The streaming giant just dropped details on its highly anticipated reality show, Wonka’s The Golden Ticket, set to premiere on September 23, 2026. On paper, it sounds like a sweet dream: 12 pairs of contestants competing in a massive, real-life recreation of Willy Wonka’s candy wonderland. But behind the chocolate river lies a massive, tech-heavy twist that already has the internet screaming into the void.
Netflix decided that a normal reality TV host simply wouldn’t do. Instead, they partnered with AI audio company ElevenLabs to digitally clone the voice of the late, great Gene Wilder to narrate the game.
While the creators secured the full blessing of Wilder’s estate, with his widow, Karen B. Wilder, sharing her excitement about introducing his magic to a new generation, the internet is already feeling a certain way about it. Replicating a deceased icon’s voice via algorithms for a reality showdown feels less like "pure imagination" and more like a dystopian sci-fi episode. Is it a heartfelt tribute, or is it just spooky? The line is paper-thin. If you can look past the ghostly digital narration, the actual game sounds like a wild ride. Produced by Eureka Productions, the minds behind Netflix’s The Mole revival, the show was filmed on the sunny Gold Coast of Australia.
The setup follows 12 "Golden Ticket" winners who each brought a partner along for the ride. Together, they will face a gauntlet of mental, physical, and psychological tests designed to sniff out greed, selfishness and bad manners. Think of it as Survivor meets a dentist's worst nightmare.
To add to the nostalgia, actor Rusty Goffe, an original Oompa Loompa from the 1971 classic, is making a return to help run the challenges. Netflix is stretching out the suspense for this sweet experiment. The nine-episode season kicks off with the first seven episodes dropping simultaneously on September 23. Fans will then have to wait a week for the two-part finale on September 30 to see which single player walks away with Wonka's mysterious grand prize.
Wonka’s The Golden Ticket is the first major reality swing from Netflix's massive acquisition of the Roald Dahl Story Company. It is loud, it is ambitious, and it is bound to be the most talked-about show of the fall. Whether it tastes like a delicious Everlasting Gobstopper or leaves a bitter aftertaste remains to be seen.
Will you be tuning in for the premiere, or does the AI narration give you the creeps? Drop a comment!
