Titled "Detroit," the opening hour shifts the franchise into an entirely new gear, trading the quiet, gothic brooding of New Orleans for the loud, sweaty reality of a modern-day rockstar era. Lestat is back, he is profoundly offended by Daniel Molloy's published book and he is ready to scream his side of the story over a wall of electric guitars. It's 2026 modern day and there is a super secret auction that revolves around artifacts connected to Lestat's 2025 rock tour, including his music, handwritten compositions and a bizarre collection known as "The Failures," 111 audio recordings that supposedly document the disastrous aftermath of his rise to fame. The episode then jumps back to show how this all began, and the answer is surprisingly simple: Lestat got his feelings hurt. The premiere wastes zero time establishing Lestat’s pettiness. He crashes a random garage band practice on Halloween night, hits them with that signature vampire allure and completely steals their entire operation. He literally renames the entire band after himself. "The Vampire Lestat" is born out of pure spite and the transition from 18th-century theater to 21st-century rock star works surprisingly well. He wants stadium-sized validation and the local music scene is the perfect vessel. What causes this transformation? While on a Facetime call with Louis (after playing him his music) Lestat gets a notification about the book drop, completely blindsided, he demands that Louis explain himself while heading straight for a book store. The sequence was hilarious, book store employees dragging Lestat for filth while he stands in front of them barely able to contain his anger. Later at home, Lestat crashes out writing lies all over the book and to add insult to his injury a group of trick or treaters show up dressed as him, Louis, Claudia, Armand. All this with the band playing horribly across the street, sends Lestat to his future bandmates door. While they have entertaining back and forth, Lestat spends the episode texting someone we believe to be Louis. Underneath the leather jackets, sold-out crowds, and arena-sized ego is a man who desperately wants to be loved. That's what makes the episode work. For all his arrogance, Lestat remains painfully sensitive to rejection. That vulnerability explodes during a Detroit concert. Already rattled by criticism from vampires in the audience and frustrated when former frontman Larry steals attention during a performance, Lestat finally unravels on stage. His breakdown blurs the line between performance and reality as visions of Louis, Claudia, and other ghosts from his past invade the moment. The result is one of the premiere's most memorable sequences. Music, grief, guilt, and bloodlust collide in a spectacular display that leaves the audience completely unaware they're witnessing a genuine supernatural meltdown. We are introduced to a group of new and interesting characters like Baby Jenks, a young fan whose storyline quickly becomes one of the episode’s most compelling threads. Lestat has an overdose on her blood which sends him into the craziest hallucination that leaves more questions than answers. Of course, no Masters of the Universe story would be complete without Skeletor, and Jared Leto absolutely surprised me in the role. In fact, this may be my favorite performance from him in years. He fully embraces Skeletor's larger-than-life presence while still making him feel threatening and dangerous. Whether he's delivering intimidating speeches or commanding his forces, Leto looks like he's having a blast. Joining him is Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn. While I wasn't completely sold on every aspect of her performance, I still enjoyed what she brought to the character and appreciated her chemistry with Skeletor. The production design, costumes, creatures, and environments all help bring Eternia to life in a way that feels both epic and believable. It's clear that a tremendous amount of care went into creating this fantasy world, and that attention to detail pays off in every frame. The action sequences are thrilling, the humor lands consistently, and the movie's themes are surprisingly thoughtful. There is an underlying exploration of masculinity and what it truly means to be a man, but it's handled with far more nuance than I expected. One particularly touching scene between Adam and his father perfectly captures the film's emotional core and left a lasting impression on me. At the end of the day, Masters of the Universe exceeded all of my expectations. It delivers spectacular action, strong character development, emotional storytelling, and breathtaking visuals while remaining true to the adventurous spirit that made the franchise beloved in the first place. I loved every minute of this movie, and I genuinely believe audiences will too. Do yourself a favor and see it in theaters. Don't wait for streaming. This is the kind of fantasy epic that deserves the big-screen experience, and if you skip it, you might end up regretting it. Score: 9.5/10

