The freshman season of Fox’s Memory of a Killer has been a slow-burn descent into the moral gutter, and the Season 1 finale, "Exposed," finally pulled the trigger. We’ve reached the ultimate showdown we’ve been white-knuckling toward: the hitman versus the Fed. Or, more accurately, the murderer who kills "bad people" versus the grieving mother who’s lost her mind.
If you’ve been following our coverage here at The TV Cave, you know I’ve been wrestling with the central conceit of this show. Who exactly are we supposed to be rooting for? In "Exposed," that question gets shoved in our faces with all the subtlety of a sniper rifle’s red dot.
The Moral Quagmire: Tights vs. Trench Coats
Let’s be real, Angelo Doyle is a professional killer. Sure, he has a code, and sure, he’s played by Patrick Dempsey, which makes it very easy to forgive a multitude of sins. But at the end of the day, he’s not a caped crusader. If Angelo were wearing neon spandex and had a tragic origin story involving a radioactive spider, I’d probably feel better about his body count. Instead, he’s a guy in a nice jacket with a silencer.
On the other side of the alley, we have FBI Agent Linda Grant, also known as the elusive "Ferryman." She’s a mother consumed by the grief of her son’s death (a death, mind you, caused by Angelo). I get the motivation. Justice is a hell of a drug. But stalking Angelo’s family and popping the innocent people in his orbit? That’s not "justice"; that’s just being a very well-funded vigilante with a badge. I walked into this finale completely torn, and I left feeling like everyone probably needs a very long stay in a high-security facility.
Police Procedural or "Take Your Daughter to Work" Day?
The episode kicks off at the precinct, where the standard of "professionalism" is at an all-time low. Dave, who is officially the world’s worst cop, decides to hand over sensitive police evidence to Angelo like he’s sharing a Netflix password. He proves Hancock killed his wife on purpose, which is great, but Dave, buddy, you’re a detective, not a concierge for a hitman.
Then there’s the awkward "big man" talk. Jeff is back, and he manages to corner Dave to let him know that Maria chose him and Dave needs to back off. It felt like a high school locker room dispute, only with more loaded firearms nearby. Speaking of Maria, she’s still playing the "suspicious daughter" role, but her radar is severely glitchy. She asks Angelo how he’s doing after the Hancock situation, but she never thinks to ask, "Hey, dad, why do you have the tactical proficiency of a Tier 1 operator and know how to operate a silencer?" She’s suspicious, sure, but she’s missing the giant, hitman-shaped elephant in the room.
The Setup and the Sting
The tension ramps up when Nicky, bless her heart, finally answers Angelo’s call. Despite almost making it out of town, she decides to stay and help set up Grant. If this were a horror movie, she’d be the one investigating the noise in the basement. It was a bad move.
Angelo and Joe try to use Nicky as bait to track Grant, but Grant is three steps ahead. She never even gets out of the car. It’s a total setup, and Nicky pays the ultimate price. Angelo manages to drop the hitman Grant sent, and Joe gets the tracker on her car, but the cost of doing business is getting way too high.
Shootouts, Snipers, and a Side of Labor Pains
The climax is pure Memory of a Killer brand absurdity. Angelo has Grant in his crosshairs while she’s saying goodbye to her family. It’s a moment where he could end it, but the show gives us a classic warehouse meet-up instead. To add a layer of "because of course," Maria’s water breaks right as the final confrontation is about to go down. Nothing says high-stakes thriller like balancing a shootout with a birth plan.
Joe, ignoring the direct order Angelo has given him, shows up for backup. He heard everything and now knows Angelo's secret. It turns into a lead-filled frenzy. Grant didn't come alone, and in the ensuing skirmish, Joe takes a bullet. Angelo manages to tag Grant’s backup and hits her in the shoulder before shooting out her tires as she tries to flee.
Grant’s final words?
"You think this is over? Your nightmare’s just beginning."
Classic villain monologue material. Angelo doesn't wait for the sequel; he finishes her right there.

The Aftermath
By the grace of the TV gods, Joe survives, ending up in the hospital with Dutch. Dutch, playing the weary mentor, tells Angelo it’s time to retire. They’re getting old, the business is getting messy.
Angelo gets the text: Liam is born. But the victory is short-lived. In a sad scene at the hospital, the nurse asks for the name of his daughter. Angelo’s brain stalls. He can’t remember. He causes a scene, security is called, and only Jeff’s arrival saves him from being tossed out of the hospital where his newborn grandson is resting.
Later, over a meal, Dutch asks about this mysterious daughter that Joe let slip. Angelo lies, claiming Grant had a daughter-in-law. Dutch doesn't look like he’s buying what Angelo is selling.
Season 2: The Truth Comes Knocking
The episode ends on a cliffhanger that virtually demands a Season 2. Maria gets a final "gift" from the late Linda Grant: a folder containing every scrap of evidence Grant had on Angelo’s true identity.
While Angelo is at his secret apartment, trying to use a post-it note to remember his own grandson’s name, Maria shows up. She has the folder. She has the questions. And this time, "I was just at the office late" isn't going to cut it. Why didn't he check the peephole and not answer the door?
"Exposed" was a powerhouse finale that successfully blew up the status quo. The Ferryman is dead, but the ghost of her investigation is about to wreck Angelo’s domestic bliss. Let’s hope Fox does the right thing and brings this mess back for another round.
What did you think of the finale? Was Linda Grant’s ending satisfying, or are you Team Angelo all the way? Let us know in the comments and don't worry, Memory of a Killer will return for season 2! Get the details here.
