'Watson' Season 1 Episode 13 "Your Life's Work, Part 2" Recap

Two people stand in a medical setting; a woman in a red suit and a man in a gray coat. They look serious. Shelves and equipment in the background.

What an ending for the season! This episode had surprises, lives saved, a new character, the loss of a memorable character, an unexpected death, subterfuge, secrets revealed, a double cross, and the lengths Watson will go to save the world. This episode was done well!

This final season episode begins with Watson, Mary, Sasha and Ingrid standing outside the comatose Stephens and Adam’s isolation room. They argue over who to save with the one dose of the cure. Watson takes them back to his office and they decide the Croft twins fate with Sherlock’s coin. He tosses it to determine which Croft twin to save. Moriarty already selected Adam with the genetically engineered virus. The twins have the same DNA. Who will they save?

They rush to perform the necessary surgery and Adam is saved. He wakes later, and they tell him Stephens is still in a coma. Adam is confused and angry. Stephens has two days to live. Watson calls Sidwell, but he doesn’t answer. He leaves him a dire message, telling him they and Stephens need him. Shinwell enters the clinic. He doesn’t look well. They stand outside Stephens’ isolation room. He says he may be able to help.

He drives to the usual meeting place where he used to meet with Moriarty’s Agent, Hannah Burke. She doesn’t look well, and lacks sleep. She asks what he wants. He delivers a message that Watson may be able to help her daughter, Ashleigh.Shinwell returns to the Holmes Clinic with Hannah and Ashleigh. Watson and Mary meet them at the entrance. Watson recognizes her as the pharmaceutical representative that used to visit. She acknowledges that fact. Watson ignores her, and welcomes Ashleigh.

She smiles at him. Hannah asks what he wants, and says she doesn’t traffic in false hope. Mary talks to Ashleigh, and tells her about their robot,Clyde. She takes her to see it, while Watson discusses things with her mother.Ashleigh and Mary give Clyde tasks to perform in the lab. Ashleigh is fascinated with what it can do. In the team’s office, Sasha and Ingrid work with Watson to find out how to treat Ashleigh’s medulloblastoma SHH. She had a brain tumor by her 9th birthday. It’s located at the base of her cerebellum. Shinwell and Hannah watch from the hallway. Hannah asks again what they want from her, and Shinwell tells her. They need an exchange of information to help save Stephens Croft.

He isn’t the person targeted by Moriarty. A new vector is needed to deliver the cure. She tells him it’s a suicide mission to cross Moriarty.Watson, Ingrid and Sasha brainstorm to determine the best way to remove Ashleigh Burke’s brain tumor. Watson states the problem is her weight. The chemo she needs is weight-based. She needs to gain 15 more pounds for it to be effective, and they save her life. No one can figure out why Ashleigh can’t gain weight. He tells Ingrid she needs to be all-in on this, in order to save Stephens. He needs everyone’s help to determine how to begin Ashleigh’s treatment.A person wanders into the clinic looking for Watson. It’s Laila Bynum, Ashleigh Burke’s oncologist. He tells her what the clinic does. She is skeptical about what he tells her, and the possible hope he gives Ashleigh.Later, Ingrid is with her sister, Gigi, in the gym. She’s  helping her prepare for her spinal surgery, when Moriarty appears. Ingrid asks what he wants there. He asked her how it felt when she contaminated the vectors.

Three women with ID badges listen intently to a man in a suit, in a cozy study with bookshelves. Tense atmosphere.

She said it felt inevitable. He gives her a way to contact him, and tells her now they are a collaboration. Sasha sits and talks to Stephens at his bedside. She hopes he comes back, and that he remembers the kiss she gives him. Stephens’ and Ashleigh’s  monitor alarms go off simultaneously. Sasha directs the nurse on what to do for Stephens while. Dr. Bynum and Watson help Ashleigh. Ashleigh had a seizure. They ask Hannah what could be preventing Ashleigh from gaining weight. Sasha tells her what they are doing to Stephens to keep him alive.

They also emphasize what is needed. Sasha puts it bluntly, and threatens to kill her. Watson, Sasha, Ingrid, Mary, Hannah sit in the conference room and try to figure out where Moriarty’s lab is, since he has extensive properties. Watson says it has to be nearby in Pittsburgh (Moriarty keeps popping in at any time). Sasha asks what Moriarty is planning to do with all the DNA they collected. Hannah gives them a scenario that will play out. She says he won’t kill a multitude of people, just the right people. She suggests a place where the lab could be, and Watson sends her and Shinwell to check it out. Ingrid warns Watson that Moriarty would surely have protection for his lab. Watson understands. Watson calls Shinwell to an examining room. He’s not doing well. Shinwell removes his shirt and Watson sees bloody welts on his back. Shinwell says he doesn’t have time for himself. He wants to ensure the Croft boys are well.