Marking a full decade of curating animated magic for the Tribeca Festival, Whoopi returned to the 2026 lineup with her signature flair, dividing her empire into two blocks: the family-friendly Whoopi’s Wonderful World of Animation and the mature, 14+ Animated Shorts Curated by Whoopi G. Screening live at Spring Studios in downtown New York, the family block proved that sometimes the most profound storytelling happens in under ten minutes. We sat through the kids' stuff, and whew, the talent on display is no joke. Here is a breakdown of what soared, what made us emotional and what you need to track down immediately. The Standout Shorts You Cannot Miss The family program featured seven carefully selected short films focusing on deep, real-world themes like friendship, identity, and persistence. Dear Upstairs Neighbors: Directed by Connie Qin He, this short is a literal fever dream for anyone who has ever lived in a studio apartment. Instead of just showing a sleep-deprived young woman getting annoyed by overhead thumping, the animation visually translates those aggressive noises into vibrant, imaginative sequences. ROAR: This piece takes audiences on a gorgeous, highly memorable journey through the hilly streets of San Francisco. Following a young girl named Tora and her mother, the short blends stunning environmental artwork with a deeply grounded emotional center. ChikaBOOM!: If you want pure, unfiltered fun, this is your winner. It follows the daughter of a magician who tries to pull off her own trick, only to unleash a creature that completely turns her world upside down. The comedic timing in the framing is incredibly sharp. Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe!: Centering on a group of children living up in the clouds, this short introduces us to Yios. It tackles family and the struggle of making friends when you literally stand out from the crowd. It is sweet without being overly sappy. We see everything from classic hand-drawn styles to hyper-modern digital textures. She understands that animation allows creators to explore heavy, human subject matter in ways live-action simply cannot replicate. While the family block keeps things light and hopeful, her adjacent mature block features heavy hitters like Apart—a historic world premiere written by Spike Lee and directed by Pola Maneli. The dual blocks show the sheer range of what the medium can achieve when given the proper platform. Whoopi’s Wonderful World of Animation at the 2026 Tribeca Festival is a massive triumph for independent animators. The films are tight, beautifully paced and visually stunning. I will admit that this is my first viewing of this movie, but I was so excited and honored to be able to watch a newly restored version for the 25th Anniversary of the film. Thank you to the creators and team for allowing me to screen an early release of this for review. By Hook or By Crook is truly a testament and landmark of queer cinema, particularly the trans and gender non-conforming subgenre in film. On the surface level, the film has a pretty simple overarching premise, it follows two unlikely individuals who happen to find themselves on a similar path and they form a friendship together and begin to go on a pseudo-Bonnie and Clyde adventure and find ways to work the system and scam people so that they can make cash and continue on their journey. On a deeper level, the film deconstructs a lot of societal ideas about gender and gender roles within the early 2000’s. I cannot think of many films that have had this level of awareness and actually trans and gender non-conforming actors within the roles to this day, but especially in the 2000’s. On another level it’s a very “slice of life” kind of movie. We are following our characters, Shy and Valentine throughout their day-to-day lives. Including the hijinks they get into, their personal lives and struggles, and the ultimate goals of the separate and collective journeys they are going on. I think that outside of the phenomenal performances, the amazing cinematography, and the important representation covered in this story, it just is a story that you become immersed in and you can’t help but want the best for these characters and you want to see how their stories are going to turn out. Also, I have major respect for the actors in the film because it is majorly dialogue heavy in storytelling purposes and I know how heavy of a pull that can be in a feature. If this review seems vague, it is intentionally that way. I think that this is a movie that has high praise and recognition from those that know about it, but it is essential viewing in my opinion. It’s a film that I think everyone can find enjoyment out of and a film that holds up even after 25 years. Overall, this is a fun and enjoyable buddy film that has some