Mike Flanagan has been carving out a reputation as the go-to director for Stephen King adaptations in recent years. While his work in horror has been consistently impressive, The Life of Chuck marks a significant shift—his first foray into a more dramatic, non-horror King adaptation. This film serves as a true test of his range as a filmmaker. When The Life of Chuck won the Audience Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, I was immediately intrigued. With Loki’s Tom Hiddleston in the lead role and a star-studded supporting cast, this was one I was genuinely excited to see. Honestly, I’m surprised it waited until this year for a wide release—it could have easily been an awards contender last season. Then again, it may be one to watch come the next Oscar season. I’m incredibly grateful to have received early access to the film—otherwise, I would’ve had to wait until August for its UK release. Huge thanks to Je-Ree for making this possible. After watching The Life of Chuck for the first time, here are my thoughts. The film tells the story of Charles “Chuck” Krantz in three acts, presented in reverse chronological order, and each segment keeps you invested in Chuck’s life. The first act focuses on various characters during the final day of Chuck’s life, trying to make sense of a strange phenomenon surrounding him. The second act centres on a day when Chuck performs a great deed for someone. The final act explores his childhood. These stories are beautifully interconnected, forming a cohesive narrative rather than feeling like separate vignettes. I genuinely cared about Chuck and the people in his life—their arcs felt meaningful. While the story could have been told in chronological order and still worked, presenting it in reverse gives it a unique emotional rhythm that sets the film apart. The cast does an outstanding job bringing these characters to life, and their performances elevate the story to another level. Tom Hiddleston delivers a deeply moving lead performance, making Chuck feel like a real person, despite limited screen time. His presence lingers throughout the entire film. I also want to praise Jacob Tremblay and the two other child actors who portray Chuck during his early years—they each bring warmth and depth to the role. The supporting cast is equally brilliant. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Carl Lumbly, Matthew Lillard, and Mia Sara all turn in standout performances, each making a strong impression. But at the heart of the film is Mark Hamill as Chuck’s grandfather—he gives what I think is the best performance of the entire film. Hamill absolutely shines in every scene he appears in, proving he’s far more than just Luke Skywalker or a legendary voice actor. Having only seen Oculus from Flanagan’s filmography before this, I have to say The Life of Chuck is my favorite work of his so far. The cinematography perfectly captures the film’s visual style, while The Newton Brothers’ score adds a whimsical, tender tone. Flanagan’s editing choices bring a unique rhythm that complements the narrative beautifully. The Life of Chuck now takes the top spot as my favorite film of 2025. I can’t wait to experience it again on the big screen when it releases in the UK this August. From Flanagan’s direction to the performances, storytelling, editing, cinematography, and score—everything about this film makes it one of the standout cinematic experiences of the 2020s. Because instead of tossing the bouquet, our favorite ride-or-die Southern belle got slapped with handcuffs, at her own wedding—and not in the fun  kind of way. Now with Season 3 of Ginny & Georgia  less than a week away, all I can say is: grab your wine, your therapy journal, and maybe a lawyer, because things are about to get messy. We’ve got arrests, emotional trauma, exes lurking like bad decisions, and a daughter who’s trying real  hard not to become her mother (while accidentally doing just that). So naturally, I’ve got predictions—and plenty of them. Let’s get into the possible chaos, character growth (or lack thereof), and romantic rebounds coming our way in Season 3. Austin & Zion—The Bond We Didn’t Know We Needed Now this  is the relationship I’ve got my eye on this season. Because listen—Austin has seen way  too much for a kid his age. Gun violence, secrets, murder confessions, and now his mama getting hauled off in a wedding dress? Whew. That boy is not okay, and Zion might just be the only adult in his life stable enough to show up consistently without dragging a trail of emotional destruction behind him. Zion has that calm, grounded, emotionally intelligent dad energy—and let’s be real, Austin needs more of that and less “Gil popping up with a smirk and a threat.” I see this season giving us some tender, much-needed moments between them as well as some flashbacks on their relationship in the past. I can see Zion being the one Austin finally opens up to about what he saw Georgia do. And Zion stepping into that protector role not just for Ginny, but for Austin too? That’s the redemption arc I’m rooting for. Paul & Georgia – A Marriage Built on Mayhem (and Lies) Let’s go ahead and call it, Paul and Georgia are just not it! Pretty together for about five minutes… until the truth hits. Yes, he's charming, decent, and has that small-town political prince energy—but Georgia? Georgia is chaos wrapped in deceiving charm and survival instincts. And Paul? Baby, he still thinks honesty is a love language.  