Disney+ Finally Heard Millennials: The Weekenders Arrives This May

Four cartoon kids lean on a balcony at sunset, with a palm tree and telescope behind them.

It only took Disney seven years of broken promises but our long national nightmare is finally over. Grab your favorite pizza scarf and get ready to do absolutely nothing. The Weekenders is coming to Disney+ and the 2000s kids are finally eating good.

Disney announced the major news as part of its upcoming summer campaign. The classic animated series officially drops on the streaming service on May 25, 2026. For those keeping score at home, Disney actually teased this release all the way back when the app first launched in 2019. They then proceeded to ghost the fanbase for most of a decade. Now, the four best friends from Bahia Bay are back to teach a new generation how to properly waste a Friday night.

Why This Animated Relic Still Holds Up

For the uninitiated, The Weekenders was created by Doug Langdale and originally aired on ABC’s One Saturday Morning. The premise is beautifully simple. The show follows four middle school friends, Tino, Lor, Carver, and Tish as they navigate the perilous world of pre-teen life. But there is a catch that made the show legendary. The entire series takes place strictly between Friday afternoon and Sunday night.

Most cartoons of the era kept characters trapped in the exact same clothes for decades. The Weekenders stood out because the characters actually changed outfits in every single episode. It gave the show a sense of style and realism that other shows lacked. The series also treated kids like actual humans. It dealt with real issues like divorced parents, cultural identity and the existential dread of a Monday morning math test.

The Disney+ Episode Breakdown

When you log into Disney+ this summer, the layout might look a little confusing. Here is what you need to know about the streaming format:

  • Two Seasons, Not Four: The original television run was broadcast as four separate seasons. Disney+ is releasing the show in its original production order. This means the show will be listed as having two large seasons.

  • The Full Collection: Do not panic about missing episodes. This release includes all 39 episodes of the series.

  • The Ultimate Throwback Lineup: The show is dropping alongside other nostalgic goldmines, including the beloved film The Brave Little Toaster.

The TV Cave Verdict: Worth the Nostalgia Trip?

As TV critics, we usually tell you to temper your expectations when revisiting childhood favorites. Most animated shows from the turn of the millennium do not age gracefully. They are often loud, obnoxious and filled with outdated pop culture references.

The Weekenders is the rare exception. The witty dialogue still crackles and the bond between the four leads feels incredibly authentic. It does not rely on cheap gags. Instead, it relies on sharp observational humor about how weird it feels to grow up. The show is a time capsule of a simpler era, wrapped in an iconic theme song performed by Wayne Brady.

This release is a massive win for animation fans who have spent years signing internet petitions. Disney+ finally realized that people want more than just another superhero spin-off. Sometimes, we just want to watch four kids hang out at a pizza parlor that changes its theme every weekend.