hallmark moments of the genre, while also reinventing it and being ahead of its time. The acting, screenplay, and cinematography shine through in every scene and the story flows beautifully. I would give this a solid 5/5 star rating & I’m definitely looking toward to the upcoming physical media release coming this summer. This week on Beyond The Gates… mostly filler and narratives, not much action. Let’s discuss. The Plasma Aftermath Part Deux Jacob vows to get revenge for Derek’s death. He then receives a commendation for his work in bringing down a plasma ring that is still active and operating. You can’t make this up. Jacob did a terrible job, and while Derek’s blood is not on his hands, the whole thing was a fumble. Jacob asks Smitty to use his article to sus out the Impaler, which is another point toward his incompetence, but I digress. Shanice and Eva struggle with the grief of losing Derek. Ted, who is still in the doghouse, asks Nicole to talk to Shanice. She does, and it helps, but Shanice rightfully calls Ted out. When things get tough, he outsources support instead of hanging in there and doing the hard part himself. I really hate what has happened to Ted. Jacob hates his commendation ceremony. Darlene is nasty toward Eva for no reason, and Leslie calls Darlene’s locs “predator tentacles.” I want to know who wrote that because that was racist, and I don’t know why anyone thought it was a good idea. Jacob ducks out of the ceremony early and heads to the bar, where he bumps into Kat. She offers comfort without piling on, which is exactly what Jacob needed. I love their chemistry, but I just cannot get on that ship. Ashley is still being treated like a widow and like she actually liked Derek. She goes off on Grayson, and I couldn’t help but think about how much of a hypocrite she is. Joey talks tough. He wants the Impaler to know that he cannot do business on his turf. This leads to the Impaler requesting a meeting, which also leads to a week full of fluff before the cliffhanger ends with Joey coming face-to-face with the Impaler. Fantasies, Relationship Ungoals, Desperate Housewives, and Other Happenings Nicole and Vanessa talk about Nicole’s fantasies regarding Ted. Vanessa encourages Nicole to fess up, and she almost does. Thankfully, she is interrupted. Now, let’s wrap that up. Smitty is feeling overwhelmed with everyone in the house while he is trying to write his article, so he ushers them all out. Tyrell and Jessica sneak off to have sex and talk about school. Dear writers, we do not want a teen pregnancy story. Thanks. Ted asks Shanice to be his fundraiser date. Vernon talks to Victor Newman, and Monica considers the Chief of Staff position. Weekly Wrap This week was boring and highly narrative without much action. This recap was a chore because of it. The show spent most of the week talking around the fallout instead of giving us fallout with teeth. Jacob’s commendation made no sense, Ashley is still being centered in a grief story she did not earn, and the Impaler plot continues to drag its feet while pretending to sprint. Next week looks very promising, but we shall see.

While Kristina works up the nerve to issue a serious request, Curtis finds himself cornered and seeks Alexis’ much-needed help. Meanwhile, Kai is spending his energy worrying about Trina, which is entirely fair given what is coming next. By Tuesday, a mysterious confession from "Nathan" sends shockwaves through the canvas, right as Portia’s baby shower turns into an incredibly tense affair. Sidwell is out here on the warpath, leaving a completely blindsided Willow to pick up the pieces while Brook Lynn issues a rare apology. Midweek brings even more strategic maneuvering. Carly does what she does best and takes definitive action, while Trina stands her ground to make a incredibly bold decision. Poor Dante gets hit with a wave of bad news, and Willow finds herself staring down a very tempting offer that could change her trajectory. Don't expect a happy home life for everyone, though, as Curtis and Portia aggressively clash over their next steps. As Thursday rolls around, Valentin steps in to caution Carly about her reckless behavior, and Ava is left wrestling with a deeply guilty conscience. Sonny finds himself taken completely by surprise, Nina goes out of her way to check in on “Nathan,” and Cody manages to score some major points with Molly. To wrap up the midweek madness, Danny and Charlotte sneak away to make a secret plan of their own. Friday doesn't let up on the gas pedal; Ethan is forced to weigh his complex options while Tracy delivers some trademark harsh words directly to Willow. Brook Lynn is left with no choice but to seek Sonny’s criminal aid, Chase successfully pulls off a very high-profile arrest, and a highly persuasive Alexis works her magic to close out the week. Whew, talk about breathless pacing. Meanwhile, the midwest drama is hitting a boiling point on The