There are bad ideas, and then there are Phyllis Summers ideas. On the September 3 episode of The Young and the Restless, Phyllis came up with a plan involving Sharon and Matt Clark that sounds like exactly the kind of scheme destined to blow up spectacularly in everyone's faces.
Phyllis has managed to locate Matt, but she's keeping that information to herself. Instead of simply telling everyone where he is, she has decided Matt needs an opportunity to prove that he's changed. Apparently, Phyllis' solution is to manufacture a crisis involving Sharon and give Matt the opportunity to swoop in and save her.
Yes, you read that correctly. Phyllis wants to deliberately put Sharon in a frightening or potentially dangerous situation so Matt can play hero. Matt wasn't exactly jumping at the opportunity when Phyllis presented the idea, but that didn't stop her from trying to sell him on it. In Phyllis' mind, Sharon seeing Matt come to her rescue could help change the way everyone views him and prove that he isn't the same man they remember. Considering Matt's complicated and disturbing history with Sharon, however, using her as an unwilling participant in his redemption story is one heck of a gamble.
Making matters even more suspicious, Phyllis continues to lie about knowing Matt's whereabouts. When Adam questioned whether she'd found him, she denied it and even floated the idea that her interest in Matt might be romantic. Adam later shared his suspicions with Nick, believing Phyllis could actually be developing feelings for Matt.
Whether Phyllis genuinely has feelings for him or is simply getting pulled deeper into one of her own schemes remains to be seen. Either way, Sharon is completely unaware that she's potentially being turned into a pawn in a plan designed to rehabilitate Matt's image.
That's what makes this considerably more serious than one of Phyllis' usual attempts at manipulation. She isn't trying to steal a company, sabotage a rival or get the upper hand in a business deal. She's discussing creating a situation involving Sharon's safety without Sharon having any say in the matter.
And there are about a thousand ways this could go wrong. What happens if Matt can't control the situation? What happens if someone actually gets hurt? And perhaps most importantly, what happens when Sharon discovers Phyllis intentionally used her to help Matt look like a changed man?
Phyllis has talked her way out of plenty of questionable decisions over the years, but this might be one scheme Genoa City won't be willing to overlook.
