Doc Season 2 Episode 20 Recap: Michael Takes Charge as Tensions Rise

The hallways of Westside Hospital are usually buzzing with medical miracles and questionable ethics, but Season 2, Episode 20, titled "Big Chair," tried to pivot toward a "new era." With Michael Hamda officially stepping into his "step-down" position as Chief of Surgery, the episode promised a fresh start. But in true medical drama fashion, the transition was about as smooth as a botched intubation.

Michael’s Open Door Policy (and a Side of PTSD)

Michael kicked things off with the classic "I’m one of you" leadership speech. He’s back to practicing medicine and wants everyone to know his door is always open, an invitation that usually results in nothing but headaches for TV hospital chiefs. In a move that felt a bit like micromanaging under the guise of mentorship, he tasked the new co-chiefs of residents, Amy and Sonya, with shadowing Jake. The goal? Soak up all his wisdom before he vanishes for his pediatric fellowship.

However, the "Big Chair" isn't just a title; it's a magnet for trouble. While managing the staff, Michael found himself performing CPR on young Walter, a patient of Gina and TJ’s. The moment wasn't just a medical emergency; it was a traumatic trip down memory lane, forcing Michael to relive the day his and Amy’s son died. It was a heavy beat in an episode that otherwise felt like it was spinning its wheels.

The Battle of the Egos: Amy vs. Richard

The medical meat of the episode involved Joan Ridley being rushed to the ER after a coughing fit at home. Naturally, Richard was the doctor in charge, which meant Amy was hovering like a helicopter parent with a medical degree.

What followed was a dizzying game of "Who’s the Smarter Doctor?" Amy ran extra tests, suspected leukemia, and clashed with Richard at every turn. Joan’s condition spiraled into seizures, and while her son was ready to blindly follow Amy's lead, Richard pointed out that Amy’s initial treatment plan might have actually killed her. They were both right, then both wrong, until they finally realized Joan had picked up a parasite from her time overseas.

Between the medical back-and-forth, we got some sentimental flashbacks of a young Amy losing her mother to a heart attack, which served as the origin story for her friendship with Joan. It was sweet, sure, but mostly it felt like padding for a diagnosis that took way too many commercial breaks to solve.

Adoptions, Allegations, and Awkward Exes

Elsewhere, the personal drama was arguably more interesting than the medicine. Gina, after seeing Walter’s condition worsen, decided she wanted to adopt him. It’s a noble sentiment, though one wonders how her wife will react.

Meanwhile, Sonya stepped up for Nurse Liz. While the hospital seems content to let Richard slide back into his old life, Liz isn't forgetting his abuse of power. It was a necessary reality check in an episode that tried to paint Richard as a sympathetic protagonist.

On the romance front, the circle of Westside romances continues. Sonya told Jake she’s with TJ, Jake immediately told Amy, and everyone seems surprisingly fine with it. Jake had his own distraction with a "family emergency" involving his daughter getting into a fight at school, leading to a flirty moment with Rachel. By the end of the hour, Jake and Amy patched things up and walked out together, leaving Michael to do what he does best: pine from a distance.

The Verdict

Despite the high stakes and tragic flashbacks, "Big Chair" felt surprisingly sluggish. It checked the boxes for a penultimate episode but lacked the urgency you’d expect leading into a two-hour finale. It was a lot of medical guesswork and musical chairs with the staff's love lives.

Do you think Gina's wife will actually agree to the adoption, or is that just more finale drama waiting to happen?