Young and the Restless. Monday kicks off with the ultimate power move as Victor single-handedly determines Matt Clark’s ultimate fate. Lily catches everyone off guard by making Cane a highly surprising offer, and Malcolm finally returns home to Genoa City to shake things up. Tuesday sees Malcolm and Stephanie immediately getting down to business to settle their unfinished business, while Sharon goes out of her way to keep her distance from Matt Clark. Plus, Noah is stepping into the entrepreneur spotlight as he hosts the grand opening of the new Shadow Room. By Wednesday, romance and rivalry take center stage. Christine starts seeing Danny in a completely new light, Victoria and Kyle surprisingly call a truce to their corporate warfare, and Sienna stands her ground during a fierce confrontation with Audra. Thursday tests everyone's limits when Victor makes a shocking business decision that will reverberate through Chancellor Park. Nikki steps up to support Nick with his ongoing sobriety journey, and Stephanie shares a major secret with Nate. To close out the week, Victor turns his interrogation tactics on his own family as he questions Nikki about her pressing health issues. Phyllis does what she does best and reaches out to Summer, and a scheming Adam keeps close tabs on Matt Clark. The Newman family drama is never truly over. For the citizens of Salem on Days of Our Lives, life is a revolving door of medical mysteries and bad decisions. Monday starts with a desperate Sarah asking Brady for help, while an aggressive Philip threatens Xander. EJ’s latest grand offer is flatly refused, and the infamous Dr. Rolf gets to work examining Lexie. Tuesday brings relationship friction as Joy deliberately comes between Alex and Stephanie, EJ issues a stern warning to Gwen, and Javi asks Gabi for a massive favor. We also see Kristen and Xander bonding over their shared wickedness, which can only mean trouble. By Wednesday, Leo is pleading for Gwen to be careful with her next moves, and Amy finally opens up to Melinda. On a sweeter note, Tate and Holly manage to enjoy some rare romance, while Jada and Shawn grow significantly closer. Alex attempts to play peacemaker and tries to defuse the situation between Joy and Stephanie, but the peace is short-lived. Thursday sees Paulina taking extreme, desperate action for the sake of Chanel, while Theo steps up to support Johnny. EJ and Xander get into a massive verbal spar, Sarah surprises Holly and Ari with a special gift, and Kate finally comes clean to Roman. Friday wraps up with Steve and Kayla offering their full support to Stephanie, while Alex tries one more time to reason with Joy. Cat looks EJ dead in the eye and lies to his face, Chad and Belle take Thomas and Charlotte out to a peaceful baseball game, and Jada and Shawn finally address their rapidly growing feelings for each other. The real showstopper of the week belongs to Beyond the Gates, which is hosting a massive daytime crossover event that you cannot miss. Monday starts with a bang as the true identity of The Impaler is finally revealed to the audience. Vanessa is forced to lean heavily on Dani to help alleviate her mounting anxiety, while Ted and Andre update each other on the complicated current state of their respective romantic relationships. Leslie is also on a mission, determined to secure an exclusive invitation to Martin’s upcoming fundraiser. Tuesday is where the worlds collide. The one and only Victor Newman touches down in Fairmont Crest to cause trouble, right as the Richardson-Smiths prepare for Martin’s big fundraiser. Naomi talks openly to Dani about her deepest fears for Jacob’s well-being, Jacob locks horns with Elon at the station, and Leslie successfully crashes Mona’s high-society event. By Wednesday, the Genoa City invasion expands significantly. Jack, Diane, and Kyle Abbott, along with Devon and Abby, officially arrive at Martin’s fundraiser to mingle with the locals. Naomi convinces Ashley to join her at the club, but the party is cut short when an actual tornado strikes Fairmont Crest. Thursday deals with the immediate aftermath as the local country club takes a direct hit from the tornado. In the wreckage, Bill and Dani are forced to rely entirely on each other to survive, Eva and Kat find themselves forced to work together despite their hatred, and Hayley ends up in close proximity to someone incredibly surprising. Friday deals with the clean-up and the fallout; Joey’s swift actions earn him major favor with a mystery VIP, and Ted deals with multiple simultaneous crises. The drastic measures one desperate duo takes have extreme, far-reaching consequences, and Anita spies something highly peculiar before issuing a stern warning to the town. What an absolute rollercoaster of a week. From corporate takeovers and long-hidden secrets to literal weather disasters ruining high-society fundraisers, daytime television is firing on all cylinders.
