If you’ve been wandering through the desert of mid-season repeats, parched for a reason to keep your streaming subscriptions active, the casting gods have finally seen fit to provide. This week’s news cycle is hitting like a triple-shot espresso, delivering big names to projects that actually sound, dare we say it, interesting. From Kevin Bacon returning to the grit of the South to Nestor Carbonell trading his Shōgun robes for a tracksuit in Kingstown, the latest casting news proves that the industry is still obsessed with trauma, crime, and middle-aged men looking intense in the woods.
Kevin Bacon Goes Full 'Southern Bastards' at Hulu
First up, Kevin Bacon is heading to Craw County, Alabama, to star in the Hulu drama pilot "Southern Bastards." Based on the acclaimed graphic novel, Bacon will play Earl, a man who clearly didn't get the memo that "quiet retirement" is a thing. When his Army veteran daughter tracks him down, she finds a town held hostage by a high school football coach who doubles as a crime lord.
It’s the kind of role Bacon eats for breakfast. We’ve seen him do the "haunted lawman" bit before, but Earl offers a chance for some genuine, fried-okra-scented grit. If Hulu doesn't mess up the adaptation, this could be the sweaty, violent noir we’ve been waiting for since Justified packed its bags.
Nestor Carbonell Joins the 'Mayor of Kingstown' Finale
Over at Paramount+, "Mayor of Kingstown" is beefing up its fifth and final season by adding Nestor Carbonell. Fresh off an Emmy win, Carbonell is playing Enrique Molina, a boss looking to avenge a missing relative.
Kingstown is already a place where everyone looks like they haven't slept since 2019, so Carbonell’s effortless intensity will fit right in. Watching him go toe-to-toe with Jeremy Renner’s Mike McLusky should provide the fireworks needed to close out the series. It’s a smart move for a show that thrives on characters who communicate exclusively through threats and gravelly whispers.
Kerry Condon Gets Lost in 'The God of the Woods'
Finally, Netflix has snagged Oscar nominee Kerry Condon for "The God of the Woods." Joining Maya Hawke in this adaptation of the Liz Moore bestseller, Condon plays Alice, a mother whose 13-year-old daughter vanishes in the Adirondacks.
Condon is consistently the best thing in everything she touches, and playing a woman forced to confront "the unimaginable" suggests we should all stock up on tissues and antidepressants before the premiere. It’s a multi-generational drama, which is Netflix-speak for "you’re going to need a flowchart to keep track of who lied to whom in 1975."
The Cave’s Verdict
Between Bacon’s southern fried justice, Carbonell’s vengeful boss, and Condon’s mountain-side mystery, the upcoming TV slate is looking surprisingly robust. We’re moving away from mindless reboots and toward stories that actually have some teeth.

How do you feel about the Southern Bastards adaptation, can a TV show truly capture the grit of the original comics?
