'Watson' Season 1 Episode 9 "Take a Family History" Recap

A man in a pink suit smiles at another person in red, in a dimly lit room. The mood is warm and conversational.

It's 2009, New Year's Eve. UHOP (University Hospital for Outpatient Patients) is abuzz with activity. A 14-year-old female, Gigi, is brought into the ER by paramedics. Her Father's there updating the ER doctor on what happened. She's unconscious and reportedly has no feelings in her legs.

A few minutes later, her sister, DeeDee/Ingrid Derian, arrives panicking and searching for her sister. The medical assistant is unable to give her any new information.

Fast forward to 2025, Ingrid's grown up and is working for Watson at the Holmes Clinic, UHOP (University Hospital for Outpatient Patients). This episode finally provides Ingrid’s backstory, one of Watson’s mysterious clinic team members. Her attitude is seemingly dark and unfeeling when compared to the other three team members. Now we see why. She and her sister suffered and sustained injuries from an abusive parent.

Ingrid gives Watson a look at her latest pet project that helps paralyzed people walk by creating a digital bridge between the spinal signal and implant in the brain. It literally transports patients’ thoughts over the injured tissue, and converts them into action. Fascinating! This research has miraculous possibilities if it could work. They still have to perform the first surgery. This is the most excited and playful Ingrid's been since the show began. It doesn't last long, when she gets a harrowing call from her sister Gigi. Ingrid rushes home to help her sister. She's experiencing excruciating pain in her arms and fears she may become a quadriplegic. She refuses to go to any other hospital, other than UHOP. Ingrid hesitates, but agrees after Gigi promises not to tell anyone they're related.

They get to the ER, and Ingrid acts like they barely know each other. She tells her sister to use her changed name and not to say anything about the electroconvulsive therapy she's undergoing. Ingrid tells her sister to keep quiet or they’ll lose everything, Gigi will get kicked out of the research program, and Ingrid could lose her job.

At the Team's Office, Sasha is helping Stephens set up his dating profile. She even brought dogs to use in the photos. One is a cute three-legged dog named Tripod. Ingrid snidely teases them. The profile worked, and Stephens is getting a lot of date requests.

In the midst of all that's happening, Mary asks Watson out on a date. They're dinner plans change for the better. They have a heart-to-heart talk about all that’s happened including the loss of their child. Mary shares that she’s finally healing.

Ingrid’s patient, Gigi, becomes a Holmes Clinic Team Project. Mary sits in on the briefing. Flashback to 2010, and Ingrid asks Dr. Mary Morstan (Yes, the Same Mary!) for help with her sister, Gigi.

In the present, Watson sees through Ingrid's roadblocks to suggested treatments for Gigi. He knows she's her sister. He gets her to explain what she did. Ingrid and Mary meet again. They battle over Gigi's past treatment. The truth comes out. A surgery that might have saved Gigi’s legs was never performed.

Watson figures out Gigi’s problem! He rallies the team. They quickly administer the meds and treatment Gigi needs.

The artful use of the flashbacks unravel and reveal a story that was hidden for years by both Mary and Ingrid. Mary had no idea who Ingrid was until now. She doesn't pull Gigi from the experimental research program, but does give Ingrid an ultimatum to leave or get fired. Watson doesn't advocate for her. The last flashback shows why that was a very good idea. She murdered her Father.

One happy moment in tonight's episode is Tripod getting a new owner, Stephens. A picture with her in his dating profile improved his dating prospects. He also developed a soft spot in his heart for her.

This episode was a dark one, but now shows what Ingrid is capable of doing. Everyone should be very afraid, especially since Moriarty's already contacted her for a future team-up.