Season 3 is going to peel the bandaid all the way off  this mismatched marriage. Georgia lied to him, manipulated him, and walked down the aisle with a smile full of secrets. Yes, she did come clean about a few things, but those things were definitely selective. He found out the very next second  that he married a woman accused of murder. Now unless Paul suddenly taps into his dark side (and I’m not holding my breath ), I don’t see him sticking around for Georgia's emotional firestorm. And don’t get me wrong—Paul wants  to be her safe space. He wants the white picket fence, the kids, the clean slate. But Georgia doesn't do  clean. She does “survive at all costs,” and Paul? He’s allergic to mess, especially the kind that could ruin his mayoral career and land him on the evening news. The real issue here? Georgia doesn’t trust him enough to be real. She gave him the curated version of herself, not the scarred woman beneath. And when the truth is that ugly, love alone won’t be enough to hold things together. Trust me, I’ve seen this in real life too many times—if someone can’t handle the whole truth, they can’t handle you . So my bet? This marriage either combusts early in Season 3 or simmers into resentment and power plays. Either way, Georgia’s going to realize something: marrying a “good guy” doesn’t work if you’ve never felt safe enough to be  good yourself. Georgia & Zion – Old Flame, New Fire? Let’s be honest—Zion has always been that  guy. Smooth, steady, and somehow still has Georgia’s number (emotionally and probably literally). He knows her past, has seen her mess, and still shows up—camera in hand, heart in pocket, ready to love her and  the chaos she brings. That kind of history doesn’t just fade, especially when the new husband is falling apart at the seams. In Season 3, with Paul questioning everything and Georgia possibly facing jail time, don’t be surprised if Zion steps back into her orbit—and not just as the cool co-parent. There’s a bond there that’s never fully broken. And unlike Paul, Zion doesn’t need Georgia to be perfect. He already knows she’s cracked and complicated—and he respects the grind that got her here. The tension? Still there. The trust? Stronger than with Paul, ironically. And the love? Oh, it’s always been simmering under the surface, waiting for the right (or wrong) moment to catch fire again. Because here’s the thing: Zion’s not naïve. He knows Georgia didn’t just “fall into” a life of lies and body counts. He’s watched her cover things up, manipulate situations, and weaponize charm like it’s her superpower. And while he’s turned a blind eye to a lot  of it in the name of co-parenting and complicated love, Season 3 could be the moment where he draws a line—for his sake, and for Ginny and Austin. And that would hurt  Georgia in a whole new way. I see a moment coming where Zion has to choose: does he keep enabling Georgia's survival tactics, or does he finally challenge her to stop running from herself? And if that means loving her from a distance? Whew. That’s going to sting more than any breakup—because Georgia trusts  Zion’s love, but she’s never really earned his trust in return. Would a Georgia-Zion reunion be messy? Absolutely. But would it be real ? Yes—and maybe for once, that’s what they need to finally be themselves. Marcus Breaks the Code and Tells on Georgia Now if this  happens? We are in for a season-shaking moment. Because Marcus? Sweet, broody, sad-boy Marcus? He might be more dangerous to Georgia than anyone realizes—and not because he wants  to hurt her, but because he actually cares  about Ginny in a real, unfiltered, “I want you safe even if it costs me everything” kind of way. Let’s go back to when Ginny told Marcus her mother killed her stepfather to protect her. That’s not some lighthearted “my mom's wild” confession. That’s deep trauma. And Marcus, bless his quiet little heart, is walking around with that  secret burning a hole in his conscience. The reality is, Marcus has his own mental health struggles,and he doesn't play about emotional safety. He sees Ginny spiraling. He sees how this trauma is eating  at her. And one day—especially if Georgia keeps hurting Ginny, or if the law closes in—I can absolutely  see Marcus breaking and going to someone. Maybe Zion. Maybe the police. Maybe even Paul. Not to be malicious. Not for revenge. But because he believes telling the truth might be the only way to finally free  Ginny from Georgia’s web. And when Georgia finds out? Oh, it’s over. She will see that as betrayal of the highest order. Because Georgia doesn’t just survive off secrets—she needs  loyalty to breathe. And Marcus? He’ll be enemy number one, especially if it leads to new charges, new danger, or Ginny emotionally pulling away from her mother even more. Zion’s Girlfriend Defends Georgia? The Pettiest Plot Twist Yet Okay, now hear me out, Simone, Zion’s smart, accomplished, no-nonsense criminal lawyer girlfriend, stepping in to defend Georgia  after she gets arrested? That would be the ultimate plot twist—and I am here for it! Because let’s remember: Simone was introduced last season with a career that was lowkey suspiciously relevant. Criminal law? In a show about a woman with bodies buried figuratively and literally ? That wasn't a coincidence—that was setup. So now Georgia’s behind bars, and who better to step up than Simone? Except, Simone does not  like Georgia .  