced considerably from the days when Meredith was at the center of nearly every storyline, allowing Pompeo to pursue projects outside the ABC medical drama without requiring Grey's to say goodbye to its original leading lady.
She'll also remain connected to the Grey's Anatomy universe behind the scenes. Pompeo is an executive producer on the upcoming franchise spinoff set in West Texas, which is expected to premiere during the 2026-27 television season.
As for Not a Sound, viewers shouldn't start marking premiere dates on the calendar just yet. The project is currently in development, meaning Hulu has not formally ordered it to series and no production or release date has been announced.
Still, Pompeo playing a nurse caught up in a murder mystery alongside her service dog? Hulu, you have our attention.
