ABC is making Wednesday nights a whole lot more interesting in 2027, and The Rookie fans are getting a double dose of police drama. During Sunday's New York Comic Con panel, the network confirmed that The Rookie Season 9 and its new spinoff, The Rookie: North, will both premiere January 6, 2027. But the premiere dates were only part of the excitement, because familiar faces are crossing over, new characters are joining the action, and John Nolan apparently isn't finished playing mentor just yet.

The original series is moving to Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET, followed by The Rookie: North at 10 p.m. ET. That means ABC is giving the franchise its own two-hour block, and considering how popular the original series has become, it's a move that makes plenty of sense.

The Rookie Season 9 Is Bringing in Some Familiar Faces

Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario is joining Season 9 as Stevie, a single mother who becomes a rookie police officer under John Nolan's supervision. Yes, Nolan has officially reached the point in his career where he's helping guide the next generation, and we can only imagine how many of his own early mistakes he hopes his new trainee manages to avoid.

Bellisario previously directed an episode of The Rookie, making her upcoming appearance something of a homecoming. This time, however, she'll be stepping in front of the camera as a character who is beginning her own journey with the LAPD.

Dulé Hill is also joining the cast as a new watch commander, while Molly Kunz will appear as an EMT. Details about their storylines remain limited, but adding new characters to a show with an already crowded precinct should create some interesting dynamics.

The Rookie: North Is Keeping Things in the Family

Meanwhile, the upcoming spinoff isn't wasting any time establishing its connection to the original series. Nathan Fillion, Melissa O'Neil, and Eric Winter are confirmed to appear in The Rookie: North, bringing John Nolan, Lucy Chen, and Tim Bradford into the new show's world.

The NYCC presentation even included footage of Nolan speaking with the spinoff's lead character, Alex Holland, played by Jay Ellis, over FaceTime. Leave it to Nolan to find a way to mentor another rookie, even when that rookie is working hundreds of miles away.

The Rookie: North follows Alex, a man who decides to pursue a career in law enforcement after a violent home invasion forces him to reconsider the direction of his life. He joins the Pierce County Police Department in Washington, where policing can mean navigating everything from busy communities to remote areas where backup isn't exactly around the corner.

And unlike Nolan, Alex isn't starting his new career in Los Angeles. He's entering an environment where the terrain, the communities, and the challenges of the job offer a different kind of learning curve. Andy Allo is also set to guest star during the spinoff's freshman season.

What About That Season 8 Cliffhanger?

Of course, before everyone starts celebrating new beginnings, The Rookie has some unfinished business. The Season 8 finale left Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen in serious danger after they were kidnapped, and the first footage from Season 9 offers a glimpse of the effort to bring them home.

For Chenford fans, that's probably the first order of business. New rookies and guest stars are exciting, but there's a rather significant rescue mission that needs to happen before anyone can get too comfortable. The upcoming season will also begin with a two-part premiere story, giving the series room to address the fallout from its previous finale while preparing for the next chapter.

ABC Is Betting Big on The Rookie Universe

The franchise expansion marks an important moment for The Rookie, which began as the story of one middle-aged man making an unlikely career change. Now, nine seasons later, Nolan's journey has helped launch another series built around the idea that starting over doesn't come with an expiration date.

With the original show's cast appearing in The Rookie: North, ABC has an opportunity to introduce the new characters without making the spinoff feel completely disconnected from the world audiences already love. Of course, the real test will be whether Alex Holland and his fellow officers can hold viewers' attention once the familiar faces head back to Los Angeles.

The Rookie Season 9 premieres Wednesday, January 6, 2027, at 9 p.m. ET on ABC, followed by the series premiere of The Rookie: North at 10 p.m. ET.