You could feel the tension whenever they shared screen time. Simone knows Georgia is manipulative. She sees right through the “Southern charm” act, and she probably has a whole group chat dedicated to unpacking Georgia’s demeanor. But here’s where it gets real complicated, what if Zion asks her for help. And if Zion asks, Simone might actually  say yes. Why? Because she’s a professional, and despite the pettiness simmering beneath the surface, she loves him. She cares about Ginny. And somewhere deep down, she knows that Georgia’s mess doesn’t mean Ginny should lose her mother completely. Ginny & Max Are About to Get Their Flirt On First up—Ginny. Sis has been through it. Marcus, heartbreak, family drama, and a casual side of generational trauma. So when  Netflix  announced a new boy in her poetry class—Wolfe, played by Ty Doran—I leaned all the way in. Wolfe is described as “laid-back” and “not that into poetry,” which screams disinterested bad boy who ends up accidentally falling in love through a shared trauma monologue and a group project.  You know the type. And Ginny? She loves a brooding boy with a messy edge (Oh, hey, Marcus!).  Wolfe might be the kind of love interest Ginny needs now —someone outside her circle, who doesn’t know her history or her mom’s rap sheet. Someone who sees her for who she is , not what she’s been through. And if he challenges her in class? Bonus points. I can already see her writing a poem about him, and then swearing it isn’t about him.  Now for Max—oh, my chaos loving drama queen. After that wild ride with Sophie, Max deserves someone who gets  her, matches her energy, and doesn’t make her feel like she has to shrink to be loved. Netflix broke news that Noah Lamanna (they/them)  will play Tris, introduced as a skateboard friend of Marcus and Silver will be recurring this season, who is already giving fresh energy and a much-needed nonbinary rep. I’m predicting this character will not only shake up Max’s love life, but also challenge her to grow emotionally—because let’s be honest, Max can be a lot , and she needs someone who can call her out while still cuddling on the couch afterward. Georgia & Joe’s Backstory Is About to Hit Us Where It Hurts So let’s rewind. Way back when, teen Georgia and teen Joe had that blink-and-you’ll-miss-it  meet-cute moment at a bus stop. He gave her his number, she kept his sunglasses, and they both went on with their lives like fate hadn’t just literally  tried to start something. But now? Years later, she’s back in his orbit, married (for now), wanted (again), and emotionally unavailable (per usual)—and Joe’s just… there. Watching. Waiting. Running that coffee shop like it’s his emotional support business. And I don’t care what anyone says, the connection is there . And the past? It’s begging  to be explored. I can foreshadow Season 3 cracking open that lost chapter of Georgia and Joe’s teenage years. Maybe we get flashbacks. I pray we get flashbacks! Maybe Georgia confesses more than she meant to after one too many wine nights or police interrogations. But either way, we’re going to find out exactly  why she never called him—and I bet it’s because she couldn’t , not because she didn’t want to. Maybe she was running from something, or someone. Maybe she already knew she was pregnant with Ginny. Maybe she saw Joe’s kindness and knew she’d ruin it. Because Georgia doesn’t just avoid love—she dodges anything that feels safe . And Joe? He’s always been the one safe space she never dared step into. But this season? The walls are crumbling. Her marriage is probably over, her secrets are catching up, and Joe is still standing there, loyal in flannel, offering decaf and quiet judgment. You know  he still feels something. But will he finally say  something? Season 3 is about consequences, identity, and those messy in-between moments where love and survival get twisted up. I’ll be honest with you all, I'm a big fan of Wes Anderson. I truly believe he’s one of the most divisive directors working today. Why? Because all of his films maintain a consistent level of quality, and how people rank his filmography often comes down to personal taste rather than clear-cut quality differences. For example, while I really enjoyed Asteroid City, I found it less engaging on a rewatch. So going into The Phoenician Scheme, I wasn't sure what to expect. Luckily, living in the UK meant I had the pleasure of seeing it early ahead of its US release. And now that I’ve seen it, here are my thoughts. People often joke that Wes Anderson’s films are all style and no story. But with The Phoenician Scheme, that couldn’t be further from the truth. This film has a real plot, a proper espionage adventure centered around a dysfunctional family and their business associates. It’s the kind of storytelling I feel Anderson has been missing lately, and it’s great to see that sense of adventure return to his work. While Anderson’s signature dry humor is still very much present, this might be the darkest film he’s ever made. From the moment I heard it described as an “espionage thriller,” I was intrigued. This film is tonally different, darker in mood, story, and even in visual style. The colour grading in particular leans into more muted tones, shifting away from Anderson’s usual vibrant palette. This film also marks a first: Anderson working without his longtime cinematographer Robert Yeoman. Instead, the cinematography is handled by Bruno Delbonnel, one of my personal favorites. And honestly? Delbonnel is a perfect fit. His visual style complements Anderson’s symmetrical compositions and aesthetic quirks while adding a new richness and texture. His experimental touches feel fresh and elevate the film even further. Alexandre Desplat’s score is another highlight. It complements the film’s tone