What to Watch Sunday, September 6: Marble Hall Murders, The Marlow Murder Club & Notre Dame vs. Wisconsin

Sunday is doing something very considerate for television fans: giving us actual choices. PBS turns the night into a full-on murder-mystery event with the Season 3 return of The Marlow Murder Club followed immediately by the premiere of Marble Hall Murders. MGM+ is countering with A Tale of Two Cities, while AMC has the penultimate episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City.

And sports? Friend, Sunday apparently looked at Saturday's college-football marathon and said we're not finished yet. No. 4 Notre Dame meets Wisconsin at Lambeau Field, No. 9 Ole Miss faces No. 24 Louisville in Nashville, NASCAR begins its Chase at Darlington, and NBC closes its MLB Sunday Leadoff season this afternoon.

TV Cave Top Pick: Marble Hall Murders

Give Lesley Manville another murder, because apparently Susan Ryeland has learned absolutely nothing about staying away from suspicious literary situations.

Marble Hall Murders premieres tonight at 9 PM ET on MASTERPIECE on PBS, bringing Manville and Tim McMullan back for the third and final installment of the Susan Ryeland/Atticus Pünd mystery series following Magpie Murders and Moonflower Murders.

This time Susan is hired to help a young writer continue the Atticus Pünd novels, only to discover that the new book may contain clues connected to another death. That means we're once again getting the show's wonderfully complicated mystery-within-a-mystery structure, where fictional detective Pünd investigates one case while Susan tries to figure out what the author's story is secretly telling her about another.

And because Susan apparently cannot edit a manuscript without eventually becoming involved in a homicide investigation, she winds up in danger herself.

PBS is calling this the third and final installment, which gives tonight's premiere some extra weight. After two seasons of murders hidden inside manuscripts, literary clues and people who really should stop putting their secrets into novels, Susan and Pünd have one last case to solve.

The Marlow Murder Club Opens PBS's Murder-Mystery Doubleheader

Before Susan Ryeland starts poking around another suspicious manuscript, Judith, Becks and Suzie are back.

The Marlow Murder Club returns for Season 3 tonight at 8 PM ET on PBS, with Samantha Bond, Jo Martin and Cara Horgan reprising their roles as Marlow's increasingly experienced amateur detectives.

The premiere, “The Queen of Poisons, Part One,” begins when Marlow's mayor suddenly dies during a town council meeting. Everybody in the room becomes a potential suspect, which is precisely the kind of situation Judith and company absolutely cannot leave alone.

Season 3 consists of six episodes running through October 11, meaning PBS has effectively turned Sunday nights back into mystery night. And pairing Marlow Murder Club directly with Marble Hall Murders is smart programming because once you've watched one group of British people politely investigate murder, you might as well stay for another.

Notre Dame and Wisconsin Take Over Lambeau Field

College football gets a rare Sunday primetime showcase when No. 4 Notre Dame faces Wisconsin at 7:30 PM ET on NBC and Peacock.

The Shamrock Series matchup takes place at Lambeau Field, marking Notre Dame's first game at the stadium. The matchup was originally scheduled for 2020 before the pandemic forced it to be postponed, so technically these teams have been trying to get this game played for six years.

Wisconsin and Notre Dame last met at Soldier Field in 2021, when the Irish won 41-13. Tonight also begins Notre Dame's 36th season with NBC Sports.

ABC isn't surrendering the football audience, either. No. 9 Ole Miss faces No. 24 Louisville at 7:30 PM from Nissan Stadium in Nashville in the inaugural Music City Kickoff. The schools have met only once before, with Ole Miss winning 43-24 in 2021.

So yes, two ranked college-football games are airing directly against each other Sunday night.

Apparently Saturday wasn't enough.

Dead City Is One Week Away From the Finale

The Walking Dead: Dead City reaches its penultimate Season 3 episode tonight at 9 PM ET on AMC, with Episode 7 titled “Hourglass.”

After last week's alternate-reality episode brought Emily Kinney back as Beth Greene more than a decade after the character's death on The Walking Dead, the series returns to its actual timeline with Negan facing the consequences of everything that has happened this season.

Only one episode remains after tonight. The eight-episode season concludes Sunday, September 13, so whatever happens in “Hourglass” is setting the board for the finale.

The Librarians Are Almost at the Finish Line Too

TNT's The Librarians: The Next Chapter airs Season 2, Episode 11, “And What Dreams May Come,” tonight at 9 PM ET.

The Librarians find themselves dealing with Merlin again, except this time he's not exactly interested in quietly helping anybody. His attempt to rewrite history threatens both the past and future, forcing the team into what TNT describes as their most dangerous mission yet.

And don't get too comfortable after tonight. Episode 12 follows tomorrow night at 9 PM, continuing TNT's unusual Sunday-Monday rollout and wrapping the season. We need to remember that tomorrow because this show has been sneaking Monday episodes onto the schedule all season.

MGM+ Goes Classic With A Tale of Two Cities

MGM+ enters the Sunday-night drama race at 9 PM ET with a new four-part adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities.

Mirren Mack stars as Lucie Manette, François Civil plays Charles Darnay and Kit Harington takes on Sydney Carton in the latest television adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel.

That puts a prestige period drama directly opposite PBS's murder mysteries, Dead City, The Librarians and two cable finales at 9 PM.

Food Network and History Wrap Their Seasons

Two unscripted shows reach finales in that same crowded hour.

The Great Food Truck Race concludes Season 19 at 9 PM on Food Network, while Henry Winkler closes Season 2 of Hazardous History With Henry Winkler on History. Winkler's finale, “Surviving the '70s,” revisits some of the questionable things people once considered completely normal entertainment, recreation and everyday life.

Between those finales, three scripted premieres, Dead City, The Librarians, Big Brother and two ranked football games, this is easily one of the busiest Sundays we've had in a while.

But we're going with Susan Ryeland. Give that woman a manuscript, and somebody is absolutely getting murdered.
