Well, it isn't that shocking; over the last four seasons this series has established itself as a very specific kind of comfort food. I've considered this series the most boringly entertaining show on television. You do not tune in expecting backstabbing soap opera histrionics or high-octane thrillers. Instead, the appeal relies entirely on wholesome town gossip, family, faith and the unbreakable bond of the core trio. That comforting foundation remains firmly intact for the fifth installment, but the writers must have been on A03 reading fanfiction. The typical PG-rated romance has been dialed up a noticeable notch. While it does not transform into a late-night cable drama overnight, the passion is palpable, injecting fresh energy into the established formula. This season centers completely on summer fun, major life transitions and personal growth, proving that even a cozy town like Serenity cannot stay frozen in time forever. The Magnolias Face Major Turning Points When we last left our favorite trio, the emotional dust was still settling. This season throws each woman into a distinct crucible of change. Boots Riley’s sophomore film, I Love Boosters, is finally out, and opinions are definitely mixed. As someone who went into the movie without having seen any of Riley’s previous work, I walked away with mixed feelings myself. Spoilers ahead. The trailer had me excited for a comedy centered around the Velvet Gang, a group of female boosters who regularly shoplift from Metro Designers, a fashion chain run by Christie Smith. The Velvet Gang takes things one step further by becoming employees at Metro Designers as part of an elaborate plan to steal the store’s entire inventory. However, before they can pull it off, someone beats them to the punch. Enter Jianpu, a booster from China who uses teleportation technology to empty an entire store in under a minute. The four boosters eventually join forces for the ultimate takedown of Metro Designers, a mission that ultimately ties back to exposing and addressing the harsh working conditions and greed within the fashion industry. The chemistry between Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, and Demi Singleton Paige was undeniable, and they definitely had me laughing throughout the film. Add Poppy Liu to the mix, and the group makes for a fantastic ensemble. The comedy and high-energy chaos teased in the trailer delivered. What I wasn’t prepared for, however, were the sci-fi and magical realism elements woven into the story. I definitely found myself muttering, “What is going on?” more than once. The soul-sucking demon character, for example, left me completely confused, and by the end of the film, scenes involving the removal of the characters’ skin had me more unsettled than entertained. There was so much happening in the final act that it became difficult to focus on any one storyline. Maximalism is very much the name of the game here. From the bright visuals to the eye-catching fashion, the film embraces excess in every possible way and that extends to the plot itself. In fact, the visuals were my favorite part of the movie. So many films today lean into moody lighting and muted color palettes, but I Love Boosters goes in the opposite direction. It was refreshing to see so much color, texture, pattern, and personality on screen. While I can understand why some viewers absolutely loved the film and are already calling it a future camp cult classic, I can also understand why others walked out of the theater. In my opinion, the movie was slightly misadvertised which may be why it’s already being pulled from a lot of theatres. If advertised as more of a camp movie and not a comedy/heist movie I believe it would have reached a better audience. Audiences who are unfamiliar with Boots’ work should do some research on his style and I wish I would have done the same. While I definitely appreciate it and am glad I saw the movie, I’m unsure if it’s one I’ll be revisiting anytime soon.

We watched her navigate Aa messy, heartbreaking pregnancy storyline with Eric Brady, the turbulent office politics of the Salem PD, Aa slow-burn, complicated romance with Rafe and her current, budding relationship with legacy character Shawn Brady. Cantu brought a grounded, no-nonsense energy to a show that frequently flies off the rails. She made Jada fiercely independent, deeply human, and completely unforgettable. Before you completely lose your mind, there is a bit of good news. Because Days of Our Lives famously tapes its episodes roughly 10 months in advance, Elia Cantu will remain on our screens for a long time. Jada’s final scenes likely won't air until late 2026 or even early 2027. This gives the writers plenty of time to give the character a proper send-off. Currently, Jada is getting closer to Shawn Brady, a storyline that has plenty of potential to deliver major emotional beats before she walks out of the Salem PD doors for the last time. Between the stress of work and relationships, it seems like our lovable crew is finding themselves in some sticky situations. We’re seeing quite a bit of mixing business with pleasure, and I can’t decide if I love it or hate it. Before diving into the romance, I want to highlight how these two episodes showcased our characters continuing to climb the corporate ladder. While everyone is in different industries and at different stages of their careers, it’s fun to see the parallels between them. At the end of the day, they’re all trying to move forward professionally and do whatever it takes to get there. Whether it’s taking a workout class to corner a potential client or scoring an endocrinologist appointment to win over a boss, I thought these moments highlighted the post-grad hustle mindset really well. Another consistent theme throughout these episodes was the messiness that comes with mixing work and play. We see four of our five main characters diving into complicated relationships with coworkers or bosses, and it’s becoming increasingly clear that the risks may outweigh the rewards. When it comes to messiness, however, Kaling shines. Take Davis, for example. He’s a great illustration of how mixing work with pleasure can come back around to bite you. While Davis is obviously in the wrong, you can’t help but root for him anyway. What makes Kaling’s characters so special is that you genuinely want them to succeed. Their flaws don’t make them less likable, they make them more human. Diving further into the office romances, we find both of our female leads in interesting situations with their bosses. What I enjoy most about AJ and Abby is their work ethic. They’re both incredibly driven, another quality Kaling consistently writes so well. I can’t help but worry, though, that these potential relationships with their superiors might throw them off their game. Looking at AJ first, while I love the small moments between her and Bill, this is the first time we’ve seen her distracted at work. It’s interesting to watch someone so focused lose her footing a bit, but I don’t see this relationship lasting, and I’d hate for it to backfire on her. Then we have Abby, who has finally left her emotionally draining job as an assistant to start building her own client base, beginning with the charming actor Austin. While we know Austin is definitely interested in Abby, I can’t tell whether the writers are planning to explore a romance between them or have Abby stand firm in her desire to keep things professional. While Austin may seem like the obvious choice to some viewers, I’m still holding out hope for Abby and Kel. Kel sacrificing his career because he knows Abby deserves better was one of the most swoon-worthy moments of Episode 6. Kaling is clearly playing the long game with these two, and honestly, I’ll wait as long as it takes. I’d also be remiss not to mention Josh’s night out with Elena. For now, I have no complaints about their relationship. I enjoy their banter and playful dynamic, and Elena seems like the perfect rebound for Josh. AJ said it best: workplace relationships may be fun, but they get messy. I’m excited to see how the next few episodes play out and just how messy Kaling is willing to get.