beautifully, as does the stellar production design and costuming. The editing is also sharp and purposeful, making the narrative feel more cohesive and straightforward than some of Anderson’s more recent, vignette-heavy films. The performances are top-tier. Benicio del Toro delivers a brilliant leading performance, while Mia Threapleton impresses with a strong breakout role as his daughter. The supporting cast, Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Richard Ayoade, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, and Benedict Cumberbatch, are all excellent, each making a meaningful impact rather than fading into the background as mere cameos. But for me, the standout performance goes to Michael Cera, who absolutely steals the show whenever he’s on screen. His awkward, deadpan charm feels tailor-made for Anderson’s world. He doesn’t just fit in, he feels like he’s always belonged there. I genuinely hope this marks the beginning of a Cera-Anderson partnership and sparks a renaissance in Cera’s film career. He deserves it. The Phoenician Scheme may end up being divisive among Anderson fans, but personally, I loved it. It’s a welcome return to narrative adventure, boosted by strong direction, fantastic visuals, brilliant performances (especially del Toro and Cera), and a darker, more experimental edge that suits Anderson surprisingly well. I’m curious how it’ll hold up on rewatches, but for now, it’s an easy 5 out of 5 and a 10 out of 10 from me. Thanks for reading! A murder, estranged sisters, and a whole mess of betrayal. The Better Sister  doesn’t ease you in—it throws you headfirst into the drama with blood on the floor and secrets waiting around every corner. Jessica Biel stars as Chloe, a type-A, career-climbing power player whose pristine image starts to crack when she enters her home. Unaware of what happened after a night of celebrating, she walks into the kitchen, opens the fridge, and has a few grapes as she thinks about the night's events. It takes a moment, but soon she discovers Adam, her husband, lying in a pool of his own blood. From there, it’s a tense unraveling. After a panicked 911 call and Chloe darting out of the apartment, the story jumps 36 hours ahead. Chloe is being honored at an event, her teenage son Ethan is at her side, and Adam—her husband—is conspicuously absent, sparking whispers. That sets the stage for secrets lurking underneath a polished, happy exterior. From here, we get threads of the past stitched into the present. Chloe, a feminist with a progressive agenda, becomes the target of online harassment that’s as vile as it is disturbing—deep fakes, smears, everything you can imagine in the age of information and technology. This angle is part of the larger “Who Killed Adam?” mystery. Is Chloe a grieving wife? Or something more calculating? She appears suspicious when we discover she has two phones and quietly disposes of one. It’s giving secrets. Episode two tilts the mystery on its axis. The police now have a suspect—Ethan. His DNA is found under Adam’s fingernails, and suddenly the grief turns to suspicion. The story throws it's first twist in this episode, enter Nikki, Chloe’s estranged sister, played by Elizabeth Banks. As it turns out, she's Ethan's biological mother and Adam's first  wife. Talk about family drama! Nikki crashing at Chloe’s house after years apart is the real heart of the series. You’ve got Chloe, who seems to have it all together, and Nikki, the messy sister who can’t catch a break. One built a glasshouse, the other has made her mistakes, but overall, you can see that she is misunderstood. She wasn’t her mother's favorite, and she was expected to fail. As the layers peel back, it’s clear both women are carrying trauma—one represses, the other is dealing on her own, without her sister's much-needed support. Their dynamic is where the show really shines. Parts are heartbreaking as Nikky wants Chloe to face their trauma but Chloe doesn't want to face it until she is forced to come to terms with who Adam truly was. She has to grapple with betrayal in a way that forces her to look in the mirror. She betrayed her sister in the worst way. The show touches on it but this is where I would have liked to have seen more. I would have also liked to have seen more of Nikky's life both with and without Adam. Adam and Chloe took Ethan away from Nikky when he was a young child. He grew up referring to Chloe as his mother. There are many flashbacks, some better placed than others, and while they're meant to deepen character backstory, I wish the show had leaned more into the family tension and less into the courtroom drama. The trial becomes the centerpiece for a stretch, which is fine if you're into legal twists, but I kept wanting to get back to the messy sisterhood, the uncomfortable truths, and the killer still out there. Still, the performances carry it. Biel and Banks give raw, grounded portrayals of women shaped by their wounds and choices. You believe them, whether they're fighting, bonding, or breaking. The series leaves you on edge, dropping new motives, new secrets, and just enough doubt to change your opinion of the suspect throughout. Is Ethan the killer? Is Chloe hiding something more? Can Nikki be trusted? All fair questions, and The Better Sister  makes you want to find out. However, in the end, one has to ask, was it predictable? Final verdict: It’s not perfect, but it is  addicting. A few pacing missteps aside, it’s a compelling ride full of suspense and sisterhood with bite. I’d give it a solid 9 out of 10 .
