Two police officers, one speaking, face a man in casual clothes indoors. The mood is serious. Officers wear body cameras and dark uniforms.

Last night’s episode of The Rookie was frustrating to watch, but not in a bad way. It was one of those episodes where you hoped the good guys caught a break and won, but shockingly, the obvious direction wasn’t made and I must admit, I’m not mad at it.

The Glasser Case is Falling Apart

Given what happened in last week’s episode, I knew the DA’s office would have no choice but to offer Liam some sort of deal. What I wasn’t expecting was the return of Harrison Novak, the convicted serial killer that set this entire Liam Glasser case off. When he requested to speak to the detectives about his case, he claims that he wasn’t honest; the bodies he claimed were not his doing suddenly…were. What? Surely Harrison was bluffing and this was some sort of ploy to get Liam Glasser off, but what threw the detectives off was just how much Harrison knew about the other victims– details that were never released to the public. They even threw in a random photo in the line up, and Harrison was able to point out that he wasn’t one of his victims. What the hell was happening?

Stunned, both Angela and Nyla couldn't understand how Harrison knew these details and thinks that he had to have been coached. But by who? I always thought Liam’s attorney was suspicious and it makes sense that he would be the one to leak the information to Harrison, but can this be proven? No. Another person who could’ve been the leak is Vivian, who has been visiting Harrison. He’s representing himself so, it’s possible Vivian let some information about the other victims slip. What I don’t get is why Harrison is confessing now. With Harrison’s confession, Wesley has a challenge ahead of him in convicting Liam.

Harrison’s plan must’ve been getting Liam Glasser out of prison and I hate to say this but…it worked. The DA’s office had no choice but to drop the case against Liam which means he is a free man. What does all of this mean? What was the reason behind this? Wesley was so defeated when he learned that Liam was being released. I wanted this win for him despite everything working against him and it didn’t happen. But man am I looking forward to seeing how this all unfolds.

Lucy Returns to Work

It was sweet of Tim to encourage Lucy to take more time off, but I like that she got right back to it. What she experienced was a cop’s worst nightmare, but the best way to push through it would be to get back on the routine. When Tim had Smitty cover him to ride with Lucy, admittedly, I felt like he was doing too much. Granted, he did say that he would’ve done this for any of his officers, which could be true, but Lucy isn’t just one of his other officers. Tim could say it all he wants, but a part of him needed to be out there with Lucy so that he could see for himself that she was okay.

When the first case she attaches herself to involved a deceased motel guest, Tim tried to convince her that she didn’t have to take this call and they could start off slow. Lucy insisted on taking this call because let’s be honest here, this is part of the job and she can’t avoid it forever. My thoughts while Tim was riding with her kept going back to “she needs this in order to move forward; Tim you need to let her”.

Going back to the station, Lucy is approached by Joan Capiro, Martin’s sister. She’s pressing Lucy on why she killed her brother and how she could do something to someone who was kind. Tim cuts this interaction short, excusing Lucy and handling Joan. He then tells Lucy she should go home. Lucy insists on finishing out her shift and tells Tim that she “doesn’t need boyfriend Tim” right now and he retorts saying it isn’t boyfriend Tim telling her to go home, and then says if she wants to stay on shift, she can but she can’t go out on patrol. I wanted to scream at Tim, but as her boyfriend and as her colleague, he wanted to keep her safe. I had to remind myself that had the outcome been different, Tim would’ve been the one dealing with the aftermath of losing Lucy and he’s glad she did what she had to do. So, I’m choosing to be patient with Tim right now.

What Lucy needed, and I’m glad Tim allowed for it, was to speak to Martin’s sister. With the investigation, it would be over a year of not knowing what happened that day and Lucy felt like she needed to know the truth. Watching Lucy breakdown as she explained to Joan every moment leading up to her decision to do what she had to do, you can see that she is in fact not okay and is very much working through it still, but the strength it took to have this conversation was so powerful. To allow Joan to have that closure while she was still trying to forgive herself was a selfless act and I commend Lucy for this. Joan was, thankfully, understanding as Lucy explained her brother was far gone from the memory she had of him. I hope after this conversation Lucy begins to forgive herself and allow herself to move forward.

Bailey is in Trouble

Well, it looks like the weird AI stalker, Zuzu, is back, but this time his obsession with John was helpful. After helping Wade with intel needed within the pentagon, Bailey now has eyes on her. Zuzu called John to warn him that Bailey is being carefully watched and she’s in danger.

John goes to Wade (disrespectfully) and asks what’s going on with Bailey and what did he ask her to do that put her life in danger? I was a bit thrown off at this, because with the task force, John shouldn’t be allowed to just ask questions like that right? Isn’t it a “need to know” thing? Either way, Wade explained the reason behind him enlisting Bailey’s help and how they can ensure she’s brought back safe.

Knowing that her phone is tapped, Bailey sets a trap saying she has information regarding Everett, someone they believe to have ties with someone in the pentagon, and is getting on a red eye to share. Now we just wait to see who follows.

Normally I’m not interested in anything Bailey is involved in (sorry not sorry) but this storyline has my attention.
