‘The Rainmaker’ Season 2 Trailer Teases a Dangerous New Case for Rudy Baylor

The courtroom is about to be back in session.

USA Network has released the trailer for The Rainmaker Season 2, giving fans their best look yet at what awaits Rudy Baylor and his unconventional legal team when the John Grisham-inspired drama returns this fall. After spending its first season building Rudy’s world around one major case, the series is going bigger for its sophomore outing with new clients, new adversaries and a story that could put hundreds of children in danger.

Milo Callaghan returns as Rudy, alongside Lana Parrilla as Jocelyn “Bruiser” Stone and P.J. Byrne as Deck Shifflet. The trio survived more than their share of legal and personal battles during the first season, but Season 2 won't simply give them another version of the case they already fought.

The official Season 2 description says Rudy, Deck and Bruiser will face both old and new adversaries in a case involving the lives of hundreds of children, with winning potentially proving just as dangerous as losing. Showrunner Michael Seitzman has also revealed that Season 2 will expand the show's format by tackling more than one case, with those seemingly separate stories ultimately affecting one another.

That should immediately give the second season a different feel. Season 1 was largely built around the central story established in Grisham's novel, while the new episodes give the television adaptation more room to establish an identity of its own. Seitzman has previously teased children in danger as well as a larger storyline involving gambling and the Dixie Mafia, suggesting Rudy's latest legal battles could reach well beyond the courtroom.

Season 2 is also bringing several new faces into the mix. Merle Dandridge joins the cast as attorney Amanda Vonn, while Austin Nichols will recur as Tom Cassidy, Bruiser's ex-husband and a former baseball player who now works as a minor league coach. Cassidy becomes caught up in a dangerous conspiracy, giving Bruiser a much more personal connection to at least part of the season's story.

Richard Kind and Liam O'Halloran are also among the newcomers joining the expanding ensemble. Meanwhile, the arrival of Amanda Vonn could complicate matters for Rudy in another way, as the character has been described as a powerful new adversary who provides Sarah Plankmore with a new path into the upper levels of the legal world.

The Rainmaker became a significant scripted success for USA Network during its first season. According to the network, the first nine premiere episodes averaged 1.3 million total viewers, while the series became USA's most-watched freshman show in seven years across platforms.

Now Rudy Baylor has another case or, apparently, several of them.

The Rainmaker Season 2 premieres this fall on USA Network.
