The television landscape changed forever today with the passing of Ted Turner. The visionary entrepreneur and philanthropist who revolutionized global communications by creating the first twenty four hour news cycle died at his home in Tallahassee Florida. He was 87 years old. Turner was a transformative figure whose influence spanned from cable television and professional sports to massive land conservation efforts. His family confirmed that he passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning following a prolonged battle with Lewy body dementia, a condition he first publicly disclosed in 2018.

Born Robert Edward Turner III in Cincinnati Ohio, he took over his father’s billboard business and eventually pivoted into broadcasting. His acquisition of a small UHF station in Atlanta became the foundation for Turner Broadcasting System. In 1976 he transformed the station into a superstation by using satellite technology to broadcast to cable systems nationwide. This move paved the way for his most ambitious project which was the launch of the Cable News Network in 1980. At the time critics doubted the viability of a 24 hour news station but CNN became a global staple particularly during its extensive coverage of the Gulf War.

Beyond news Turner expanded his media empire to include iconic networks such as TBS, TNT and Cartoon Network. He also became a prominent figure in professional sports as the owner of the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Hawks. Under his ownership the Braves enjoyed a period of unprecedented success including a World Series title in 1995. His impact extended into the film industry with the creation of Turner Classic Movies which preserved and broadcasted thousands of films from the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Turner was equally recognized for his historic philanthropic contributions. In 1997 he made headlines by pledging one billion dollars to support United Nations causes which led to the creation of the United Nations Foundation. As one of the largest individual landowners in the United States he was a fierce advocate for environmental protection and played a critical role in the restoration of the American bison population.

Ted Turner leaves behind a legacy of innovation that redefined how the world consumes information. From his bold entry into cable television to his massive conservation projects his work remains a cornerstone of modern media and environmentalism. He is survived by his five children and a global network of colleagues who continue to operate within the media infrastructure he built. His contributions to the television industry ensure that his influence will be felt for generations to come.

Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.
