All American Season 8 Episode 9 Review: Khalil Finally Gets the Answers He Deserves

All American Season 8 Episode 9, “Feel,” was easily one of the most emotional episodes of the season so far. This episode had a lot going on, especially with Olivia’s situation, but what really stood out to me was the father-and-son story between Khalil and his dad. Honestly, this is the type of development I feel like we should have gotten last season, but I’m still glad the show finally gave these characters the time and emotional depth they deserved.

The episode opens with Khalil completely out of it after everything that happened. Jordan and Cassius are trying to get through to him and figure out where Olivia was taken. Then, surprisingly, Khalil’s father shows up looking for him because he’s supposed to be at the showcase. Instead of coming in angry, though, he sees the situation and immediately realizes something serious has happened. Khalil tells him what’s going on, and the moment where his dad simply steps in to help clean everything up was actually really nice to see.

Meanwhile, Jordan is understandably freaking out at the hospital, but Cassius is there trying to keep him calm. Cassius telling Jordan that he would call Spencer, Layla, or anybody else Jordan needed was a great moment. But Jordan responding by saying, “It’s our family,” really hit. That line showed just how connected everybody has become.

The biggest storyline of the episode was Khalil dealing with his mother and all the anger he has been carrying toward her. His dad notices a picture of Khalil with the people around him and reminds him that he is loved. We also start getting flashbacks to when his mother first began coming back into his life. One of those flashbacks takes us back to Layla’s karaoke night, and of course, hearing some Michael Jackson automatically made that scene even better for me!

But Khalil’s pain is much deeper than just being mad at his mom. We find out through another flashback that four years earlier, Khalil won his championship ring and the Braveheart Award. He was expecting his mother to show up, but she never did. His dad was there, but his mom wasn’t. And that explains why Khalil has such a hard time believing she has actually changed. He doesn’t want to give her another opportunity to hurt him.

The conversations between Khalil and his father were easily some of the best scenes in the episode. Seeing them cleaning up Olivia’s blood while having such raw and honest conversations was powerful. This is exactly what I felt was missing before. Khalil’s father is more than just the image we had of him in the past. This episode finally allows us to see him as a father who genuinely loves his son and is trying to become a better man. Him admitting that he learned how to be better by watching Khalil over the past year was probably one of my favorite moments.

Elsewhere, Coop and Amina are dealing with the aftermath of everything involving the ICE arrests. The press showing up when they thought their food delivery had arrived was crazy, and Amina breaking down showed just how much this entire situation is affecting her. Coop is still carrying a lot of guilt, and her relationship with Breonna continues to fall apart because she refuses to answer her calls.

When Breonna finally gets the chance to confront Coop, the scene gets emotional fast. Amina eventually tells Coop something she really needed to hear: she needs to figure out who she wants to be. And the line that Amina would have loved any version of Coop was heartbreaking. That entire scene was beautifully acted.

I also loved seeing Amina and Khalil finally make up after all the drama between them. I have been waiting for that moment! Khalil giving Amina advice about KJ and telling her not to wait too long to tell him she loves him was especially meaningful because he was clearly speaking from his own experience and regrets.

The episode also keeps the tension going at Beverly, with KJ trying to stall while the scouts get impatient. Cliff starts pressuring him for answers about Jordan and Cassius, and even though Cliff eventually tells him to take his time, something about the situation immediately sets off alarms for KJ.

By the end, Khalil finally gets the emotional closure he desperately needed. His mother admits through tears that she never felt worthy of his love and took the cowardly way out by staying away. It doesn’t magically fix everything, but it finally gives Khalil some answers. Then Jordan encourages Khalil to go to the showcase and go be great, reminding him that he believes in him.

Overall, “Feel” was exactly what the title promised. This episode was raw, emotional, and full of powerful conversations. The father-and-son development with Khalil and his dad was the highlight for me, and the emotional moments between Coop, Amina, and Breonna added even more weight to the episode.

This was an episode where All American slowed down and allowed its characters to actually feel everything they’ve been through—and honestly, I loved every minute of it.
