Trying Season 5 Trailer Teases Big Feelings for Apple TV’s Most Underrated Comedy

A group of eight people crowd a stairwell, staring upward with worried faces near a large window and green lawn outside.

The Trying Season 5 trailer has arrived, and somehow this show continues to make us emotional over people simply trying to live their lives.

Apple TV unveiled the first look at the upcoming fifth season of Trying, and if the trailer is any indication, Nikki and Jason's next chapter is about to get a lot more complicated. Just when the couple finally seemed to have found some stability, life shows up with other plans. As it tends to do.

Season 5 finds Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) dealing with the arrival of Kat (Charlotte Riley), the biological mother of Princess and Tyler. Her unexpected return immediately changes the family dynamic and threatens the comfortable routine Nikki and Jason have worked so hard to build.

The trailer wastes no time letting viewers know that nobody is getting an easy season. One of the reasons Trying has remained such a standout series is because it never treats its characters like plot devices. Every challenge feels earned. Every emotional beat lands. Even when the show is making you laugh, it's usually setting you up to catch feelings five minutes later. Rude, but effective.

The footage hints at difficult conversations, shifting relationships, and questions about what family really means. Thankfully, it also looks like the series hasn't lost its trademark warmth and humor. Because while we're ready for the drama, we're not trying to spend eight episodes ugly crying every Wednesday.

The real secret weapon continues to be the chemistry between Smith and Spall. Five seasons in, Nikki and Jason still feel like one of television's most believable couples. Their relationship has always grounded the series, and the trailer suggests that foundation will be tested again in ways that feel authentic rather than manufactured.

The supporting cast remains one of the strongest on television, with Darren Boyd, Siân Brooke, Celia Imrie, Phil Davis, Gbemisola Ikumelo, and Colin Morgan all returning. The show has always excelled at making every character feel important, creating a world that feels lived-in and refreshingly real.

Meanwhile, the music remains a major part of the Trying experience. This season features original songs from Irish singer-songwriter Orla Gartland, whose track "At The End Of The Day" is featured prominently in the trailer. Based on what we've heard so far, Apple TV may have another soundtrack obsession on its hands.

What stands out most about the Trying Season 5 trailer is its confidence. The show knows exactly what it is at this point. It doesn't need shocking twists or outrageous storylines to keep viewers invested. It simply continues telling meaningful stories about love, family, parenting, and the occasional emotional gut punch that sneaks up on you when you're least prepared.

Since premiering in 2020, Trying has quietly become one of the best comedies on television, earning praise for its heart, humor, and refreshingly human storytelling. Season 5 looks ready to continue that streak while introducing a new layer of tension that could change everything for Nikki, Jason, Princess, and Tyler.

The first episode premieres July 8 on Apple TV, with new episodes dropping weekly through August 26.

And if this trailer is any indication, we should probably start preparing ourselves emotionally now.
