Beyond the Gates Weekly Recap: Vernon Threatens Hayley, Andre Confronts Dani

This week on Beyond The Gates, Hayley comes face to face with a hacksaw Dexter style while Randy sees the other side of a gun. Andre has had it up to here with Dani and Bill. Eva goes on a medical conference and Izaiah defends his friendship with Kat. Let’s discuss.
Homecoming
Tyrell brings a surprising face home to the homecoming party. It is Chessie, who is now his girlfriend. Jessica who? Tyrell moved on at the speed of light. One has to wonder if it is to spite Jessica, which wouldn’t be fair to Chessie, BUT I am here for it. Despite my dislike of the character, I am interested in the Belclaires. I would love to see Mont and Leslie date. The Belclaires can be the rival family to the Duprees. Every soap has one and if it cannot be Dante Greene, let it be the Belclaires. Anyway, Sam doesn’t take this news too well. Considering all of the bullying Chessie did, can we really blame her? I don’t but this is the messy drama of soaps. More please.
Izaiah and Kat yuck it up so much that they draw the attention of a few people who wonder if the young friends are getting too close. Chelsea wonders if Kat is trying to get back at Eva for sleeping with Tomas. Izaiah and Kat have chemistry, but no one wants to see sisters swapping lovers; it is gross and insulting to Kat’s intelligence. I would include Eva in that but she all too gratefully accepted the crumbs Tomas threw her way.
The Duprees load on the party bus to head over to Banneker’s game; we don’t see it, and it would have been lovely to see a marching band, but we get it, budget. However, with all of the HBCUs out there, I am sure that one would have gladly lent their band for the cause. The showrunners completely miss the age of social media marketing and all of the things they can leverage in exchange for exposure. Like new wigs…
Andre Has Had It!
Andre finally speaks up about Dani prioritizing Bill. He tells her that Bill is no longer sick and even if he was, he has GROWN daughters and friends. He asks her straight up if she still wants to be married to him or if she wants to be with Bill instead. Dani tells him that she doesn’t. Andre says Bill wasn’t available before, but he is now. Bill regrets losing her. Dani wants to fix it.
Andre tells her that Dani is covering for him. He tells her that he never bought into Bill dropping the charges for his reputation. That Hayley has something on him. Dani says it is not her secret to tell. Dani tells Andre that Bill never loved her the way he does. Andre is glad that she knows that.
Andre says there is more to what Dani is saying, and ever since the tornado, things shifted. She apologizes for taking him for granted. He says he doesn’t want apologies. He wants to know why she keeps going to Bill. He has a theory, and that is that his pushing her to take preventative measures against the BRCA gene. That with Bill she gets to be fun and doesn’t have to think of those things. Dani assures him that is not it and she is happy. That Bill knows that she is happy. Andre quickly folds, and Dani uses sex once again to soothe things over.
Dark Vernon and Consequences
Last week, we saw someone grab Hayley. This week we see that it was Marcel. Taking a page out of Dexter’s handbook, he takes her to a room lined in plastic. A hacksaw lies nearby, and Hayley tries to scream and fight, to no avail.
Vernon tells Joey not to kill her and to let him handle it. He goes to see Hayley and threatens her. I am loving this side of Vernon, by the way. We need lots more of it. Vernon puts the pressure on and reminds Hayley that if she blows up their life, she blows up her own. Her victims will learn of her identity and location. He squeezes her for information, and she throws Randy under the bus without hesitation. She tells Vernon that Randy sets up the marks.
Vernon takes this information back to Joey, who then spares Randy; thanks to Vernon, they do not need bloodshed that would cause them to be under a microscope. However, Randy will spend his days making it up to Joey, or he will end up like Doug, confirmation that I thought Randy already had about Joey being the one who killed Doug.
Meanwhile, once Hayley is freed from her restraints, she goes to drink and runs into Leslie, who tries to pump her for information unsuccessfully.
Other Happenings
This didn’t get a feature because it came out of nowhere, was boring, and had no real build-up; Ted took Shanice to NYC and proposed. Umm what? They didn’t even kiss to seal the deal. They have no chemistry, and at this point, they need to put him back with Nicole.
Noah, Dani, and Nicole talk Deanna down, which leads her to tell Ghost Doug that some things were his fault. She turns her ire on him. I see you writers, and I am not buying it. She makes amends with Vanessa again and for once, is honest that she will never accept Joey. Jacob confronts Izaiah about Kat. Chelsea confronts Kat about Izaiah which leads to the two commiserating at The Uptown. Eva is going to a medical conference in Ted’s place with no experience…I just can’t be bothered.
Final Thoughts on the Week
This week was solid. Still a lot of exposition, but at least we did get some action and story movement.
