Waiting for Lanterns Season 2? Here's What Needs to Happen First

Two men walk down a deserted rural road at sunset, wearing dark jackets, with dry hills and power lines behind them.

Lanterns delivered a successful first season, gave DC fans plenty to talk about, and left the door open for more adventures with John Stewart. So, naturally, a second season should be right around the corner, right? Well, not so fast. Despite the HBO series earning praise and drawing a sizable audience, DC Studios isn't ready to promise another season just yet.

The good news is that Season 2 remains a possibility. The catch? DC Studios wants a story that's actually worth telling before giving the series another green light.

What Will It Take for Lanterns to Get Season 2?

DC Studios co-chairman and co-CEO Peter Safran recently addressed the show's future in an interview with Collider, making it clear that another season depends on the creative direction rather than simply repeating the first season's success.

“If we're able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that's what's going to dictate whether there's a second season,” Safran explained.

That's a pretty high bar, especially considering how much Lanterns accomplished in its eight-episode debut. But it's also a refreshing approach in an industry where successful shows can sometimes get another season before anyone figures out what happens next.

While a writers' room has been exploring potential ideas, HBO has not officially renewed the series. That means the creative team still needs to develop a convincing direction for the next chapter before fans can start celebrating.

When Will Fans Know If Lanterns Is Returning?

Fortunately, DC Studios doesn't intend to leave fans guessing forever. Safran indicated that an answer about the show's future should come before the end of 2026, although no specific announcement date has been confirmed.

The first season starred Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, bringing a grounded mystery to the Green Lantern mythology. Its success also helped put the franchise back into the spotlight after years of mixed fortunes on the big screen. And with John Stewart's journey continuing in the larger DC Universe, there's certainly room for more storytelling. Whether that happens through another season of Lanterns, future DC projects, or both remains to be seen.

For now, fans are stuck playing the waiting game. The audience has shown up, the characters have made an impression, and the creative team is considering what comes next. All that's missing is a story that convinces DC Studios that another season can live up to the first.

Hopefully, we won't have to wait too much longer to find out whether Lanterns will shine again.