Later, Watson updates everyone on Ashleigh’s condition. She had a grand mal seizure. It’s not related to her tumor. They do blood cultures to find out how to get Ashleigh to gain weight. Dr. Bynum fits well into the team dynamics, and might be interested in Watson. Hannah and Shinwell talk outside the possible lab area. They are friendlier towards each other. He tells her if Ashleigh can be saved, Watson will do it. He assures Hannah she did right by her daughter, despite what else she did. They wait until morning’s shift changes. The next morning, Ingrid goes to meet Moriarty at the Iron City Incline Landmark. Ingrid contacted him. She tells him she’s ready to be her real self. She tells him about what’s happening in the clinic. She says he took too long to kill Shinwell and that they know about the lab. Moriarty tells her they are alike, and asks how far she will go to get what she wants. Adam watches over his brother in the isolation room, while Mary, Sasha, Dr Bynum and Watson review Ashleigh’s culture results.

They find nothing. Ingrid arrives late. They ask Bynum about Ashleigh's care at her oncology clinic. She says they had contract workers, but can’t be sure if they were monitoring all her seizures. Suddenly, Watson has a thought which could be a key to Ashleigh’s weight gain problem. He believes Ashleigh has a genetic condition MCAD. Sasha says it’s medium chain acyl coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency. The protein shakes they gave her had contents her body couldn’t process. She had seizures at night when her body tried to burn up all the body’s fuel. The temp nurses failed to detect this. Watson says she needs corn starch protein shakes. Watson and Ingrid face-off. Both say nothing.

In the car outside the lab, Shinwell and Hannah prepare to enter the lab. Hannah tells him her real name is Hannah. She tells him to make sure Ashleigh lives. Security drives up to the lab. They don’t know who told Moriarty. Watson calls just in time, and orders Shinwell back to the clinic. They get back and Watson tells Hannah Ashleigh is doing fine. Sasha tells to say thank you, and get out. She does just that. Ingrid confesses to everyone about Moriarty, and why he came for her. She also reveals she ruined the vector. Sasha is furious, Shinwell is stunned. She says she’s sorry if Stephens has brain damage now. Watson fills them in on his conversation with Ingrid, and who she really wants to be.

Moriarty’s on his way there. Ingrid’s not done, yet with the biggest reveal. She got Moriarty’s DNA from a cuticle he didn’t know he gave her. She arrived at the early meeting before Moriarty and covered everything in the cars to the incline with a genome solution Watson created. Moriarty’s coming because he’s sick, and he knows why and who can cure him.

A patient in a hospital bed talks to a seated man. The room is dimly lit, with medical equipment nearby. The mood appears serious.

Moriarty arrives and asks what Watson did to him. He can’t see. Watson examines Moriarty, and tells him what he did to him. He tells him he’ll die. He toys with him. Watson knows Moriarty brought the cure. Moriarty says he won’t let them anesthetize him, he thinks he won’t wake up.. Watson tells him he’s not in a position to negotiate. He tells him he’ll only need a local anesthetic. Watson asks him “James Moriarty do you want to die today?” Watson comes out and asks the team what they want, cure him or not?

They all vote to cure him and get the cure for Stephens. They book the OR for Stephens, and Watson applies the antidote to Moriarty’s eyes. Stephens wakes, and Adam tells his brother he doesn’t have brain damage. Adam apologizes about dating Lauren, and Stephens forgives him. Sasha interrupts them, and Adam leaves them alone. She tells Stephens about the kiss, and she’s afraid it almost killed him. Luckily he can’t remember and needs a refresher. Ashleigh recovers, and happily plays with her mom and Dr. Bynum in her hospital room.

Sasha tells Ingrid what she thinks of her in their office. She tells her he has to see Stephens. Watson applies medicine to heal Shinwell’s wounds. Ingrid goes to see him, and he thanks her for what she did. He says he can’t work with her anymore, and asks her to go. She leaves. Watson checks on Moriarty and he can now see. Watson reviews all Moriarty has done, and asks him why he’s doing this. He reveals that the cure didn’t work well. He says he treated his eyesight problem, but he will die soon. He asks Moriarty who he is. Moriarty smirks and dies with his secrets! Watson leaves the room, and tells Mary Moriarty is gone. Can't believe Watson killed him. Mary tells him she likes Laila Bynum. Laila and Watson start dating later.

One night, Watson shoves Moriarty’s shirt in a box under his bed. Wouldn’t want anything from that monster, but Watson is Watson.

That’s it for Season 1! Season 2 begins in the fall. Who’s going to be Watson’s next antagonist? Did Moriarty really kill Sherlock? What will happen to Ingrid and her sister, Gia? Will Sasha and Stephens’ love bloom? How will Watson secure the DNA Library and prevent others from weaponizing DNA? Was Moriarty working alone? Did they get all the bioweapons? Will someone come to avenge his death? All questions that may be answered when Watson returns in Season 2. This show improved tremendously, and has become a true mystery drama with a lot of interesting medical intrigue. It’s becoming an entertaining comfort show. Wonder what they have in store next season.

Thank You Team Watson and that means everyone who brought this show to life!
