‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 23 Adds James Wolk as a Surgeon Who’s All About the Bottom Line

James Wolk is officially scrubbing into Grey’s Anatomy, but something tells us his new character may be more interested in the money coming into the hospital than what is happening in the operating room. Wolk has joined the upcoming 23rd season of ABC’s long-running medical drama in a recurring role, and the first details about his character already have us wondering exactly what kind of trouble he is about to bring to Grey Sloan Memorial.

Wolk will play Dr. Seth Norton, a surgeon who traded practicing medicine for the business side of healthcare. Seth owns Olympic Regent Health, a luxury medical center where patients pay out of pocket for elevated care, and Shondaland describes him as a medical professional turned businessman whose primary concern is the bottom line. He is also being positioned as arrogant, which on Grey’s Anatomy is practically an invitation to walk into Grey Sloan and immediately get on somebody’s nerves.

Wolk is currently expected to appear in at least four episodes of Season 23, although exactly how Seth becomes involved with the doctors at Grey Sloan remains under wraps. That mystery might actually be the most interesting part of the casting. A wealthy surgeon-turned-businessman running a competing luxury medical facility feels less like someone dropping by for a difficult surgery and more like someone who could challenge the way Grey Sloan operates, financially, medically or both.

And because this is Grey’s Anatomy, there is always another possibility. Seth is handsome, successful, arrogant and apparently sticking around for several episodes, so are we really supposed to believe nobody at Grey Sloan is going to end up flirting with this man? We have watched this show for more than two decades. We know how this works.

Grey Sloan Is Already Entering a New Era

Wolk's arrival comes during a transitional period for the series following the departures of Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver as Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman. The longtime characters left Grey Sloan together in the Season 22 finale after Teddy received a job opportunity in Paris and Owen decided to join her and their children there.

That leaves some noticeably different dynamics heading into the new season, and introducing someone like Seth could shake things up even further. He doesn't appear to be arriving as a straightforward replacement for either departing character, which is probably a good thing. After so many years and so many doctors walking through those hospital doors, Grey’s Anatomy doesn't need another character simply filling someone else's spot. Give us somebody who can come in, annoy half the hospital and potentially create an entirely new problem.

Wolk should have no trouble handling that assignment. His television résumé includes Mad Men, Watchmen, Zoo, Tell Me a Story and Ordinary Joe, while his recent work includes The Shards and the upcoming The Boys prequel Vought Rising. He has also landed a recurring role in AMC's upcoming NASCAR drama Thunder Road, so Wolk is going to be very busy on television.

For now, Grey’s Anatomy is keeping Seth Norton's actual storyline secret, including which Grey Sloan doctors will find themselves dealing with him. But a doctor who left medicine behind, built a luxury healthcare business and never loses sight of the bottom line feels specifically designed to clash with at least a few people in those halls.
